People are expecting too damn much from rappers these days. He’s good. He’s not garbage and he’s trying to be his own artist and his own man. That alone should at least give you his respect. Nobody can be super uber lyrical. So we can atleast give props when it comes to content. Dude doesnt rap about bullshit even when he has more than enough reason to do so.
So even if you cant get into him you cant call him whack because his music proves that he’s tryin to be more than Run’s son. He’s trying to be more than a rapper talking about money all the time. He wants to connect with people and thats the mark of an artist.
You know, while some kids are trying to blow up by rapping over Lex Luger beats, Diggy been rhyming over classic hip hop beats. It’s a shame when you have an East Coast kid who grew up privileged, have the balls to rhyme over classic grimy NY sh** and he get bashed for touching a classic beat. Diggy is paying homage where he’s from, and I f***ing respect that. That’s why hip hop stay losing; when an ambitious kid at least show a glimpse of promise and have his head on straight to rep the culture, nobody wants to give props where props are due. There’s always room for improvement.

What you gotta understand is that people are gonna go hard on him due to the fact that Diggy didn’t have an upbringing like other artists in his position. This guy dropped 1 mixtape that nobody other than other industry people took an interest to, and one viral video, and boom he’s on the same label as T.I. and Lupe Fiasco. He doesn’t have any hardcore fans. Artists gotta do like 5+ mixtapes, videos, be known in their cities and all kinds of shit to even get a MEETING at these labels and this kid bypassed that grind due to who he is. He didn’t grind like Wiz Khalifa or any of the artists he’s worked with or jacked beats from. He’s just a kid who lurks on 2DopeBoyz like the rest of us. So with all due respect, in his case, he can’t just be good, he has to be GREAT or he’ll never be a topic of discussion again in hiphop. The real artists are coming and ain’t got no rich parents, uncles, and sisters.

The rap genre is obviously divided into niche areas content wize: weed shit, club shit, deep shit, hipster shit, drug dealing shit, gangster shit, thought provoking shit etc. and combinations of the above. And if you into just a couple @Bill, fine whateva. If i wna listen to diggy and his focus, he better be ontop of his motherfucking game 4 me 2 pay attention2. Especially coz of who backs him up/supports him, and who he hangs out with/possibly gets rhymes from.. aka “Lupe”..(im being biased in that regard I know) but anyway, I assure u that alot of listeners (me included) are not sympathetic towards how old the kid is… and just wna listen to dope music. One thing I forgot to say , is that RUN DMC , is still one of the greatest live performers that hip hop has ever seen. This kids dad is Rev Run , to alot of people that makes Diggy unlikable and im not mad at that. But what im trying to say is that at one time Rev Run had hip hop in the palm of his hand like Jay z does today. At one point Run was this nicest and to this day , the way he can command a crowd is amazing. In alot of ways RUN DMC was very hardcore and some of that is in Diggy. Now combine his influence of lupe and the financial and political security he has and what you start coming up with is some kinda hip hop voltron. When hes old enough to realize these things , hes gonna be a problem. I know I just said a mouth full but its only cause I love this game. PEACE
