Now this is a dope read: the Chocolate Boy Wonder sat down with VIBE and spoke on everything, from “Mecca & The Soul Brother” to “The World Is Yours” and everything in between. Here’s a snippet of what he said on one of the better of the G.O.O.D. Music offerings, “The Joy:”
Now what really fucked me up was Jay-Z being on it. I’m going to tell everybody right now. I had no clue that Kanye was going to do that. Because the way we were working on the song it was just him on it. And I jumped on it and did my adlibs. Then my man Young Guru called me and was like, ‘Yo Pete…I got a surprise for you.’ He played it for me over the phone. At first I couldn’t hear Jay’s voice too good. Guru is like, ‘You heard it?’ I’m like, ‘Nah..’ I was driving so I didn’t want to get pulled over by the cops so I just stopped the car. I heard Jay’s verse and I almost had a heart attack [laughs]! I was like, ‘Is that fucking Jay-Z??? Finally, I can’t believe it.’ But then when ‘The Joy’ didn’t come out on Kanye’s album people on Twitter and Faceback were like they brought his album because they thought it was going to be on there. But hey…maybe it will be on Watch The Throne.”
Side note: my former moniker during my “Slap-Boxing With Jesus” days, “Meka Soul,” is both a play on my full name and “Mecca & The Soul Brother.”

Thank you for that link. Finally made me get a copy of Blue Funk and Center of Attention.
Pete Rock is the greatest producer of all time.
My evidence? T.R.O.Y.
Seriously, this is what’s up. While PR probably ranks more at about #4 or 5 in my book, he’s definitely one of the best to do it. Period.
I didnt know PR produced Kilo. Is he even credited for that?
seriously joy was one of the better tracks from that whole kanye my beautiful dark fantasy good friday jay-z verse was really good hopefully they will get pete on watch the throne
What’s everyone’s favorite PR track?
Mine is either T.R.O.Y. or Half Man, Half Amazin.
The whole All Souled Out EP was incredible. Mecca… and Main Ingredient are undeniable classics, but ASO is so flawless to me.
Fav non-ASO tracks would be Straighten it Out, I Gotta Love, One In A Million, The Bitch In Yoo, Tru Master, Be Easy…there’s so many. The Joy is probably right up there too.
@ red T.R.O.Y , The Game , Da Two and #1 Soul Brother from Soul Survivor 1 , Head Rush , Beef and Its A Love Thing from Soul Survivor 2. The last song from the NY Finest album ft Papoose , Gzs Up by Jim Jones and Boston by Edo G… Thats what I can think of off the top of the head but I could go on for hours about Pete Rock tracks.
And Shut en down by Public Enemy. OMG that was DOPE
The Joy >>>>> H.A.M.
The Joy strangles H.A.M. to death. I don’t understand why Kanye had to cut that track from the album.
They didn’t make mention of his work on Talib Kweli’s Eardrum Lp.
Bumps “stay around”
Someone seriously dis liked Pete Rock’s Catalog ? We need to be able to identify said person to beat some sense into them…..
that’s great that he gets excited over Jay doing a verse to his track, but since H.A.M. came out now we can only hope that it’s more along the lines of what Kanye promised (Pete Rock, Madlib, etc.). Watch the Throne should strictly be for the heads.
