Bun B x Trill OG = 5 Mics

You can now place Bun’s third album among such records as Illmatic, The Fix and The Blueprint

The upcoming issue of The Source reviews albums from a list of Hip-Hop heavy hitters who each has recently released a stunning well-crafted body of work that has shaped the year’s best albums creatively, lyrically and production-wise. “The Mindsquad of the new Source Magazine and Source.com recognized Bun B and his Rap-A-Lot label for an authentic Hip-Hop album from a respected artist that has paid his dues, perfected the art of story-telling in his music and contributed greatly to the streets and culture of the art form,” explains L.Londell McMillan publisher of The Source.

… The state of Hip-Hop music returns strong with these releases and The Source celebrates the return of Hip-Hop dominance. These artists have pushed the envelope, crafted chart topping music and are helping restore Hip-Hop’s dominance, with Bun B the leading the pack. Trill OG’s [5 mics] rating is something only a select few have received in the 22-year history of The Source.

Don’t forget, Lil Kim’s The Naked Truth was the last album to get this rating. Hopefully times at The Source are a little less corrupt now.

  1. are you kidding?

  2. SMH. Motherfuckers acting like The Source means anything nowadays. GTFO.

  3. *thud*

  4. lol – so this is the only labum to get it since lil kim?

  5. wtf haven’t bought this shit since 2001

  6. Check out Bun’s impression of that – surprised as we are !!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjAnmqecMKI

  7. it was a pretty good album

  8. wow…solid project but doesn’t sound like a 5 mic piece though, maybe it needs another spin shit idk…Illmatic? The Fix? Aquemini? Nah not up there…but I mean that bullshit Notorious K.I.M was given 5 mics so how much credibility does that mic system have after that anyway…solid album though

  9. IDK bout that…love Bun B tho but this album has 2many features to b considered a classic. jus look at Illmatic , Reasonable Doubt or The Fix they had few if any features!! The Source isnt creditable anymore to be rating Hip-Hop. Eminem pretty much killed their magazine!! #TrillOG

  10. Texas in this bitch give credit when it’s due bun b put together a fire ass album nuff said

  11. wow i thought his last album was waaaaaay better than this one… half of the songs ive heard from the album have been average at best… Now i could listen to “II Trill” from start to finish without skipping but not this new one

  12. No way this album is up there.

  13. Not that I don’t like Bun B or anything, I love a lot of the music he’s put out, just saying this album isn’t up there with illmatic.

  14. People still take The Source seriously? lol…

  15. WTF this CD Was His Weakest Iam Shocked !!!

  16. I love Bun’s music, but there are so many other albums I would put ahead of this one in the rating system.

  17. bun b heavily overrated by the south and easily overrated by the north east

personally i think hes garbage with a few bad but funny lines sprinkled in on hit songs hes featured

  18. Umm im not too sure… II Trill was definatly all round a much better, but Trill O.G. probably had his best songs on it – Let Em Know is incredible and It’s Been A Pleasure and SpeakEasy are other great songs!

  19. The album was tough. But as soon as I seen that Lil Kim’s “The Naked Truth” was the last album to get 5 stars they whole system was shot. So thanks but this shit obviously don’t even matter. Great album though.

  20. If this album gets 5 mics, Recovery should get 100.

  21. No one cares about The Source. Trill OG is a great album, but who cares what it got in this sham magazine. That either means that they were paid to give it 5 mics or that Bun’s manager is dating the editor.

  22. I’m glad for Bun B one of the most respected in the game. But something about this album
having 5 mics doesn’t sit right with me. I bought it I’ve listened to it. I can’t really put this album in the same class as an illmatic, Reasonable Doubt or Ready To Die.

    *kanyeshrug*

  23. Props to Bun B and all, but if “Distant Relatives” didn’t get 5 mics, then this don’t mean shit.

  24. This wasn’t even the best album of the last month (Pilot Talk & Sir Luscious leftfoot were both better)

  25. “NOW WHEN IT COME TO MAKIN’ MONEY IMA PRINT PRESS” acapella til the beat drop, REAL.

http://www.relevantmindset.net Finally, HipHop without the Bull$%^&.

  26. Hip hop and it’s constituency can’t get out of it’s own way… It’s needs a commissioner to put some of these fools on notice

  27. word.

dont free weezy and bring on the yeezy

  28. Anything with drake on it is not 5 mics.

  29. Eh. Congrats to Bun I guess. But we all know that the mics mean nothing now.

  30. not that it was a bad album, but i could offer many other albums since (LOL) the naked truth that deserve 5 mics more than this bun album… a recent and great example: OB4CLII… sides, i liked his first two albums better… altho i only listened to this one once so maybe im missin somethin… but i doubt it especially cuz of the too many and too shitty features… whatever… their credibility been shot…

  31. THE SOURCE IS IRRELEVANT..I HAVENT READ IT FOR YEARRRRRRSSSSSSS
(no diss to bun ) Buns album stands along regardless of a meaningless co sign from the source who has been bullshitting for yeaaaarss FUK THE SOURCE, FUK XXL …N YEAH.

  32. @ red, Your hip-hop pass has been revoked… The Source is meaningless, but Bun B is the truth. He’s respected by everyone from the most anti-commercial underground MC to the biggest superstars in hip-hop.

  33. LOL, at the nerds pissed cuz they thought eminem deserved it.

If anyone deserved it, The Roots did.

I’m not bitter like the rest of you clowns. Grow Up.

  34. The Source always has been a wack ass hip hop magazine. Ill never forget when they did that dumb shit. *smh* but oh well they gettin money I guess

  35. PS… i hada check the poll and LOL @ the current results:

    Artist – Album – (% Votes) – (# Votes)

Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left Foot: Son Of Chico Dusty – (12%) – (383)
    Bun B – Trill O.G. – (4%) – (134)
    Drake – Thank Me Later – (4%) – (136)
    Eminem – Recovery – (50%) – (1,622)
    Fat Joe – The Darkside: Vol. 1 – (1%) – (44)
    Rick Ross – Teflon Don – (7%) – (218)
    The Roots – How I Got Over – (22%) – (729)

PPS… for the record, the current top 3, i must agree:

    1- Eminem
    2- The Roots
    3- Big Boi

  36. Sir Lucious Leftfoot >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

if anything big boi shudve got it….

  37. Any album with a t-pain & guccie feature is not worth a perfect rating. period

  38. The Source is lame.

The album is solid. Like Mic’s would have been correct.

Sir Lucious Leftfoot is this years best album and definetly deserved 5 Mic if any album should have gotten it.

  39. So Big Boi’s album doesn’t deserve a perfect rating? Maybe you should listen to it first

  40. I think the album is horrible personally. The production especially. What really annoys me though…is Bun is a smart dude, but his music is so watered down that he doesn’t come off that way in his music. Subject matter is not varied at all either.

  41. Dear Bun,
I’m happy for your album…. And I’mma let you finish, but….

  42. I really like the album but wouldn’t givve it full marks. Up there with Illmatic and Aquemini? No chance.

    http://clintbeefman.wordpress.com/

  43. The album is fuckin dope but iono bout 5 stars. 4 would be a better rating.

  44. While I agree that Sir Lucious and Pilot Talk are dope albums Id have to say Pilot Talk isnt better than Trill OG…Sir Lucious is best album to drop this year. However if you go back and listen to Trill OG in this order it might be a true 5 mic album.

I added bonus cuts but as a cohesive body of work this tracklist would have been his best album and close to UGK classic status.

  45. BE fuckin honeest man… R U kidding me? I’m a Bun fan straight up… I’m a TX representative and I’ll be the first to say this album is complete trash! I’m sorry but it doesn’t even come close to any of his albums… It sounds rushed and has a lack of originality…. These magazines don’t mean dick anymore! No kind of reputable journalism. Just pushing commercial acts for the sake of selling issues and pushing units. II Trill was 10x better and I expected so much more from such a legendary artist. Only joint I felt on this album was the Premo Joint and possibly the tracks with Drizzy only because there was a different blend for Bun/Drizzy collabs… But as far as the whole album goes I give it a single mic for the single song that came hard…. after 20 years in the game he’s still recycling the same shit…. Don’t try to blow smoke up someone’s ass who has been an avid Hip-Hop fan since pocket full of stones… And literally bumped pocket full of stones when it was hot… Not some dumb fuck who just found out about it 5 years ago and claims to hold interest to a classic…. Give me a fuckin break… If you compare this to Aquemini or Illmatic or even Ridin’ Dirty you should jump off the top level floor of the source corporate office buildling…

  46. Oh and by the WAy the Roots album should have definitely got 5 mics!!!!!!….its just a good year for hip hop

  47. wtf im a big time bun b fan but this album = 5 mics NAH they trippin at the “formerly known as the source”

  48. and Roots album was 5 Mic even XXL worthy!!! NO DOUBT!!! STOP DICK RIDING THESE FUCKING ARTISTS! Have an individual opinion for Pac’s sake… lol

  49. lemme get it straight

I’m a UGK stan. Like. For real.
But this joint is FAR from Bun’s best work.
    Even II Trill was better.

Dont even get me started on the UGK albums.
This is just … a big WTF.

I’m happy for Bun and everything, he deserves the shine, but…
    WTF

  50. DCB said exactly what I felt when I heard the album… SMH the entire play through…. As I said I have all of UGK’s albums and this shit was so far below their quality music its tragic…. I hate to say this but looks like someone has lost their heart for the music more and more since the passing of the late great Chad Butler… R.I.P Sweet J Jones…

  51. @G

I feel your frustration, I been on UGK since 88. Not a newbe to this thang we call Hip Hop. However I have to disagree with you on the II Trill comment. I thought that album was trash!!!! Complete trash. But you cant compare Super Tight and Ridin Dirty to a Bun solo album. It not even possible. Thats why I said “close” to a UGK classic. Nothing without Pimp will ever reach Ridin Dirty or Super Tight…it just aint possible and thats from any artist. The same way a 3Stack or Big Boi solo will never reach Outkast classic status. However for Bun I beleive this is his best album based on that tracklist…there is aome great music on this album…and the flow is not recycled its refined. The subject matter is classic bun the way you want to here em and he’s droppin couplets and doubles in there that you dont catch on the first listen in every song. Just a complete work from him as a solo artist. Its a good look. Period.

  52. Hell. No. Big Boi most definitely deserves the 5mics, not this. Let Em Know bangs to fuck, but the album is mediocre as a whole.

  53. zany blunts <<< whered u get those stats from by the way/?????

  54. No disrespect to Bun B but no one is putting out a classic album these days. Second the Source dont mean shit. The only person close to a classic was Sha Stimulis My Soul to Keep

  55. @G Its not a dick ride thing at all just glad to see some quality music this year. I been stop listening to wask shit years ago…The last several years it been trash after more trash. Even the little wack shit is trying to be listenable. Oh and Distant Relatives definitely should have gotten more acclaim as well. Its one of the best this year also…That’s what Im sayin just good as music coming this year.

  56. HATERS GON HATE __YOUNG NIGGAZ DON`T GET BUN`S NEW ALBUM CUZ THEY HEAD IS STUCK ON BULL SHIT BUT IF IT WAS THEY FAVORITE RAPPER THEY WOULD BE LOVIN THAT SHIT.FUCK OUTTA HERE
BIG BUN BIDDA FINALLY GETTING HIS PROPS

  57. I’d say skyzoo’s album also was pretty close if not really good. What happen to that khalil track that was suppose to be on trill og?

  58. LAst comment and Im gone….II Trill???????? REally????????

II TRill. Just stop listening to music period!

    Just stop!

There is no way on any planet in the universe that II Trill is better than Trill OG….now the 5 mic issue is another story I agree its not 5 mics…but II Trill????? SMH!!!!!!

    Gone.

  59. @TRILL OG

    THANK YOU SIR.

  60. http://www.datpiff.com/Fig_Justlisten.m139209.html

  61. ok after all this fuss about who is and isn’t 5 mic worthy i decided to give the album another go round to say if it would sway my thoughts… Its not as horrible as i initially claimed but it still in no way moves me at all… Considering how long Bun has been in the game you’d expect artists to elevate in their work given their status… I can tell you the only tracks I will jam are: Chuuurch, Trillionaire (would be so much better w/out T-Pain), Put it Down, All a Dream, Its a Pleasure, and of course Let Em Know… The feeling I get from “Let Em Know” is 100% real hip-hop feel… Other than the tracks I listed the rest of the album isn’t even worth the MB of space they take up on my hard drive… And 5 decent tracks and 1 solid joint on a 18 song (20 tracks minus 2 interludes) is not quality from an artist so well respected and looked up to by so many in Hip-Hop

  62. And tho II TRill wasn’t the greatest, I’ll take the 8 or 9 joints that I jammed repetitively in the summer of 08 all with RESPECTIVE COLLABS before this fucking shame of artists such as GUCCI MANE & YO GOTTI were on everyone’s features as they are today! Tryin to slam II Trill when at least it had lupe, wayne, lyfe jennings, Eightball, MJG, David Banner, and Z-RO! And you tell me to stop listening to music??? REALLY FAM??? Mothafucka I been listening to southern rap since DJ Screw was selling Cassette Mixtapes out his trunk and the entire swisha house fam were making music together before major labels got a hold of em…. Think you can make sum sense of judgement call off one reference… GTFO… Aiight I’m done… Finally…

all tracks are dope, better than his last two albums, and “most” of the music that has come out commercially, underground, or mixtape this year. I said most not all.

  65. Before Swishahouse was mainstream? How about before Swishahouse was SwishaHouse…lol. When Keke first got on a screwtape when Fat Pat first got on them tapes. When 3-2 was the dude everyone wanted featured on their album, when Scarface was the new member of the Ghetto Boys. Your credibility has been denied mayne.

  66. ok I can dig on real live except the hook, but best is back and untitled flow aren’t in the folder I downloaded so i don’t even know about those joints but sorry fam, Snow money, lights camera action, ridin slow, and i git down for mine are just too weak production for me, aside from i just don’t dig the material in those tracks… We obviously got different tastes… And as far as “Right Now” goes… I don’t like artists trying to put 2pac verses in their albums, i think its a bad look considering it doesn’t sound like a track pac wouldve actually done himself…

  67. *blank stares at computer screen*
*Thinks about other albums this past decade that didn’t get 5 mics*
*Thinks about The Source’s credibility post-Benzino*
*Wonders if I should be laughing or mad at the fact Bun B got 5 mics*

  68. @G No disrespect, but your right about one thing, we just have different taste.

  69. aiight i’ma agree to disagree and I’m not comparing who knows more about south rap, its just sad to see so much credit given to album that just doesn’t show the credit where credit has been due… It only gives a pass for allowing lower quality music to continue in the mainstream and I don’t think it helps for these artists to challenge themselves anymore… But that’s just me, the music continues to lack more and more as time progresses and it takes away from when it was all just about the music….

  70. Why is Bun B a legend again? What has he done? Recite one Bun B verse other then the one on Big Pimpin…I’ll wait. Can you even name 10 Bun B songs? People are quick to crown somebody a damn legend. Nobody cares about a damn Bun B. As far as UGK, again another overrated group who only gets respect in the South. I can’t name 5 songs from their catalog. Please, Stop it

  71. Lmfaoooo. Fuck The Source! Holy shit.
Eminem’s Recovery is by far the best album of this year so far. Best album in general and best R&B/hip hop album of this year.
They should’ve given that motherfucker a 5 mic rating but these motherfucking critics at The Source don’t know how to fucking rate albums…Fucking Trill O.G. It ain’t a bad album but 5 mics for this shit? Seriously? Fuck no
If anyone deserved it for this year, it should be Eminem, Drake, & Big Boi. Period.

  72. My $0.02:

I honestly can’t stop laughing at this. You know, this really made me think of a conversation I had with a friend about 4 years ago. We were talking about who was going to come out with the next album to be heralded 5 mics. My response? “It will be a rapper from the South”. Now it seems like my prediction was true. The problem I have with Trill OG being 5 mics isn’t the fact that Bun B isn’t dope or this was a terrible album…it just seems more like a giveaway. This was by no mistake a giveaway to give a Southern rapper 5 mics. No disrespect to the South. I also realize that albums that were given 5 mics was to artists who basically had the game on lock with their sound and feel to their classics (i.e. Illmatic, The Chronic, Aquemini, The Low End Theory); so my question is this: Is Bun B’s “Trill OG” the basic sum of the overall sound of Hip Hop today? Was this a “giveaway” classic, just because the South dictate the dominant sound in Hip Hop today? Maybe it’s the former, maybe it’s the latter. I’m not upset at Bun B getting 5 mics, for this actually piqued my interest further into listening to his album…I just have issues with magazines like the Source who lost credibility by not giving fair and balanced reviews. I mean, sh**, How I Got Over is Things Fall Apart 2.0 for me.

Anyways, although I am amused by this, I really do congratulate Bun B for the critical acclaim, since he’s a vet that deserves it. At least we can say that it wasn’t a Soulja-Waka-Gucci-Juiceman rapper that got 5 mics, because when we see that day, pigs will fly with Vote For Bush Back In Office t-shirts on.

  73. Hey Im just excited to see some real opinions and intelligent commentary about solid music…a few months ago the only thing worth looking at in these comments was bullshit and lil wayne GOAT..etc…lol.

    OK, Im done…I promise.

  74. HIGO, Educated Hip-Hop for educated heads. Em is cool, if you’re 16 in the Mid West. This Bun B character, kiddie-pop-Hip-Hop. Stand tall HIGO.

  75. Yall heard of that boy Clemm Rishad?? Check em out on ITunes; Close Your Eyes and SEE

  76. Drake T pain classic..thats funny shit. those two names and classic is an oxymoron

  77. When XXL gives it a rating then I will give a fuck, but until then, fuck The Source.

  78. XXL gave it an XL, which i thought was pretty fair.
It was a dope album, but definently not a classic.

  79. WTF??

  80. I think there way of giving him some Pimp C sympathy!!! it decent album but i hv not found myself wanting to listen to it in entirety since listening the 1st time, thats what i consider a classic, wanting a full repeat listening. Trill OG did not giv me that. like i said i think he getting alot of Pimp C sympathy, this will hurt/discredit him more than help

  81. wow the source trippin. smh.
those albums dont even belong in the same sentence.

  82. 36 chambers is NOT EVEN THAT COLD FUCK NY HATERS YA NIGGAZ IS BUILT 2 HATE EVEYBODY
I SAID IT 36 CHAMBERS AINT EVEN THAT FUCKIN COLD GETTEM BUN
ITS A GROWN FOLK ALBUM ALL KIDS FUCKIN DIE

  84. Congrats Bun .. Next Waka Flocka Will Get 5 Mics (No Offense To Bun … Sorta)

  85. I think of all the comment before mine, the shit ain’t no 5 mic album.the nigga that rated must have just got his job,or this was the first rap cd he had summer job money to buy?

  86. I can honestly say that I still slap most of, if not all, the albums that have been given 5 mics like they came out yesterday (except for that lil’ kim shit of course lol)…and I really don’t think I will be slappin this Bun B shit not even a month from now…hell, I gave it a spin once and havn’t had that urge to go back to it like most dope albums give me…with other, way more solid projects that have dropped this year like the roots and big boi, like everyone else has said this one is indeed a head scratcher

  87. sha stimuli, homeboy sandman, pack FM, necro, vinnie paz, the roots, big boi, nas and damian marley, murs and 9th wonder, reflection eternal, artofficial, meth ghost and rae, diabolic, all put out better shit than bun b, and how is trill o.g. a grown folk album? with features from drake, gucci, jeezy and production from boi 1da (produced for drake, 50 cent, rick ross), justice league (produced for juelz santana, plies, lil wayne) and drumma boy (produced for the most childish artists i ever heard and the list is endless) i’ve heard a handful of tracks from trill o.g. and most of the tracks i’ve heard show no form of real appreciation of music, no form of originality and even the titles of the tracks look pathetic, the titles of the tracks dont look like ‘grown folk’ material, they look like tracklists you’d expect to find on an album popular only with 14 year old kids for example ‘countin money’, ‘put it down’, ‘just like dat’ they all sound like song titles of shitty pop/rap hits that any fan of real hiphop would hate even hearing a short clip of on the tv or radio and for an album like that to be compared to nas, scarface or jay-z is an insult personally as a fan of real hip-hop, fuck the source, fuck mtv and fuck any other form of mainstream media that promotes untalented and un-original rap music, i’ve even started to get sick of eminem from hearing him being played so much and talked about so much here in the UK by people who havent even heard of rakim, krs-one, gang starr, that’s something i despise in hiphop

You’re an idiot. Bun B is a mother fucking legend without him an Pimp you’d have a lot less artist doing what they do. Anyways who cares what you think? You listen to only mainstream shit and go with the following of other people.

Dude while the album isn’t as good as II Trill or any UGK albums. Why wouldn’t they have giving II Trill 5 mics? That album came in 08 not long after the passing of Pimp. Even UGK 4 Life wasn’t awarded 5 mics. It’s not for sympathy.

UGK 4 Life though R.I.P. Pimp.

  89. i’m not hating bun b, he’s a better rapper than i’ll ever be and i’m just a fan of hip-hop, not an actual artist, but if i was to be a hip-hop artists i have ideas 100 times as dope as his entire range of work throughout his career, he’s a good hip-hop artist but is not and will not ever be (in my eyes) anything special in hiphop, i really dont see anyone looking back throughout hiphop in 20 years, hell even 5-10 years from now, and saying ‘wow remember bun b? his albums were classic’

and to the ‘em is GOAT drake is awesome too’ guy i honestly dont think many people will mention bun b or pimp c for that matter as influential artists to them, no one talented anyway, i honestly dont know what features of bun b or pimp c’s music can be inspiring to any hip-hop artist, feel free to correct me if i’m wrong but to me i honestly dont think they are/were anything special, but rest in peace pimp c

  90. @ MekasMomma… if you go to the source’s website, they have a poll about which album deserves 5 mics outta all those n after you vote they give you the stats…….

  91. yo, heres the link: http://www.thesource.com/articles/22918/Who-Deserves-The-Precious-%275-Mics%3F%27/

  92. Any album with a t-pain & gucci feature is not worth a perfect rating. period
    ^
    yeeeeeeeep

  93. none of those albums are 5mic worthy…but then again the source aint shit either soooo….

  94. @ zany blunts:

LOL @ Bun B getting 4% votes and Eminem getting 50% votes!!! I voted for The Roots “How I Got Over”. It goes to show The Source’s credibility to covet 5 mic albums.

  95. Bad move, The Source.

Only one album this year could actually scratch the 5 mic surface

Sir Luscious and I’m having trouble deciding whether it could even compete with Aquemini or Illmatic. Probably not, and lots of people realize that.

  96. In response to David, Bun B is one of the best MC’s from the South, which unfortunately doesn’t mean anything anymore, but he is a solid lyricist. I mean, UGK to some is just as inspirational to some as OutKast and Scarface (In terms of Southern Rap). In terms of back in the day of Southern Rap’s Golden Age, he’s pretty damn good.

Now about “Trill OG”. This album is decent, but nowhere even deserving of 5 Mics. There are so many albums the previous decade that should have got 5 mics (Game Theory was amazing). The Source has lost credibility ever since ‘The Naked Truth’ got 5 mics. UGK should’ve got 5 mics for Ridin Dirty, if any of their albums deserved 5 mics. The last 5 Mic album to have any credibility was The Fix. This isn’t even a top 5 Southern Rap Album. ATLiens, Soul Food, and a few others are way better than this. This ain’t even a top 3 albums this year. Big Boi, if anyone from the South, shoulda got it. The Roots could have, too. They are long due for one. Distant Relatives, and even Drake’s album should have got some consideration before Buns. (Note, I don’t like Drake nearly as much as I do Bun). Eminems could have gotten some consideration, too, of course,( but to me, it isn’t nearly as good as his first two, either should have got 5 mics.)

But to be honest, there’s only been around less than 10 albums, if that, that even TRUTHFULLY deserved consideration for 5 mics since this century started. The way hip-hop music is made nowadays, the mainstream approach that it takes, the lack of originality as a whole, etc., it’s really difficult for any album to earn any true consideration for 5 mics. The Source has no credibility anyways….

  97. Well, not like it used to… (The Source)

  98. y didnt the source until the year finished to judge wat album is a 5 star like kanyes new shit, j.cole, lupe’s (whenever atlantic releases it) or other 2010 releases. the source is fuckin up

  99. This album is definitely 5 Mic material. Why so?

*Its originality is superior and it has everything you can ask for in a true Hip Hop album. Hes always been a great story teller. The creativity is great and it entertains in so many ways, from gangsta rap, money talk, real MC tracks like the Premo joint, club bangers, drug raps and even a classic Texas Slab joint, Bun B Does it all.

*Bun’s flow, clever word play and lyricism are at the highest peak in his entire career. Think about it, the style of his flows are so versatile he has a different rhythm in damn near every track. There’s not one bad verse in this entire album.

*His Lyricism is better and harder than ever, the complexity of his rhymes are at an all time high. Some incredible examples: Trillionaire, Snow money, Let ‘em know, Just Like That and Gladiator come to mind immediately.

*The production is perfect. Most rap albums are full of unoriginal production with nothing but samples and stolen beats. There is not ONE sampled beat in this entire album, all the music is original production that each producer has personally composed.

Bun B has now proven that he is a legend, hes withstood the test of time and lasted longer than most of these other rappers. He earned his respect in the game. He keeps it real and spits nothing but the truth. He doesnt care about soundscans, hes doing it for hip hop and the entire south. This album deserves a 5 mic rating.
Sure its not on the same level as other 5 mic classics such as iLLmatic, 36 Chambers, All Eyez On Me, The Blueprint, Doggystyle, The Chronic, Ready To Die or even the Fix. But look at what hip hop music is today. This album stands out above most of todays rap. Bun B deserves it.

  100. Bun put out a great album, but it’s not 5 mic material at all. It’s the same album he always makes, which is fine because he’s a great rapper and extremely entertaining, but this isn’t anything we haven’t heard before.

Big Boi’s album should have gotten 5 Mics. That album is so far above every album this year in terms of originality, lyricism/wordplay, and just all around rapping. Sir Lucious Leftfoot is probably the best album I’ve heard since Late Registration.

  101. Clearly not 5 mics. 3 and a half if i’m baked writing the review.

Source is fuckin retarded. Eminem shut them down 8 years ago.

  102. “i’m not hating bun b, he’s a better rapper than i’ll ever be and i’m just a fan of hip-hop, not an actual artist, but if i was to be a hip-hop artists i have ideas 100 times as dope as his entire range of work throughout his career”

    ^^^^
please list a few ideas you have (i’m a rapper and you saying you have ideas better than Bun B amazes me and i’m giving you the benefit of the doubt by asking you to prove yourself ‘cus that is an insane statement…)

also, “having ideas” and actually doing are two totally different things. i have a theory for global domination. what are the chances of me accomplishing that successfully?! if you’re not a rapper, don’t say you can do better than one. nuff said.

  103. first of all let me make this clear once and for all. i haved lived in nyc and texas my entire life. the hip hop music differs in many ways but it is still hip hop music. those who are on here comparing southern rappers to east coast rappers dont seem to understand that its deeper than it seems on the surface. if these reflection eternal, artofficial, 17th Soul guys are so much better than Bun than why are they not known across the nation like Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent? I bet i could drop an album easily with a dictionary/thesaurus next to me and make an album with nice production and sound smart and super lyrical too. UGK is gangsta shit, feel me? Not hard to understand but man the beats are super tight. Is it 1 mic 3 mics or 5 mics? I dont care but I know its a nice album. Ridin’ Slow has one of the nicest beats i heard in a while. And people are saying who has to many other guest on the album but i think Bun outshines all of them…

  104. east coast rap=dictionary rap

  105. some southern rap=elementary school rap

  106. east coast rap < southern rap

  107. The Source is not the end all be all for hip hop. The 5 mic rating doesn’t mean YOU have to think its a classic. It just means the reviewer(s) think(s) its a classic. There are albums I consider classics that people have probably never even heard of (Shell Shocked by Mac is one example). If you were to hear them you would probably disagree and frankly I don’t give a fuck. I’m going to continue to jam the shit anyway. If you don’t think Bun’s album is a classic that’s fine but don’t shit on him to prove your point. Bun is one of the better MC’s to ever spit. That can’t be denied. If you don’t believe me, reference Bun’s verse on the song called “Murda” on UGK’s Ridin’ Dirty album. Basically what I’m saying is jam what you jam. If other people like an album you think is bad, its no big deal. Difference in tastes. And before I go, I would like to make a comment that I’m sure many of you will not understand that if you did understand, it would probably bridge the gap between East Coast Rap and Southern Rap. And that is… JUST BECAUSE YOU KNOW HOW RAP (AND BY THAT I MEAN SPIT TIGHT LYRICS) DOESN’T MEAN YOU KNCW TO MAKE A GOOD SONG OR A GOOD ALBUM FOR THAT MATTER!!! Think about what I just said. Congrats to Bun B!!! R.I.P. Pimp C!!!

Wow!!! You obviously don’t know hip hop. I could name SEVERAL!!! Albums: UGK: Too Hard To Swallow(1992), Super Tight(1994), Ridin Dirty(1996), Dirty Money(2001), Side Hustles(2002), Underground Kings(2007), and UGK 4 Life(2009). Not including Pimp C’s and Bun’s solo projects. Plus their Greatest Hits album. BTW ALL of which I OWN (NOT DOWNLOADED BUT OWN!!!) As far as song I’ll give you a few cuz if I named all of them I would be here all night. Songs: Ain’t That A Bitch, Stoned Junkie, Ridin Dirty, One Day, Tell Me Something Good, Int’l Player’s Anthem, Meal Ticket (I’m Bout It Soundtrack), Akickdoe (C-Murders Life or Death Album), Break Em’ Off Something (Master P’s Ice Cream Man), Pocket Full of Stones (Menace II Society Soundtrack), Pinky Ring, Short Texas, Front Back & Side to Side, I Left It Wet For You, Its Supposed to Bubble, Protect & Serve, Sippin On Syrup (Three 6 Mafia), PA Nigga, Holdin Na, Let Me See It, Choppin Blades, Corruptor’s Execution (The Corruptor Soundtrack),I could go on and on but ARE YOU SERIOUS??? WHAT HAS BUN B DONE TO TO BE A LEGEND??? What has he done since BEFORE 1992??? And its what… 2010??? And all of that is just scratching the surface. Ask your favorite rapper about Bun and see what kind of respect they give him. Hell, Bun probably graced his album with a feature (Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, E-40, Too $hort, Jay Z, and Beanie Seigel to name a few). WHAT HAS BUN DONE??? NOT A DAMN THANG BUT KEEP IT TRILL!!!

  109. Alot of people talk about what is and isn’t REAL hip hop. Some people feel that if the beat isn’t a combination of your typical east coast kck drum and snare break beat over a repetitive melody, and throw in a “son” and a “nah mean” that it aint hip hop. That just isn’t the case. Hip hop is more than that. Its more than east coast break beats, southern bass heavy music (most of which is intended for club and dance purposes only and aren’t intended to be lyrical but mother fuckers are too stupid to figure that out), and west coast funk. Hip hop is the ONLY genre of music I know that can take elements of other genres and incorporate them into their own songs. Being able to do this means that hip hop has, can, and will always take on many different forms. EMBRACE THAT!!! Take a song for what its worth and what it was intended for. Not every song is made to be lyrical and make you think. Some are made to make you dance, some are made to make you laugh. Some are made to tell a story. People down south get this (for the most part) and alot of other regions don’t. But southerners are the stupid ones??? Whatever. However as a disclaimer… There really isn’t anything I can say to defend Soulja Boy. Thats just terrible. I like it all. East or west or down south I don’t care. If it jamz I am all for it!!!

  110. how come this got 5 mics and “Be” from common didn’t…..

  111. The South is still holdin. Trill niggaz don’t die, R.I.P. Pimp C.

  112. Talkin bout who deserves 5 mics, who deserves 2?
When the nigga that got 2 still could serve you.
