This actually was a real editorial Meka wrote. Lots of people comment on his writing style, but I like what he always post.
Back in the day, artists (rappers in particular) always had the mentality of being the “first”. Now, rappers try to do it “like” (insert any name). It’s cool if you find inspiration and influence from other artists, but it’s getting real wack when these next line of rappers try to emulate success from already successful artists, even when they say they’re “trying to create their own lane”. Even with Drake (no shots) he have people fooled, thinking he’s doing “something different” when he really isn’t; he takes bits and pieces from other established artists, which is why people compare him to Kanye/Wayne/Jay/Trey Songz…it’s because he takes what’s already been done (there were rappers before Drake that rap and sing) from the guys he’s friends with in the industry. Be your own man/woman, and be you; stop doing things “like” someone else and do what you feel is dope, hot, ill, etc.

Good point Mek Ive been saying this shit for awhile know Artist need to STOP BEING FOLLOWERS AND START BEING LEADERS!! All the dope artist of the past where influenced by there peers and elders they did not completely take there shit and run with it in the hope of some commercial success.

i don’t really think that’s the problem…i think the problem is too many new, mediocre artists getting cosigned by reputable media outlets, simply because they’re new…there’s no more selectivity when it comes to breaking in a new artist, everybody is out there with a mixtape, even if it sucks…

and just because you’re creative (Charles Hamilton) doesn’t mean that your music is good. Kool Keith was creative but most of his music sucks…
