Last night, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis got the chance to perform their Dave Niehaus tribute in front of 45k at the Seattle Mariner’s home opener. Dope.

somehow i missed this when the video came out back in Jan. Glad I didn’t miss it this time around. I’m coming from the same place as these guys! Didn’t realize they were NW locals. Dave Niehaus was a bigger loss to the Mariners than A-Rod and Tim Lincecum combined. Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but Niehaus was BY FAR the best radio announcer I have ever heard and I have listened to probably half the M’s games in the past 16 years. Dave was top notch all the way to the end. I had a hard time even turning on the radio at first this season, fearing that th OTHER Dave in the M’s booth (Sims) who’s one of the worst baseball announcers I’ve ever heard, would be replacing Niehaus as it seemed he was being groomed to do. To my relief, Rick Rizzs and Ron Fairly (Dave Niehaus’ sidekicks for 20 years or so) handled the bulk of the duty.
Two things I love are hip-hop and hardball and it’s not often that a well-done combinaion of the two ever gets turned out, much less one in honor of my favorite announcer of all time. No other sports announcer’s words have brought tears to my eyes. He was the heart of the Mariners loyal fan base and his heart, like ours, took a toll from a combination of awesome cuisine and the agony of watching a losing team full of 75% winning players over and over.
The first radio announcer ever worthy of (and recipient of) induction into the Hall Of Fame.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, I owe you both big time. Big big props on this. If you put it out on cd or vinyl, it’ll be possibly my most prized possession, right up there with the George Carlin autographed Playboy and the autographed OG release of Anghellic and my Masta Ace Hits U Missed collection and that ultra-rare signed KRS-One promo
