Jay Electronica – Prelude To A Freestyle (Video)

Jay takes my favorite backdrop from Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and spits hot fire over it. Props to FWMJ, who also provided the lyrics down bottom.

  1. Are we actually gonna see some new Jay Elec in 2011?

  2. Jay kickin on dead bodies, there’s no competition

  3. wow…and that was just a SAMPLE of this man’s skills. truly incredible.

oh and some of those lyrics are off but w/e

  4. Most OVERRATED rapper ever! Dude hasn’t put out a good song in almost 2 years and he only has 2 songs that you can consider dope. Not to mention he is like 36 and way past his prime. Is he good? Yes, but HIGHLY OVERRATED. There is many dudes just as nice putting in wayyyyyyyyyyyy more work and dedication than him.

  5. Ridiculous. On another level. Love that lazy drawl on this song. Where is Jay in the video though?

  6. @Rezo he’s got Nas features on his upcoming album, selling out shows, and is on Jay-Z’s label. He only “has 2 songs” but got a Mountain Dew commercial so he’s obviously doing something right….think he gives a fuck what you think? MOVE ON

  7. although I guess him hardly being in it is typical Jay E

  8. @Rezo: This isn’t basketball, you don’t fall off at age 36, but lmao.

  9. Jay Electronice has ‘MEKA’ tatooed on his nuts

  10. I don’t think there is a such thing as a “prime” in hip-hop. If you only care about selling pop hits, then maybe he’s “old” but obviously Jay Elect doesn’t care about that type of shit. I think people like him so much because of his whole aura. He’s mysterious and spits crazy bars. You have to admit that homie has talent. And I have a lot more than 2 songs by him in my itunes.

  11. That was nice as hell. Not as cold as Cole’s but nice nonetheless.

  12. Jay Electronica is a poet from the heavens. I don’t agree with a good percentage of the shit he spits (5% theories & racists beliefs) but I still enjoy it. Oddest conundrum.

  13. @Rezo It’s sad that he only has “2 good songs” but they still shit on 90% on your favorite rappers whole catalogs. Age is just a number you just proves hip-hop fans and stans are fickle. Compare Jay Elect to other no proper debut album but mixtape artist and he makes them look like kindergarten compared to a high school senior.

  14. @ Jwii if Jay Elec is racists then I guess the Wutang clan , Rakim , Krs one , Nas , Jay z , Common , Mos def , Talib , Andre 3k , Busta Rhymes and a whole other list of MCs who speak on the same shit are racists too. The things hes speakin on are backed up by history unless you can prove different. Its more about the feeling of his music then the theories behind his bars cause if we gonna sit here and nit pick at the meaning of all his rhymes we’ll be here forever. Jay Elecs music wont fully be understood until time has gone by. Take the Wu tang forever album for example , its so packed with knowledge most people were still catching new meaning to the words 5 and 10 years after it dropped. Its gonna be the same with Jay Elec…and this freestyle = DOPE

  15. niggas need to listen to real rap again

    http://thedetroitzuu.blogspot.com/2011/03/new-artist-highlight.html

  16. @sayWORD – Yo, this wasn’t as good as vocal quality as Cole’s, but thats about it. Jay Electronica is spitting shit thats in a whole different dimension than anything J. Col can come up with. That’s just a fact.

  17. This is legggggit. Real life real raps.

  18. I WANT NEW JAY ELEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@$#@$

  19. I agree that Jay Elect is overrated. On every Jay Elect post on any rap blog people are acting like he is up there with Biggie and Pac. He is dope, but if you give most lyrical rappers as long as Jay Elect takes to release new music, they would come out with lyrics on Jay Elect’s level.

  20. Nobody touches this. Jay is outside the box that we all live in. I don’t care in the slightest about the shitty quality. I’ll take highest quality music over high quality sound.

  21. seriously, this lyricism is amazing

  22. Dope.

  23. Stay Thirsty – It doesn’t matter that those dudes COULD come up with the stuff Jay writes, it matters that they simply DON’T. I could do it too, possibly, but I don’t. The only thing I know is that Jay makes better music than all these other fools, and you gotta give him cred for that.

  24. jay electronica is amazing his lyrics always make me think spiritually metaphysically dude is on another level lyrically peace to the god

  25. Jay Electronica > J.Cole

  26. Jay Elec is dope af, But iDo think niggas over hype him as ppl do J. Cole & Spitta On This Site iMean this aint wack by any means jus stop gassin him up like that. Not everything he makes is “epic” or wateva jus chill.

  27. @Rezo you hate on EVERYTHING they post on this site GO SOMEWHERE ELSE

  28. Not everybody is gonna like Jay Elecs music but thats prolly cause they over analyze him cause the rhymes have so many layers that its hard not too. Like even myself is left with the puzzled face after he spits sometimes but its a good thing. His music has a certain kind of aura and vibe to it that this generation hasnt seen before and thats why I think its exciting and a blessing to the game right now but people have to just enjoy the ride and ask questions later. Stop THINKING and start FEELING his music cause the meaning of the words will naturally come to you later. Alot of kids out there never seen or heard a God MC , they think the highest level of bars is lil Wayne and Eminem and its time to let them see another dimension of MC

  29. really? this is what we’ve been waiting for?

gimme back my fucken lawnmower you unreliable cunt.

  30. how does he only have 2 “good” songs? last time i counted its in the neighborhood of 30 or 40. Haters gonna hate.

  31. I honestly didn’t care too much for this one, thought it was a lil off of the beat like maybe someone threw his audio over the instrumental, maybe it was the sound he was going for? but with that said Jay Elec is def my fav rapper right now! nobody in rap without a debut album is even near his level! can’t wait for Act II

  32. @stay thirsty

Well, lyrically and skill-wise Jay Elec SHITS on Pac. Quality > Quantity.

  33. @uncsam

Jay Elec is nice but lyrically he does not shit on Pac dude. Lets not take things too far.

  34. God MC… I mean what more is there left to say?

  35. @marty mcfly, the things Jay Elec speaks on aren’t backed up by history. No black scientist went into the earth and blew it up and that’s not how the moon came into existence. Declaring black men as black gods is not proven by history. If Eminem went about saying THE WHITE GODS, you know the kind of reception he’d receive?

Most 5% theory is racist rhetoric no matter if it’s spit by Wu-Tang or Common (who’s had racist lyrics) or Mos Def (who’s also had racist lyrics). They might not be racist in real life but at one point or another they’ve held down racist beliefs enough to write them down and spit them.

  36. i don’t think these dudes are racist racist, just racist

they don’t hate white folk, they just deeply detest the history they have with them

5% nation was a good thing and can still be to a point…that point being that it instills a sense of pride in the black youth after that sense of self worth was beaten out of their forefathers and instilled in them by their parents and modern society

i don’t think RZA is a 5%er anymore, he’s grown out of that, and embraced larger ideas

  37. wtf does black on black anti-semite rap mean?

  38. Nate Dogg died RIP

  39. if there was a steady flow of Jay E music then it’s hard to say he wouldn’t be one of the best in the game….shit i consider him one of the best in the game now even tho he puts out 6 songs a year… maybe lol

    RIP NATE DOGG

  40. “just cause you don’t understand him, don’t mean that he nice.” – Jay-Z

  41. @JW111
To the idiot saying that BLACK GOD is a myth you might want to research the following because the history of the black god in history and science is irrefutable. Off the top of my head right now Jesus (Christianity), Yahweh (Judaism), Allah (Islam), Osiris (Egyptian/Kametic), Isis (Egyptian/Kametic), Min (Egyptian/Kametic), Quetzalcotl (South America), Visnu (Hindu), Krishna (Hindu), Buddha (Budism) ARE ALL BLACK GODS HISTORICALY. If they don’t appear black now is because they have been changed by other NON BLACK PEOPLE.

  42. @Black TY

The Semitic languages consist of Arabic, Hebrew, South Arabic, Akkadian, , and Syriac (Syrian). The Semitic languages are a BLACK language, meaning that BLACK PEOPLE are and where the first originators and speakers of the language. Not only is the language black but the Gods of those languages are BLACK.

So when some one is Anti Semitic they are really Anti BLACK because Black people are the original Semites. White Jews and mixed breed so called Arabs and Jews are not Semites they are imposters only posing as Semites.

So when he says BLACK on BLACK Anti Semitic rap he is talking about his rhymes going against or opposing other black rappers like black on black crime and violence, thus making him Anti Semitic.

If you continue to listen to the rest of his verse he continues to talk bad about and harming other blacks (for a brief time) being Niggers or Niggas ect….

  43. BLACK GOD< yea…thats not exactly proof that god is actually black. that just means a bunch of religions had their god portrayed as black..but considereing they nor YOU have seen god u dont know if god is black or in fact has a colour etc

  44. AND stop saying stuff like its “science” and “irrefutable” YOU have not seen god dude.

  45. @TRUTH
And for the record I have seen God. Just because you haven’t seen God doesn’t mean you have to sully others that have.

Also.. When did history not become “proof”. If by “proof” you mean actual video camera or Polaroid picture evidence of the existence of GOD, then that is a moot point. Many of the ancient civilizations painted, built monuments, statues, painted pictures, and sculptures of their actual BLACK GOD. If you want more proof besides the emphatic and detailed historical accounts of God then that’s on you and not HISTORY or “SCIENCE’. The definition of Science means to KNOW and History is a accumulation of known facts and accounts. So the science and history are synonymous and interchangeable and that’s why I use the terms ‘science”.

    Peace 7

  46. @ Jwill , Your saying Jay Elec is racist and to be honest with you its kind of strange to me when white people say blacks are racists against them cause where can you show me that in history ? You are looking to deep into what 5%ers stood for and you have to consider the evolution of the black mind between the times of slavery to the early 1960s to now. Why do people try to figure out GOD , please stop cause whoever GOD is hes wiser then you and me thats just bottom line. When black people used to call each other GODS it was to build up their self esteem and remind them that even though our true history was hidden from us that we come from people in Africa that were civilized , we built the pyramids and to this day scientist can not explain how that was possible. We invented math and science and many other things. They are still diggin up evidence of black men even today that left behind writings about the solar system and the anatomy of the human body. So black people mite not be GODS but we damn sure are GOD-LIKE and just because I love myself and my people does not mean I hate whites. When you read things about 5%ers that were written by people who lived in the 1950s you have to consider that not all 5%ers thought and acted the same. You cant say because a group of 5%ers hated whites that all 5%ers hated whites but wouldnt you hate whites if you lived back then ? The fact is from day one whites have tried to destroy my people and that is fact , am I mad at all whites ? OF course not but do I believe in the 5% theories ? yes but in a way that has evolved over time , you say blacks can be racist but we dont try to destroy you like you try to destroy us so how can we be a threat to you ? Black people dont know there history because the first time we are mention in the history books was when they came to make us slaves and we were around for a thousand years before that. White peoples history goes back in books to almost the stone age and their painted as heros and Kings and Queens when really thats not what your people were. I am not mad at white people who live today and who aint racist but its just true that white people destroyed the native americans with guns and alcohol and religious lies and the thinking that they were better then everybody. That shit still goes on , have you been to the ghetto ? There is a liquor store on every corner , theres guns everywhere and drugs. We did not bring those things into the ghetto cause those things a created in other countries. I know the law very well and its designed to make people slaves. We didnt write those laws. Jay Elec did not live in ancient times and the things he saying is just a fraction of the black mind. We come from people who were intelligent and that fact is not shown in history. There were ten year old black kids who could tell you all about the 120 Lessons back when the original 5%ers lived and even today adults mind cant do that. I myself come from a christian background and when I was ten my folks made me read and memorize the entire bible and I did and to be honest most peoples mind cannot do that. I am not special but if anybodies mind is forced to apply itself you cant even imagine what the human brain can do. That goes for all races. Black history is not just black history , its all of mankinds history but people today and back 50 years ago got black people twisted. WE ARENT GODS BUT WE ARE GODLIKE IN EVERY WAY. IF are true history was ever told it would make peoples feel a certain way to know that almost everything was created in africa in some way shape or form. People say africa is not advanced but yes it is , have you been there ? On TV the show africans running around in the forest but they dont show the cities there with people who live and think just like we do. There were black people who lived a thousand years before slaves and it took hundreds of years to divide and enslave us and that is not told in history. There were slaves of all races in history but we are the ones singled out because we were the Kings and Queens that are the hardest to trick with lies and evilness. I could go on forever im sure you know that but as Black people we have a certain kind of soul and deep spirituality about us and in my opinion we are GODS. and no I didnt proof read this cause I gotta run but a 5%er of today loves all people but also loves his own.

  47. Lol @ ppl debating gods skin color. what’s the point? Why do rappers put shit like that in their rhymes? To prove what? And IF “god” was black, so what? Alls it does is cause division. Oh yah thats right they are spittin that “real shit” lol. There is no proof what gods race was, is, or will be. Ppl always want to debate subjective matters as if the way they think is the truth. Stfu with that shit….move on……anyway jay elect has so much skill working with words and rhyme schemes even if I don’t always agree with him

  48. I promise you that the school books and the news channels on Tv Tell you a billion more lies then Jay Elecs music ever could. You have been told lies for the last 500 years , Jay Elec just been putting out music for the last 4 or 5 years so please just enjoy the music and think with an open mind.

  49. Black God I don’t want to seem like an asshole but I don’t know…

    Indians are black now?
Yahweh? Meaning God (of Christianity), Judaism, and Islam is black?

I also don’t see how Quetzalcoatl could be a black god unless there was contact between Africa and South America. I’d need to see some pretty irrefutable proof to consider that.

  50. @red , the proof is out there. There was contact to everything on the plant at one time just look at the map. There were pyramids in south america and in africa and that didnt just happen like that. Thats just a small piece of the whole picture

  51. People need to get off race and religion and just try to understand the words in this one freestyle and other JE songs. Thats alot more interesting and universal because the more people listen to Jay Elec with division over race and religion in their hearts your gonna miss out on the dynamics of some great music.

  52. @BlACK GOD Peace 7 , I know where coming from but I said my piece and im going to let you guys finish talking now but I got love for everybody no matter your race or beliefs. Jus sayin

  53. You dumb asses debating GOD’s skin color, lol idiots. you cant even add 1/2 and 1/3, but you are so smug about your subjective racist bullshit. All of you people whining about racism are just finding excuses for being failures, and if you are not a failure – you are giving excuses to others out of the dumb shit of your mind because racism is not institutionally applied. Yes, somebody may give you an awkward eye, but so can he give it to someone who has red hair, someone fat, someone thin, someone tall, someone short etc STFU about racism because OU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED IT, nor does it make me as a white person, or a yellow person or whatever color bracket your racist ass wants to put me hold any responsibility for what people of earlier generations did to you. jesus christ, nobody in europe is suing greeks for the fact tat they had slaves do all their work while they could jerk off the whole day. And it is all not to mention that there is no god

  54. Move on truth

  55. @truth
Every single black person who is alive now has or will experience racism on more then one occasion.

  56. People are missing a very important thing about Jay that he touches on quite often. This dude is either a real life extraterrestrial, or he thinks he is one. Even in some of his oldest tracks he makes reference to this, and not in the “im an alien on a spaceship” type of way like Wayne does. He is serious.

Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge): “[He's] a weird-looking cat. His ears are kind of pointy. He has a square head. He looks like he’s an alien…but in a very beautiful way. Like some kind of mythical creature who would have a bow and arrow on his back and wings under that bow and arrow.” – Erykah Badu

In an interview he did with SPIN, hes asked about lyrics from Exhibit C which hint that his path was destined “”Exhibit C,” which hint that his path is destined. “I used to get dizzy spells, hear a little ring / The voice of an angel telling me my name / Telling me that one day I’m-a be a great man.”.

When asked about that line he replied like this:

“Yeah, it’s funny,” he says. “You write these things, but you never expect to be questioned on them.” A nervous laugh is followed by a long silence. “I can’t say this. This is going to be absolutely crazy if I say this. If I told you, it would have to be off the record. Matter of fact, you are going to have to sign a nondisclosure agreement and then I can tell you. This is personal personal. People will be like, ‘Oh, that nigga is crazy.’ ”

I think he’s joking. But suddenly, Jay gets up and starts poking around purposefully in the closet. Nothing but four pairs of sneakers and a charcoal-gray suit. He scans a table. Just a digital camera, candles, and a pair of dice. He moves to the living room. No agreement. Jay never finds a hard copy, so he punches it up on his iPhone. (Yes, the document actually exists.) Alas, he decides against me even reviewing it, saying that if I read it out loud, the entire interview will be off the record.

    Alien.

  57. @truth hurts I completely concur.

  58. Some of you need to do your research on history before you talk.

  59. @Truth lacks the respect and mental amplitude to make such a claim. The belief that your words merit truth is as pretentious as the other commenters talk of being slighted against. You don’t own the level of experience you are drawing from. I am almost certain your apathetic view is marred by the fact that nothing racist has ever happened to you and your own. You find there talks to be nothing more than excuses to explain there lack of position, but that does not dismiss the prevalence of racism in everyday society. There is this preconceived notion that racism is dead when in reality it is not. I admit it is not as rampant as it once was, but it’s still there. TThis past week alone, I watched a fight turn to a bloody situation and the aggressor say, “Man fuck that n***a.” He said it multiple times, (probably in an attempt to look hard) and he was latino, lets not even start on Miss anti-asian who’s all through the news, but that is the real world. I would agree that it shouldn’t be used as a crutch to facilitate ones misfortune, but don’t you take this self righteous stand in dismissing a fault of american culture that plagues us everyday.

And talk of religion is always a fire starter, why even bother?

  60. for every white douche bag that seriously calls a black man “nigger” there is a black douche bag that calls a white man “cracker”. Though the n-word may carry more history, they are both racially motivated labels that should be removed from society…We obviously haven’t figured out that simply bitching about a problem and placing blame on other parties does not work. This this sense of a utopic africa/north america before the white man came over and ruined everything is complete bullshit. No one is arguing that the atrocities committed in slavery should not be acknowledged, but the fact remains that more black men/women have done well for themselves in america than any other place in the world. Maybe if black men such as barack obama or jc watts became the role models of black youth rather than weezy, jeezy, gucci, waka….the list goes on.. things may be different. I don’t particularily care for obama but i think his embodiment of a strong black male is infinitely valuable.
I like a lot of what truth said..I’m tired of paying the debt of my grandparents 8 times removed. The fact remains that America has blossomed into the most free nation in the world. Slavery STILL happens–Google it– on the east african coast and is practiced in the middle east by radical islamist nations…(go figure).. Why don’t we focus our attention on expelling that slave trade rather than discussing United States’ slavery 150+ years removed?
I’ll tell you why… RACE. The white Anglo American is always the enemy.. It has nothing to do w/ the issue of slavery.. If it did, we’d be up in arms about the slavery still happening today. I don’t mean to offend anyone…we all obviously love hip-hop and that common denomination brings us all together like no other I feel. A room together w/ all you c sectioners would be nothing short of incredible.
    I’ve said my piece..Deuces

  61. The fact that people see a black man as only a rapper or a thug is a misconception promoted by the media. You know how many black man are teachers and doctors in this country ? Those positive truths are never told and I dont think people fully understand america. Blacks were not even considered to be equal to whites until 1965 by law. If you speak on Obama try to understand this , everyday hes works around white people that hate him so much if they could kill him and get away with it they would. Imagine him having a closed door meeting with republicans and him walking into a room with 50 white people in it that hate him and having to discuss the problems in this country. When I or many others express anger at white people , im not talking about the average white guy in the streets. Im talking about the 80 year old guy whos been in government for 50 years who represents 1000s of other guys like him ( young politicians too ) who still use the same political views and laws from the 1800s. Im talking about the news channels and TV show networks that promote stereotypes and tell lies and half truths to the people. Im talking about the close minded person that hates blacks but never tried to get to know one in their life. Just because the people who keep the unbalance of almost everything in this country move in silence does not mean they dont exist. What is upsetting is when people say blacks have nothing to be mad about and since slavery is over so I should just be happy. Thats like telling a muslim he has nothing to worry about when everyday the feds are locking up muslims who have never been terrorist a day in their life. If you read your local newspaper you will come across a racist act committed against blacks every week. Do others have racist acts happen to them ? Yes but does that mean I should be happy ? No. If you are a white person who is not racist then you should know that I and other people who are upset about the treatment of blacks are not talking to you so its no need to get mad or defend your race when its not you who is being discussed. Im talking about the people in power in this country who have a hand in putting things in place in government and 9 times outta ten that person will be white like every president in this country before Obama. If your white and call me a nigger but you have no power then I could care less but if your white and work for a billion dollar corporation and you wanna put a message or an act of hate out in the world I have a problem with that. That is all , and yeah being in a room with everybody in this C- sec including Jay E would be interesting.
