That wasn’t half bad. His acting is terrible though. Still not happy about not getting the HIP HOP album we expected but on a musical tip the album sounds sick. I can see his vision and where he wants to take his career in terms of making music for the world rather than to a specific audience so I’ve gotta give him props for following his heart and doing what he wanted to do. Hopefully the Watch the Throne album will give us that classic Hip Hop stuff we wanted considering it drops the same day as the album and the Pete Rock tracks ended up on that project.

I’m an artist and a producer and a DJ. I’m not a hater but I have to say that “Runaway” is not epic or spectacular or something new for that matter. Actually, I think this was a easy way for Kanye to let everyone hear his record before it comes out, a video music sampler similar to how they used to do promo CD samplers for DJs (maybe Def Jam didn’t want a sampler going out).On the movie spectrum, Lars Von Triers (AntiChrist) – Michael Haneke (Funny Games) – Tom Ford (A Single Man) – Steve McQueen (Hunger) – David Fincher (Social Network) – Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) – Richard Kelly (The Box) – Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut) Most recently Splice’s director Vincenzo Natali are directly sampled by Kanye to put the idea of the story together. Or maybe its Hype Williams chance to show everyone that he can get funding for Belly 2. But that’s a sidenote for another day, there is no story. The treatment probably had a bunch of ideas scratched on paper and from viewing the piece, it’s a bunch of scenes cut together with filters, fog, and bad acting. I find it amusing that he tries to use art references to his advantage in his pieces but plays it like his digging in his own mind to use them. I really think if Kanye were to focus and use his artistic skills properly without being so pretentious, he could become a memorable artist known for his creative virtues instead of his crass usage of art being thrown about in a Andy Warhol manner (which I can tell he’s reading up on), almost pointing a finger at those who don’t know as much as he supposedly does and then saying “I dropped out of college, but I still have someone staffed to look at Wikipedia to make sure my art ideas make sense. Some examples, he uses the Sword of Damocles in “Power” to reference his struggle as a person in power (Sword hanging over his head). In Runaway, the Phoenix is ironically used to reference his rebirth as a artist, the hooded garments that look like Ku Klux Klan garments displaying the Spanish Roman Catholic ritual called Capirote which is worn during Easter (rebirth), a supper of pure excess (thanksgiving). I enjoyed the music but I just wish that Kanye and the rest of these artists would take a step away mentally from their rod up the ass lifestyle and come back to reality. We all know that doesn’t sale though. I wish Kanye would produce for a while, just disappear and come back humble. He’s proven to every bully that he can do it. From his high school days to his early industry days, now if he would just focus on being the best and tighten himself up, he’d be respected. Just like Lady Gaga, they both are pawns to sale records. They may sale a lot of them but I’m sure they both sit in a room staring out at space wondering “is this what I really wanted.” But I’m just a dude that loves the music and popcorn with a movie. I’ll still be copping the instrumental album though, just kidding, I’ll cop the brothers cd.

I respect anybody willing to risk their popularity for their creativity. That’s really the only way to maintain an artist’s integrity. With that said, I’m proud of Kanye. He sat down, developed a story around emotion, and then used multiple mediums to express what he felt needed expression. The music is fresh and vivid, and the cinematography in this short film was impressive.
As far as I’m concerned, whether he’s genius or insane is irrelevant. He’s an artist. Critiques aren’t really necessary. However, respect and appreciation are always welcome. Thank you, Kanye. Respect.

How can you not call this masterpiece? Not only is it a beautiful visual representation of Kanye’s new album, but it’s also a symbolic representation of his career and of the the art/music world in general. People are saying its not great because the acting was bad and there was no plot… There wasn’t supposed to be a plot in the sense of what a normal movie would have or a script with actual acting, it was an artpiece in the vein of Daft Punks Electroma or Animal Collective’s ODDSAC, and a visual accompaniment to the music like Prince’s Purple Rain or Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It’s a throwback to the time when music videos were an event, instead of something you just release because the label wants you to. I don’t quiet understand why people are comparing this to actual movies that rely on a script and actual acting, like Memento, this isn’t supposed to be a movie in the normal sense.
