Among other things, Cole talks about the lack of features on his forthcoming debut album. That plan sounds kinda Illmatic-esque… anyways, you can catch the entire segment with J. Cole on the episode of “Hip Hop Shop,” on FUSE tomorrow night.

Toray annoys the shit outta me
I’m glad this was short, I havnt been able to get through any of the other interviews that Toure has done.
Interested to see how this album is going to sound
The warm up was so dope and apparently that was just a sound bite…hah
Illmatic-esque hahahahahahaha. Meka’s gonna get the kiddies excited.
Nasty Nas 1991 Demo tape will shit on J.Cole’s entire calculated career.
What’s wrong with Toure’s interviews?
Toure is fucking annoying
All I know is this album is gonna be great.
Mad respect for J Cole for not going the cliche sh*tload of features route on his album.
Glad to know he aint rick rossen it
J. COLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im Not Tryna Start Nothin But Its Funny How He Says Not Having Every Hottest Name In The Game On Your Albums
Thats Pretty Much Both Rick Ross & Drake’s Albums
Lookin Forward To His Album Tho .
@Mikee $tar I was thinkin the same thing. More so directed at Drake in my opinion..
he was just setting it up so no one can say he bandwagons when penny becomes a heat. hahahaha
I really don’t understand what’s wrong with features??? Since when is there a golden rule dictating the amount of features on an album? I thought the features worked well on both Ricky and Drakes albums. Also, enough with the Nas comparisons… there are plenty of other artists who didn’t have many features on their debut albums, why the fuck is this “illmatic-esque”??? He isn’t even remotely like Nas. He doesn’t preach and he picks good picks, he’s the complete opposite of Nas.
whens the album comin out
toure interview was cool he is like least annoying interviewer he was laid back wit it J coles album is gonna be classic who the hell dissed canibus he one of the dopest lyricist
Yawn.
Q. When’s Str8 Killa comin out?
A. August 3 you sleepin ass suckas.
jcole is the fucking man fucka drake!
Illmatic did have featurs on their with Pete Rock, Q-Tip and AZ
Tevin speaks the truth.
Its bullshit speaking about too many features like thats inherently bad.
On some level all the best music is made through collaboration.
nas may preach now, but are the beats rly that bad.. Patience is btr then anything ive heard in many years.. and this kid will j cole will never be on nas’ level of lyracism.
Kids, please. Pete Rock & Q Tip did the chorus on tracks they produced on the album. AZ was the only featured MC with a verse…and who the fuck knew who AZ was then? (Doe or Die is mad slept on to this day). Illmatic was an album that came out of virtually nowhere with no expectation when hip hop had little shine or credibility in the grand scheme of music. Sorry, J.Cole couldn’t even carry Nas weed and the comparisons are laughable. Co-sign runner up above.
You’re right, they don’t compare.
The Warm Up > anything Nas has done since God’s Son.
*inb4 NYC.
fijgnfkdo…Nas demo tape was magic the blueprint for up&comers, Serch sounds dope on it too loll.
I don’t think it was a stab a Drake more like “everyone has a song with someone famous, thru the entire album..” homie Cole has so much shit to say, even his mixtapes don’t have anyone on it and he still has more to say…whole songs worth..its “Ill-matic” lmao..osdfin-wordup
The whole issue about features is a grey area. It really depends on the artist. One could argue that having to many features overshadows the artist talent and in some cases is overbearing. But at the same time, you could also have an artist who has an ear for music have features on songs because it betters the quality of the music. No person can argue whether too many features is bad or good because there are too many variables that you have to account for in making that statement. In J. Cole’s perspective, i think he feels the need to limit the features on his album so people can guage the magnitude of his talent. This also allows him entirely to take his music in the direction he wants so we can see his vision in the way he wanted us too. The fact that he’s a rookie in the industry only propels this idea and makes him stand out from the other upandcomers’.
I think J.Cole is a beast and I can’t wait for the album. He is a solid producer too. As for the Nas comparisons, I’ll keep quiet on that. Come out with a great album first.
NaS can’t be the best lyrist but concepts on tracks are great and @Polytetrafluoroethylene Dominus thanks for the shout out
Wow @ any comparisions between Nas & J.Cole.
Comparing a industry pushed kid who has a mixtape or two with the one of the most prolific respected MCs in the history of the game?
This world is filled with fools. Kids, stay in school.
Lupe’s debut, Food & Liquor, only had one featured MC on a verse (also Jay-Z). But im not sure thats an easier comparison for Cole b/c Food & Liquor is also considered a classic by many and Lupe is probably in top 5, if not the best, lyricists in the game right now.
No one should compare anybody with any body anymore because of the mass confusions on labeling artists for what they say or what beat it sounds mostly like. They can only be inspired and thats’ what J. Cole is, a guy that stays in his lane of HIP-HOP and another thing about him is that he follows his on trend of not being flashy because he’ll tell that in his music [check out Water Break Interlude]. so fuck comparing him with artist he’s J.Cole as Drake is Drake and NaS is NaS. and whoever disagrees fuck u and rick ross [aka] everybody he is not
but Lupe had features keyword features on his album @ aHometownHerp
J. cole >
paging NYC/BROOKLYN with A.Hole comments…
good luck on those hooks cause if theres one thing ive learnt about cole from his mixtapes is that the nigga sucks at singing he aint no drake
he doesnt sing on records wtf are u talking about
@G-unit october 26 @till idk what youre talking about cuz J. cole is decent [lights please, little ghetto nigga, Get away, knock on wood] and he isnt that much of a singer he like harmonizes
I got my tuna fish sandwich with the tiny bits of onions and celery, splashing them down with some lemonade sprinkled with cinnamon powder. got the ceiling fan above me waving the kool breeze like them Coney Island nights. and look who I see…. fake ass Mario Peebles (Toure) and A. Hole kicking around the Q & A. not much to say about this interview right here, but I know the A. Hole wet dream fans are drooling all over the keyboard. I didn’t expect Mario Peebles to come up like Chris Matthews and play Hardball, but them questions were soft porn for the ears. I remember when I was about 10 yrs old, back when the BMX craze was hittin’ niggaz in the hood. me and boyz built a wooden ramp which took us four days to built. I remember we didn’t have no hammers and no fuckin’ nails. we thought about trying to cut down one of the city trees to get the wood to built the ramp, but one of my boyz father threw away one of the cabinet B&W TV joints. for you young kats, this was those TVs that came boxed up in brick type wood, you spoiled niggaz today complain about 720 vs 1080p vs 3D. well, we stripped the TV from the wood cabinet and we went out and ask the neighbors for a hammer and some nails. old man Lucas came through, he was like the Bookman of our project building. I remember the hammer looking like the hammer that was used in Blacula. he gave us these silver toothpick nails, we used up like 700 nails to build the ramp. we even placed two small flags at the end of the ramp to make the flags wave when we jumped off the ramp. remember, it took us four fuckin’ dayz and I’m the only one with the BMX bike. one of my friends who was 10 years old, still was riding his big wheel since he was seven, my other friend had a 10 speed bike with no brakes his uncle left behind when he went to Rikers and shit. we placed the ramp on the pavement, and we was ready for some action. my nigga with the big wheel FAILED, the 10 speed jump off the ramp but it didn’t go high enough in the air and my nigga 10 speed flipped the fuck over when he landed. I was ready, I took the BMX bike and did a test run, but didn’t attempt to jump. I figure let me go around the block and speed my bike up so I can make Brooklyn proud of me when I hit the ramp. whatta you know? going around the block, some LO-LIFE nigga knocks me over and takes my fuckin’ BMX. I got niggaz waiting for me on the other side, and now they see me BMX-less on foot. the morale of the story is, it took us four fuckin’ days to FAIL, we had everything, the material and tools. same shit A. Hole has now, and I see the same shit happening to him. A. HOLE YOU WILL FAIL!
^tl;dr.
Dude hasn’t even dropped his album yet and you’re saying he won’t hold a candle to Nas? GDFO, didn’t know there’s a time machine out there.
Respect for not going the route of Drake and loading up with features. Not dissing Drizzy, because it worked for him, but I think this is right for J.
http://clintbeefman.wordpress.com
NYC/BROOKLYN its clear ur just bein silly and want attention now. nobody gonna read that shit, i started to but i stop at the 3rd line cuz it was stupid
The thing about features is that it really shouldn’t matter when it comes to later albums like 2nd, 3rd, and etc. but when it comes to your debut album to the masses, I feel as though there shouldn’t be that many features if not none because the debut should showcase you, what you’re about (at the moment), and if you can stand on your own two. With Nas’ Illmatic and Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor, both of those albums had only 1 feature (AZ for Nas and Jay-Z for Lupe). With the guest list reduced to 1, this allowed them to showcase their lyrical ability, style, and finesse among various beats, which set them up to be revered as top tier lyricists to the masses with no distractions. Even though some may know J.Cole from the mixtapes, his debut album is still his relieving to the world on a grander level and he wants to do the same. In the case of Drake, I think that since so many felt So Far Gone as his “debut”, he might have felt that he already proved himself as a rapper and just wanted to work with other artists.
relieving = revealing
Fuck outta here with these Nas/J.Cole comparisons. There will NEVER be another Nas.
Hip Hop is Dead > your favorite album
J.Cole is fucking garbage, the guys is a subpar southern rapper with limited talent. Dude is nice but stop making him out to be some non-Messiah he is just another rapper with decent push. Fuck outta here, no more legends like Marley, Zepplin, or Sinatra.
PS. SHAKE YOU FUCKING FAGGET post some real shit like this, and stop posting garbage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5f8C4it8sA&feature=player_embedded#!
what is NYC/BROOKLYN smoking lol. I agree cole shouldn’t be compared to nas. cole will never make an impact in hip hop the way nas has. cole is kind of corny but he will get by because of jay-z.
UnxpektedDeath “J.Cole is fucking garbage, the guys is a subpar southern rapper with limited talent. Dude is nice but…”
DOES NOT COMPUTE
this interviewer is afaggot
@UnxpektedDeath
You can’t call someone a “FUCKING FAGGET” and expect them to post what you deem “real shit”. Common sense my nigga…
And that NYC/BROOKLYN story was funny as hell, but I don’t agree with it
cool, thats what i really like to hear… cuz i listen to an artist to listen to them, not a billion other people… a collab could be awesome, and its excitin to hear about, but its rare today for it to come out good cuzza all the non-studio sharin email shit they do today in order to collab… it doesnt usually have a cohesive sound cuz they didnt vibe together to make it, nah meen…
“I remember when I was about 10 yrs old, back when the BMX craze was hittin’ niggaz in the hood. me and boyz built a wooden ramp which took us four days to built. I remember we didn’t have no hammers and no fuckin’ nails.” – NYC/BROOKLYN
