Johannes Mehserle, the BART officer who shot and killed Oscar Grant in January of 2009, was sentenced today to 2 years for Involuntary Manslaughter.
A conviction for involuntary manslaughter normally carries a four-year sentence, but the judge had the option of adding an “enhancement” that could have made the sentence 14 years because a firearm was used in commission of a crime.
Mehserle, who was on duty as a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer when the shooting occurred, said at the trial that he intended to draw and fire his Taser rather than his gun. The jury acquitted him of the more serious charges of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

Shake step up your Knowledge on Law and How courts work and all the jargon. once you do so you will see that he should have gotten more than 2 years but not life and no more than 25. Sad situation, all around. The cop most likely made a mistake, regardless of how you feel about it. It’s not the 1950s a cop isn’t going to shoot an unarmed man with intent to kill in broad day with hundreds of witnesses, on purpose. With that said, the punishment still doesn’t fit the crime, as his intent was to still tase an unarmed man who was not showing any signs of resisting arrest. He should’ve gotten a heavier sentence, around 5+ minimum. But what did you really expect? I don’t believe there has ever been any real precedent in one of these cases where a cop (white or black) has ever gotten a max sentence or a lengthy one. Cops in this situation will always have some type of reasonable doubt as far as their malicious intent, white or black cop.
