Stray Phrases – J Dilla’s Donuts

This is absolute dopeness right here…

We all know it’s (what would have been) the 37th birthday of J Dilla. Well, in October of 2010 jazz trio/NYU students Stray Phases (Storm Siegel on drums, Dave Mainella on piano and Evan Crane on bass) performed James’ instrumental masterpiece Donuts in its entirety. I’ve been listening to this over and over and over now, and I think all music fans will do the same. Major props to TheSmokingSection for unearthing this gem.

I’ve been playing Donuts at least once a day so I’ll give this a try before I jump to any conclusions.

  5. @MEKA, you have given credit to the wrong source. The Smoking Section is way late on this. Give credit where this first showed up — KevinNottingham.com, January 3rd, over a month ago.

  10. > oh what, Meka likes Dilla now? wasn’t homie talking shit on him a while ago saying he was overrated?>

find exactly where i said this, and i’ll personally hand-deliver my paycheck from this month to you.

  11. tell those people in the background to stfu.

  12. “At the risk of drawing the ire of the all-important Internets community, I’ll say that I was never the biggest Jay Dee fan. Sure, he was a great producer and I liked what he did with The Pharcyde on Labcabincalifornia, and I count Slum Village’s “Fall-N-Love” among some of my favorite songs of all time (somewhere between Mary J Blige and Smif-N-Wessun’s “I Love You” and Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”), but I never considered him to be the greatest producer of all time

the collective of hip hop hypocrites will claim that J Dilla is the greatest thing to happen to urban music since Gilbert O’Sullivan

Seeing the way J Dilla is “appreciated” now is, quite frankly, almost sickening at times.”

you didn’t say all of these things? aren’t Stray Phrases part of that “sickening” appreciation since they covered Donuts after his death?

  18. >how come my post isn’t up? i was referring to this article, Meka

and where, exactly, did i say “j dilla is overrated?”

  19. flamesssssss

  20. >and where, exactly, did i say “j dilla is overrated?”

“I was never the biggest Jay Dee fan. Sure, he was a great producer and I liked what he did with The Pharcyde on Labcabincalifornia, and I count Slum Village’s “Fall-N-Love” among some of my favorite songs of all time”

Why did you not mention Donuts there? Unless you realized it was a masterpiece within the last 8 months or so. Also, comparing J to a McRib isn’t all that flattering.

Sincere appreciation of great art is a good thing, but your description of this post seems hypocritical. It’s a big leap to sound like you have Dilla’s b-day marked on your calendar, when one year ago you said this:

“Some of his “fans” today likely did not care about him while he was alive, and the type of faux devotion he receives from them now is just wrong.”

I’m just trying to figure out how you went from A (McRib) to B (Absolute dopeness) so fast. A change of heart is cool, especially if it means you learn to appreciate the art that Dilla created, but I get the feeling you might not have given him proper spin before. Regardless, it’s not hard to interpret your previous article as labeling him overrated.
