The topic of the video is whether Kanye is responsible for the evolution of fashion in hip hop. I’ll respond to that quip with a resounding “fuck no” since fashion in hip hop has been around longer than he’s been alive, but I will agree to a point where he is responsible for changing the way some things are today.
Hip Hop, Video

I’d have to say Kanye is responsible for the evolution of hip-hop fashion. He ‘ushered’ in a new era of fashion for hip-hop.
How is Big Sean gonna elevate fashion in hip-hop when he always rocks a snapback and the same v-neck with the YSL pin and the hankey? I fux with dude but c’mon son..
Yeah “Skinny Ass Pants” Cloth’s that a nigga from the hood could never own (maybe one day). Oh and a attitude of fashion rich people can just look down upon us with.
OH! and were the fuck is Finally Famous Vol.3 No DJ!!!
jay z (button up era lol) then kanye oh and pharrell dont forget about bapes n all that came from that and worst GOAT big sean been rockin certain clothes tht inspired kanye but kanye was bigger n brought it to the masses, y u think he keeps certain young minds around. oh n honorable mention the clipse who been rocking clothes a little too ahead of their peers to the point they get no recognition when it catches on. oh and also tisa every1 rockin his stuff now.
but as usualy everything is in a cycle u cant forget the whole jerk movemnet that happened n every1 going bk to 80s clothes its just keeps goin in a circle man.
@BillyClint Lol. But Pharrell came out when i was young with a good style i like to rock today.
^yep missed out pharrell.
oh wait i did mention pharrel in my 1st sentence lol
Jay-z
Pharrell
Clipse
Big Sean
Curren$y
Kanye… All of them iSeen had people followin how they dressed & Dont forget Dipset, Cam had alot of niggas wearin pink *Facepalm* and Jim Jones had niggas wearin rocker chains and shit and wearing tight ass clothes. But wayne swagger jacked that from em jus like he took spittas swag. & Nelly made AF1′s popular again.
Yeah, the key word is “evolution”, not solely responsible.
And as for tight pants, niggas were rocking those in the early era of hip-hop.
As much as I respect Kanye, no fucking way.
Everybody’s been rocking fashion from Pharrell, Diddy, Run DMC…so many other pioneers.
Kanye’s just a hypebeast in my opinion, nothing more and nothing less. He justs happens to be in the spotlight
if kanye was responsible for fashion in hip hop, motherfuckers would look like Prince everywhere you go
watcha think about lrg these days
@cotter
everyone who owned or had LRG is a bandwagonist
@ XB i liked LRG before i knew rappers wore it Know b.o.b fans getting on my nerves!
Kanye definitely pioneered a big change. When he first started rocking polo (the way he did)….that shit took over. Polo golf shirts, and Blazer jackets of all kind were flying off shelves. Everywhere you looked, people were wearing polo shirts(w/collar popped)….blazers….and backpacks everywhere they went. But i definitely think that Pharrell (along with Kanye), made the “fitted” clothing popular.
Alright I gotta drop my $.02
Back in the day, I wore gear that motherfuckers would LITERALLY make fun of me wearing. Vans, Etnies, etc. Fitted shirts were my shit wayyyyyy before Kanye EVER came out. Now, I’m not saying Kanye had NOTHING to do with it – but honestly the skate scene had alot more to do so. I would go to school everyday, wearing what I wanted to wear whether my jeans were fitted or not – and bet your ass someone had something to say. Now, its crazy cause all you whack ass hypebeasts that jump ship when you see a whack ass nigga rapping wearing LRG and think yo I gotta get that shit.
Dickriders.
@LOLWTF MY POINT EXACTLY!!! i have all ways liked cloths with chinese/japanese writing on it, you know shit like that. know everybody that said i was lame wearing it and act like they invented it! and i was wearing polo shirts Everybody was still wearing long ass T-shirts but look know!! At least i still got my Marc Ecko to my self.
I keeps it real. LOL follow me my people.
Its all bullshit man, people would be like wtf you got a skateboard for? Bitch cause I skateboard.. I’ve been on the scene, I been wearing vans. Now everyone wanna pull that “Yo yo I’m a trendsetter” – no the fuck your not.
uknowcool < LOL had no idea ppl associated lrg with b.o.b i didnt think ppl actually wore it as any kinda statement
and sad to say dipset did start alot of trends that ppl are tryin to get off like an addiction that rock skull n crossbones look is just about on its way out but damn if it didnt help ed hardy b4 it left.
uknowcool< wat u mean japanese/chinese writing? u mean like evisu type stuff?
NY is the trendsetter. With all this shit – music, fashion, everything.
dnt forget andre3k he did start alot of stuff but just took it a lil over board 247 but dude was on that puff daddys butler type stuff b4 kanye
@BillyClint nall i’m stuff you think a Wanna be Lupe Fiasco would were.
3k did start alot – I give you that. I believe that southern fly shit all started with him actually. But when it comes to Hip-Hop, and setting trends Harlem, the BX and just NY in general had shit on lock.
why do ya’ll wear what another man wears? you guys can’t find shit to wear on your own? Have to rock cuz another man rocks it that’s pretty fuckin sad…………
Cosign @LOLWTF
I was doing me back in school and the same shit peeps was clowning me for, they’ve been making fads of it since 03, so i just continue to do me til this day.
ya’ll are all fuckin’ retarded. I think kanye IS responsible for the evolution of fashion in hip-hop. When him and his “crew” went to fashion week all you bitches were talkin about how much of a faggot he looked like, now all you fuck faces are trying to scrape change together to buy anything you see in GQ. And what do you know Meka?? You gonna start puttin together a fashion blog since you know so much?
AHAHHAHAHAHAHAH nigga Kanye came out in like what 02-03..
Trust me he didnt start shit.
^Evolution HIPHOPISDEAD, much like Humans are part of evolution and not the originators.
Yeah, I understand that.. but Kanye didn’t start shit.
Besides his music being dope, the fashion trends ya’ll “think” he started actually were started by a white guy.
Sucks right, I know.
I think Lupe at the glastonbury concert started that whole wearing all black thing in hip hop thats just now dying out. Im glad too cause wearing all black all the time is ugly. Right after that concert , Jay z started wearing all black and terrance from 106 n park. That trend sucked. However I do think Kanye west made people step their clothes game up. Sad thing is if you gotta be told or shown how to wear clothes right , you have no swag.
kanye brought that style to the spotlight since everybody other than him wasn’t able to… he’s not solely responsible but he has a big part to do with the evolution.
@hiphopisdead no shit you fuckin’ idiot. Nobody originates shit. the idea of white people isn’t even original retard…also you put the wrong word in quotes. maybe you should have tried “started” instead. the only thing you were right about is your name…
How do you agree with me one sentence, then disagree the next?
I mean seriously, you contradict yourself in the following sentence..
Kill yourself.
Finally Famous 3 No DJ has been up for weeks on hwoodandvinyl-dot-com. Just search for it in the search bar.
I think that Kanye started the trend of trying to take the spotlight of somebody who is winning and make it all about him…
like how I’m opening up for Big Sean in Oakland on January 9th and that you should LIKE Rocky Palos on Facebook
Kanye is responsible for Big Sean trying to act like he had a fucking clue about high fashion. Guy is canned corn, stop posing. Snap-back hats and a LV belt doesn’t make you fashionable, you dolt.
Kanye brought all that GAY SHIT to hip hop fashion. I think Skateboard culture and their companies has had more of an impact on “streetwear/urban” fashion in the past 10 yrs than anything else.
Lil wayne is the most influential nigga in hop hop. he made skinny jeans cool. eating pussy acceptable. dreads cool. even bloods cool. gangs literally switched colors bacause of wayne. The average nigga you see on the street looks more like lil wayne than kanye. Summer u see niggas rocking V-Necks skinny jeans or camo shorts etc, thats because of lil wayne.
@idk , you think people are tryin to dress like wayne ? A year ago wayne was dressed like a rockstar. And you think gangs are wearing colors cause of him ? No. Dreads been around b4 wayne. Skinny jeans were brought in by the retro kids and eating pussy been acceptable. I aint talkin every girls stuff but with your main girl , you dont eat her pussy ? COME ON SON!!! ADAM ATE EVES PUSSY IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN. OK
Pharrell and his Nigo/SK8thing sidekicks are probably of the most influencial hip hop trend setters. I mean aren’t straight cut jeans in now largely coz of this dude’s BBC… Colouful hipsteresque shits these guys revolutionized too, minimilism in their designs etc. I remember when Lil wayne had beef with the Clipse coz he thought they directed Mr. Me too at Him.. That fool weezy rockt pink/purple bape hoodies back in the day *FACT*.
Btw Big sean and his TISA can sucka dick.. TISA is plain trash… I’ve seen Sean wear those trashy old pink/grey LV YEEZY sneakers 2.. dudes fashion sense is monotonous and mediocre. HATE!
lol big sean’s answer to everything is kanye west………..
HermesThiefGod< yea the clipse was rockin that stuff obviosuly first tho lol i think SOME of the tisa stuff is aite tho
Bill, now can u or any fashion guru explain to me Y havin a BMW or farrari symbol on your clothing, makes that shit look cool? #just sayin
…their LOGO tho, not the type.. The actual TISA logo symbol(the Cat shit) is mad dope…
Porsche rather* not ferrari
Kanye bites white peoples fashion styles. That is a reality.
Wanna get in details, remember Fly Society? Yah thought so nigga. So Pharell and them been on that type shit. People are just caught up in the hype.. Hence the name ‘Hypebeasts’.
cosign – KANYE DIDNT START SHIT
co-sign Swaggerific..
White designers mite have created those clothes but I really dont think black people wear the clothes like white people do. Its not a diss but keep it real , black people add swag to it and style to everything we do. Black people also wear clothes for us by us as well. Sean john for example. I read on another section some guy sayin white people know more about hip hop the blacks and that we dont go to rock the bells and shit. Now I read that black people bite white peoples style? My question is when did black people on this site start makin comments in a negitive way toward white people ? We are not makin these type of statements so why would you come out and say Kanye a kid from chicago where style is a must. Is some how biting white people ? Be serious , we dont wear clothes the same. Honestly
Style goes both ways , its not one race biting another. You got both sides wearing skinny jeans , and both sides putting grillz in they mouth and chains around they neck. The prep , upscale polos and sweaters style is being worn on both sides so lets just keep it real.
“then I spent 400 bucks on this.. just to be like nigga you aint up on this”
Fuck Skinny jeans.
Last thing when I was young I dressed alot better then kanye and I had no idea the race of the designers whos clothes I wore. I didnt know any white people well enough to bite there style. I just wanted to look nice , in the nineties it wasnt about race when it came to cool kids. I didnt know Tommy hill was white or nothin I just wanted to be fresh end of story. I tried to be quite yall but nobody else would speak up so I went in.
It’s not about who rocked what first. Fashion as an industry was NOT connected to hip-hop in the same way that it is now prior to Kanye. Sure people followed the stylistic trends in hip-hop pre-Kanye, but was L.L. Cool J sitting front row at Tommy Hilfiger’s runway shows? Merchandising does not equal fashion either. I mean for fucks sake Kanye interned in fucking fashion house. He actually designed his fucking Nike shoe! Tinker Hatfield didn’t just create some shit based off of themes from “Jesus Walks”, THE NIGGA DREW HIS OWN SHOE. Look at it this way, Jordan didn’t invent the free throw line dunk, the fadeaway, or the three-peat but he took all those things to the next level. Kanye wasn’t the first to have a stylistic influence on hip-hop but he is definitely taking it to a new level. And can we quit with this “he just dressed like white people” bullshit? Name 3 white people you know that dress like Kanye… I’ll wait.
^^^Haha agreed
@ CB
Nah dude, Kanye is inspired by every single French fashion show he goes to (And he goes to them alot). Those are white designers, white models. Have you ever seen those outlandish shits the guys rock on those runways (Now homo). That’s Kanye West. Besides he said so himself. It’s sad but its true (no racism intended I’m coloured, anyway)
Okay its not sad its just true lol. Ha!
Oh and he did not design the Air Yeezy by himself…
hermes if you spelt ‘a lot’ correctly, I’d take you seriously. also I doubt all of the designers are white. also I would guess kanye is inspired but a fuck ton more than European fashion shows. this is kinda a dumb argument whatever it is cause fashion is fuckin fashion, shit is ALWAYS going to change fuck giving one person credit its a movement yall
he also co designed his louis vuitton kicks, says somethin!
i love how this nigga commented on spelling with a mispelling. alot v. a lot is nitpicky. spelt does not exist. dumbass
its spelled. and ya i spelled its wrong. i did it on purpose.
Exactly Oh gee. This is a motherfucking Hip hop blog. Not english 101 … He interned 4 like 2months or some shit. You DO actually need input from a motherfuckin creative director if you are gna design a decent sneaker dumbass. Dude didn’t study fashion design
Actually lo Oh Gee it can be spelt either way.. i shouldn’t be correcting u since u backed me up plus i’d be contradicting myselg about this being english 101 ha!… Oh and of course I know it’s a lot. fuckin douchebag.. I study PPE nigga. Look that shit up.
Last bit at justenjoy
@Hermes
Sure someone had to turing Kanye’s sketches into something they could actually make, but virtually no celeb that has a shoe sketches the damn thing. I think you are mistaking the fact that he is actually involved in the creative process to mean that the nigga hand stitched every shoe. Jordan didn’t draw any of his shoes: Tinker Hatfield came in with drawings and said “This is supposed to represent this…” and he said “That shit’s fire. Make it.” Jordan, Kobe, whoever doesn’t come in with entire sketches of the shoe and say “How about something like this.”
Sure his looks are inspired by runway shows, but they are inspired by others and some times this inspirations come from African culture (i.e. the big ass Horus chain the nigga has been wearing for the past 6 months). We as black people need to stop worrying about who did what first and start trying to figure out how to do shit the best. Maybe if we stopped worried about whether or not white people are doing something and just did what the fuck we wanted we would have more black fashion designers. And regardless of how long he interned, the fact that he did intern says something. And lets keep in mind that his career isn’t in fashion, it’s in music. Who stops their career for a year or 2 just to follow a hobby?!
In closing, spelling errors don’t make an argument invalid, and pointing them out has the tendency of making you looking even more like a jackass than the person that misspelled.
@ CB and @Hermes and @HIPHOPISDEAD , Then how many more things do we have to create , pioneer and bring into the entertainment business and many other businesses before we can get some fuckin respect.
Fashion and hip hop has gone hand and hand since the beginning of the culture. Back in the day, some of the street cats or doe boys would seriously be up on their fashion. They would be in LV, Gucci and Bally before even Uptown White cats got it. That trickled down to the youth, that were into hip hop and flashing your steez. Run DMC basically put a shoe company on their back. Tommy Hilfiger was only poppin during the mid-nineties, when hip hoppers were rocking it (check their revenue and profit margin since then). Pharell honestly ushered in the whole “I’m really, really up on fashion” movement. He was into Japanese designers in the Late 90′s.
To say white people made Kanye dress the way he does is fair but wrong. We rock shit way different than they do. Look at how we used to flip Wallies, turning them different colors and being creative….
And to all those still holding on to those Fubu super baggy joints, don’t worry, they’ll be back one day. Till then, just shut up with the fitted jeans= gay thoughts
