The Roots – The Fire f. John Legend (Video)

I wonder if they’re gonna do visuals for the cut with Blu eventually. Anyways, here’s the latest, Rik Cordero-helmed set of visuals off The Roots’ How I Got Over, now available. Props to shamz.

  2. I didn’t understand it and im a history major lol. Here’s what they say about the visuals, btw: “The Fire” chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe. After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group — led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore — forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor…and food. The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival. – Rik

  3. Yeah, the video didn’t really come full circle for that “ohhhhhh, that’s what it’s about!” moment. Still, its The Roots, so I’m in. Lol.

  8. even with that explanation I am still confused! I guess it all makes sense but then again its the roots they dont ever really make sense and thats why they are who they are…

  9. One of my favorites from the album.

  10. Song is tight. Too bad that video ain’t have shit to do with it. *shrugs*

  12. rik is a pretty good producer, but not the best director.
    still, this was good.

  13. he had what the box was supposed have all along… THE FIRE!

  14. A music video that has an actual message. Makes a change from the constant stream of club videos we usually get.

  17. great song. the video was quite a let down, it barely related to the lyrics and it was hard to tell what was going on.

  18. song/video is great.

  19. Cordero tried to show how humanity persists despite the odds. It was easy to want to kill but they resisted and persisted on. Not just to be alive, which is critical, but to be better. It was poorly executed. As one mentioned above the white box was a metaphor. The key to survival isn’t going to come from material object, but it’s inside of each and every one of us. It’s the decisions we make, how we act.

  20. the box they received at the at the end was the key to the survival but other than that im lost but i still love this video it’s inspiring for some odd reason!!

  23. huge fan of the song, not a fan of the video.

  24. I think people watch the video one time and said “fuck it, I cant figure it out” instead of analyzing and thinking about what it really means which is what Im sure the Roots as well as Rik Cordero wanted you to do. Big Roots fan, the video isnt the best but its thought provoking which already makes it better than almost all other videos out now

  25. Great song. ehhh video. has nothing to do with anything. The Dear God 2.0 video was amazing. this….not so much.

  26. It’s based on a Stephen King novel called The Long Walk. Read muthafukaz.

  27. whats in da fukin box a la se7en
