My Review of the ’11 XXL Freshman:
Big K.R.I.T. – Well deserving, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here was a near classic, he got a new single called “Dreams” dropping some time this week
CyHi – He bodied the GOOD Friday features, but Royal Flush was overrated due to his affiliation with Kanye. Still a good MC and he deserved a spot.
Diggy SImmons – Decent mixtape, amazing lyrical ability for a 16? year older, good flow, somewhat deserving
Fred the Godson – Honestly I’ve never heard of him, but I think he is the really fat and ugly guy in the upper right hand corner of the cover?
Kendrick Lamar – Most deserving, 2 very dope projects, only problem is his beat selection and choruses, TDE should have had more representatives on the cover (Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul were both deserving imo)
Lil B – Some of his music is funny but he is horrible on most of his shit, he’s got songs like Ellen Degeneress, Justin Beiber where he just repeats their name and calls it a chorus…. how the fuck is that what hip hop has come to?
Lil Twist – Typical Young Money bullshit commercial rapper, not deserving at all, less than Lil B
Mac Miller – You either love him or hate him, I happen to love his music. Kickin’ Incredibly Dope Shit was one of my favorite mixtapes of ’10 and I like the positive vibes that almost all of his music has. Deserving in my opinion
Meek Mill – Not deserving, I’ve only heard a few songs of him (most with Officer Ricky) and he doesn’t shine on any of them
YG – I only heard him on a song with Casey Veggies and he was alright, but he didn’t say any memorable
Yelawolf – Deserving, hit or miss sometimes, he’s got some sick bangers tho like Daddy’s Lambo, Pop The Trunk, Good To Go, Get the Fuck Up and I WIsh. Also, he’s signed to Shady records so he might score an Eminem feature on his debut, Radioactive.
Changes I’d make to the XXL ’11 Freshman:
Emilio Rojas (for Fred the Godson) – He’s put in a lot of work and has four dope projects all filled with bangers.
XV (for Lil B) – He’s got two really special mixtapes (Everybody’s Nobody & Vizzy Zone) and started ’11 on a great note with All For Me, F.I.F.A, & my personal favorite song from him, SmallVille.
SchoolBoy Q (for Lil Twist) – Setbacks is filled with the best smoking music since Kush & OJ, that alone should have put him on the cover.
Casey Veggies (for Meek Mill) – Even tho he’s only 17, he rarely disappoints with his projects, and released a top 3 mixtape of ’10 with Sleeping in Class.
Dom Kennedy (for YG) – One of the best newcomers from the youthful “new west.” From The Westside, With Love and FutureStreet/DrugSounds are both way above average mixtapes.

This list is very polarized, half deserved it completely (Yelawolf, Kendrick, Big K.R.I.T., CyHi, and Mac Miller), each one put out at least one high quality project and exhibit true artistry. The others are all gimmicks. XV, Tyler the Creator, Dom Kennedy, Casey, Ab-Soul, and SchoolBoy Q all deserve a spot. Lil B and Diggy are both novelties that I can handle, no one is going to call Lil B a good MC, but he has created such a buzz that I can see how he was selected. They doing it really B.I.G. honestly, but the only thing that questions me, and i mean really got me puzzled, is Lil B…. He may have not been out solo but he has been out, so like wtf? Like I’m not knocking his music, cause music is music, I honestly do have a song or two on my ipod with him, but hey…..and Vado a nutt lol…XXL puts you on the radar when you think about it. No Cory Gunz and no One Be Lo on that list is goofy… Alright if Cory Gunz was on the 2010 list then they jumped the Gunz a bit. Truth be told both of those dudes are vets (arguable exception would be Gunz) I think most of the pleasant surprises that can be predicted for 2011 are in the form of resurgent vets with skills putting out top notch comeback material, namely Dre, Pharoahe Monch, Reks, Chino XL, Big Daddy Kane and Sir Mix A Lot.
I think Dirty Wormz deserve an honorable mention… they will get some major recognition in the “G-Punk/Nu metal” genre when their KABOSH project with Tech N9ne and Krizz Kaliko comes out this fall.
K.R.I.T., Chyhi, and (I guess) Yelawolf are the only inductees that belong on this list… nah fuck it, just K.R.I.T. and Cyhi. Everyone else is a joke.
