Skyzoo Speaks On NYC Hip Hop and the Importance of Radio & TV (Video)

In the next segment of his sit down with the dopehouse and the good folks at TheWellVersed, Sky speaks on the importance of radio and television in 2010 and why he doesn’t want to take New York hip hop back to the 90s.

I don’t really want to go back. I want it to get back to being dope but I don’t want to relive 1995. I don’t want to relive 1989. When 1995 was here, nobody was trying to relive 1983. Why go back? You can take the same elements of what was good and apply it to now, then you can’t lose. But you just can’t say let’s redoing the past. I’m not a fan of (reliving the past).

  1. COSIGN!

  2. new j. cole!! check it out jcolefans.com

  3. it’s called “Purple Rain” ^^

  4. I co-sign everything he said 100%. Rappers only say album sales and radio don’t matter when they have an album out that flopped. The real truth is they got into the hip hop game to be successful and to make a lot of money. For a rapper to say that he doesn’t care if his album sells just makes him sound like an idiot because that would be like a pro athlete saying he doesn’t care if he wins a ring. Getting a platinum selling album is like winning a championship in sports, that is the main point. People in hip hop circles don’t care if you can rap if you don’t have some hardware on your shelf to back it up. Once you go platinum and get some hardware your entire career changes.

  5. @BALLIN sorry my dude but you’re REAL late haha

  6. @ColeWorldNoBlanket… i see your point to an extent and i do cosign skyzoo 100% but you gotta admit, the same quality of rap that was selling in the ’90′s isn’t selling now. I do believe album sales should be important to every artist, but at the same time a lot of artists don’t want to compromise their musical integrity to get sales a.k.a. make a radio hit with an R & B singer

  7. that’s why I hope kanye does a mill with Dark Fantasy… quality Hip Hop

  8. Moving on past the 90′s is what will keep this music evolving. Even though hip-hop is much different today, it will also be different tomorrow. There’s so much potential, as such a young genre with many many generations to come. No matter what is selling at the time, quality hip-hop will always be made, while the music that’s focused on record sales will only last as long as the money that’s behind it.

  9. & check out my new blog

  10. you guys need geeksquad to fix this shit

  11. Artists view success differently. Skyzoo is indie, but he’s not an abstract/fuck-anything-that’s-commercial kind of emcee, he’s one of the more commercially accessible emcees in the indie scene. TV and radio matter only if you can get on TV and radio. There a lot of indie emcees who measure success differently; they know they probably won’t get on TV or radio, so they carve out their own niche, tour extensively, release a lot of merch and stay comfortable in that lane. Going platinum nowadays, isn’t the same as going platinum 10-15 years ago. If Skyzoo was releasing music in the mid 90s, he’d have a better shot at a major label deal, and could probably release similar kind of music and maybe even go platinum, if not gold. Unfortunately, going platinum nowadays is a rarity. I give props to Skyzoo because he’s still maintaining his integrity and releasing the kind of music that he wants to release, and now he’s getting shine on TV and radio. I hope he can continue to do that and achieve more success without sacrificing much of what makes him a dope emcee.

  12. Co-Signature on that quote. Love 90′s hip hop, but f*** it there was great music from every decade. F*** Golden Era revivalists.

  13. ColeWorldNoBlanket < gotta disagree. people forget hiphop is MUSIC AND CULTURE FIRST THEN A PRODUCT..SECOND!!!!!!!!!! there are people who paint..they dont wanna b andywarhol, some people play b ball they dont wanna b mike..some people dance they dont wanna b michael jackson, some people play the piano they dont wanna be beethoven.

ALSO nas didnt wanna go back to 84' becasue people were rapping WAY BETTER THAN 84' skill wize, concept, flow, punchlines, connecting lines all had ADVANCED..obviously…something is not advancing TODAY.

  14. Werrddd < CO SIGN.

  15. gotta agree, ive been saying this.gotta be ground breaking and trend setting again. other genres of music are thriving in nyc, jus gotta get rid of the grumpy old heads, not doing anything but making us look sour about other regions

  16. whats the name of the song at the beginning?
