How does Jay do a song with Jay Elect in a matter of a couple days but can’t do a song with Cole in almost 2 years? Oh and “A Star Is Born” doesn’t count because that was a Cole feature. When is Jay gonna be a feature on a Cole song? When his album drops March of 2013? SMH…

Pete Rock used the same sample on Got a Love on the Main Ingredient. Song is fire but it needs better mixing cos’ the audience overpowers the lyrics at times. Man, I can’t wait for Act II! A while back when he was in London he played one song the Justice League produced for him on Ustream, that shit sounded so ill.

Jay E is on another level. His music requires your full attention, otherwise you’re not picking up on all the intricacies of his songs.
I’m sailing on a cloud
They’re trailing below
My shrink told me it’s a feeling they’ll never know
I pack all my sins and I wear them to the show
I let ‘em go, let ‘em go, let ‘em go, let ‘em go
I’m sailing on a cloud
They’re trailing below
My shrink told me it’s a feeling they’ll never know
I pack all my sins and every L that I blow
I let ‘em go, let ‘em go, let ‘em go, let ‘em go
In a land before time
A land before alter boys and the gods and shrines
Man was in his prime
Look how far I go in time just to start a rhyme
The method is sublime you get blessed with every line
I’m in touch with every shrine from Japan to Oaxaca
The melanated, carbon dated phantom of the Chakras
Me and Puff, we was chillin’ in Miama
He said fuck the the underground you need to win a Grammy
For yo momma and your family
They need to see you shined up
You built a mighty high ladder let me see you climb up
Nigga what you scared of?
Tell Rocky’s, artificial rap niggas, and spread love
pollenate the ear buds
Like you supposed ta
Spit it for the culture
Pay no attention to the critics and the vultures
They’d rather have a shot of Belvy just despite you
They pass the judgements because they feel they have the right to
Fuck ‘em, I let the dice roll like my father did
I gotta shine it’s in my blood I’m a Harlem kid
I treat my babies right
I treat my lady’s lady like
Hit em with a remix to make sure that they play me twice
I thought you said its return of the black kings
Luxurious homes, fur coats, and fat chains

RU210 said this on November 15th, 2010 at 1:12 pm
There are at least 5 lines in that song where you can research just one word, start drawing the connections and learn so much more from his music.
I did that with Jay Electronica’s Voodoo Man last night
‘Sippin on Pellegrino while I’m giving out matches’
I started with San Pellegrino, the drink. Apparently the drink is from a hot spring in the town of San Pellegrino. The Bishop of Auxerre, Saint Peregrine, was martyred (during the Diolcletianic Persecution) for his attempts at abolishing pagan practices by the local people (‘Civilize the savage, criticize the parish’).
The pagan god being celebrated?, Jupiter, the god of the heavens (aliens are the whole theme of the song).
Nobody else is connecting the dots like Jay Electronica. While most people are dropping names, metaphors, and references to complete a rhyme, or even worse, to make a punchline, Jay Electronica is putting in work to go deeper than anyone else.
red said this on November 15th, 2010 at 1:12 pm

els said this on November 15th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
@Rezo
I somewhat agree with you because music in general tends to be a young persons game. You can argue that is even more apparent with hip-hop because, as a genre, it’s still pretty young itself.
-
But I don’t think that means it can’t be changed. Hip-hop by nature has been anti-trend/anti-establishment, which then of course turn into trends. Maybe Jay is creating a trend right now.
-
Honestly, if you can en-captivate the streets, you can make a name for yourself in hip-hop.
Onederin said this on November 15th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
I hope no one expects Jay Electronica to blow up. Please, as if the mainstream is cultured enough to understand his music.
The most popular song right now is Like a fuckin G6, let’s get real.
His music is for people that want to hear something artistic.
All I know is that if there is a physical copy of Act II, I will be proudly purchasing it.

panamenyo24 said this on November 15th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
So what if “Like a G6″ is number one. It’s a fun song that people like partying to.
-
Do people not realize that, on average, people aren’t looking for self-reflective, really deep songs to regularly listen to? When you want to let loose, you’re not going to look for best lyrical display you can. You want something that’s fun that’ll make you move.
-
If it’s a bad party song, that’s where you have a problem. That Far East Movement joint ain’t bad.

RSX said this on November 15th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Onederin I wasn’t trying to say that there’s anything wrong with partying or party music (In fact I have Deadmau5 playing right now).
What I was getting at is the painful truth, Jay Electronica is not blowing up.
He’s not blowing up because the majority of people like you said, aren’t looking for reflective music.
What annoys me is that life isn’t a party. Thursday, Friday, Saturday I’ll be jamming my party music, or I’ll be at the bars listening to whatever is playing in there.
But that still leaves me Sunday, Mon, Tues, and Wed when I’m at home, or I’m on campus, and life isn’t just some 7 day binge. Why do people continue to play mindless club music even during the mundane tasks?
If I’m doing schoolwork I’ll throw on Jay E, Kendrick, Cudi, Blu, etc etc, shit maybe even some classical or ambient electronica to get in the zone.
I’m not trying to hear Lil Wayne making shit jokes, or Gucci talk about his Bart Simpson when I’m trying to think.
I’m trying to be consise but this is turning into a wall of text.
Long story short:
Party for 3 days
Live life for 4 days
Leaves you 4 days to listen to music of substance
Why not educate yourself with good music
More people should be buying this, but they have no interest for their own shallow reasons

Nigga you gotta be psychotic or
Mixing something potent with your Vodka
It takes a lot to shock us…
But you being so prosperous is preposterous…
How could this nappy headed boy from out the projects
be the apple of America’s obsession?
You’re totally disconnected with reality
Don’t believe in dreams
Since when did black men become KINGs?
DOPEST VERSE THIS YEAR, hands down.

Why do people complain. Say its not good and move on. No one wants to hear you elaborate about your problems with the song. Its about the art, im sure they purposely made the quality sound like that to give it a dated sound. Its a good song listen to the lyrics and music instead of finding little shit to complain about because you know people will like the song.

Wow. No one is mentioning how amazing it is that they collabed with Charlotte Gainsbourg…she only released one of the best albums of the year.
Jay Elect did his thing also. I’m just glad to see him releasing stuff. Two songs in what, three days, is pretty encouraging.

First of all Jay Elect is 34 not 38.
Secondly co-sign Red.
Thirdly this man has toured the world and established an incredibly solid fanbase without an album or a single. People need to understand that everyone’s definition of success is different. He’s spitting about some deep shit and staying true to himself as artist, do you REALLY think he cares or even expects mainstream success? Personally I’d rather have a cult following of shepherds than millions of sheep who lose interest and hop on the dick of every new trend that comes out :/

But someone like Jay Electronica will not sell himself short from money.

@BillyClintBackwood
MC Killer Milk and Serial..
Double entendre: Jay is a MC (Milk and Cereal) Killer and Jay is a Milk (the gay movie with Sean Penn) and Serial Killer
Do people actually hear what this song is about:
Jay Elects conversation with Diddy
Jay-Z conversation with a shrink…shrink has the results of Hov’s insanity test….Hov tells shrink he has dreams of sharing covers with Warren Buffet, making it from the hood etc…shrink interupts Hov, prescribes Prozac…tells him he’ll never make it off the strip…”since when did black men become kings”
thehonorable said this on November 15th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
how is the beat wack? Not only does it vibe great, the laid-back feel of it fits the “sailing on a cloud” notion of the hook perfect, which gives the foundation for the thoughtfulness and possibility discussed in the lyrics and whole track. Great song, and Jay’s best verse this year
J said this on November 15th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
“y does every piece of ART have to be sold? to be considered a success?”
Exactly my point. I guess if you go by most people who have commented definition of success that means DOOM is unsuccessful, Dilla is unsuccessful, Little Brother is unsuccessful, Lupe is unsuccessful, Dilated People are unsuccessful.
I’m sorry I didn’t realize creating classic albums, carving your own niche and building a solid fanbase isn’t considered a success anymore. You don’t have to be mainstream to make millions and not everyone wants or cares about mainstream recognition.

1. Jay Elect’s verse was ill, as always.
2. the beat is NOT wack. it’s chill and uplifting. everyone needs to relax and have fun once in a while. not every beat has to have a hardcore snare and drum
3. this is definitely not the mastered version of the song…Jay Z’s voice sounds static-ish.
overall, this was a good song. i mean…i am expecting better shit to come out in the next few weeks (months) but for now, at least we know jay z plans on putting jay electronica out there

lol i can see some of ya talk shit without doing research
claim 1) he is 38, no hes actually 34
claim 2) his beats, do u guys not know about jay electronica’s music beyond the exhibit records?? anyone who is a real fan of his KNOWS HES EXPERIMENTAL WITH BEATS, THATS PART OF HIS STYLE! He wants people to focus on his abstract narratives so not every beat & song is gonna beat on some just blaze ish
claim 3) he only got 2 dope records, again do u guys not know anything beyond exhibit a & c? he has many dope records The pledge (eternal sunshine), so what you saying, swagger jackson’s revenge, dimethyltryptamine, something to hold on to, Victory in My Clutches, My World (Nas Salute) etc. please explore an artist that you heard songs of instead of waiting for something that gets radio play. The arguement that jay has only 2 dope songs i can very well make that very same arguement about j. cole: what huge records does he got besides lights please and who dat? (and no features dont count im talking songs of his own)? i know his mixtapes and majority of his songs but im saying i can act like his underground shit dont qualify as dope songs too
not to mention i can bring up the fact that he has no album out yet just like jay elec so cut that bullshit out.

why do people equate grammies with selling out?
ever heard Miseducation? Eminem’s first 3 cds? niggas can rap and still win grammies. Calm down. And you don’t have to sell a bajillion to get a grammy nod. Last year Mos Def was up for best rap grammy and he sold 39k his first week and it was a weird and awesome and very radio unfriendly album. I am sure big boi will be up for the best rap album grammy and he didn’t fucking sell out to do it. he also didn’t go platinum (or even gold). you can win grammies and remain dope. don’t equate the two. nigga don’t need be the most popular artist ever. but he can make critically acclaimed music and feed his family off his art.

Did I fall asleep and wake up in an alternate version of 1995? But we’ll scrutinize the Hell out of a Lupe, Wale, Drake or Eminem song right?
