You don’t necessarily need an irrational allegiance to a certain team or whatever to have some kind of rooting interest in the game. I’m a Blazers fan (being from Portland) & I think that “civic” pride is an honorable thing but I’m still interested in basketball even when my team’s out of the picture but that’s just me.

I’m from the Middle East and I’ve been a fan of the Lakers since I was born, my dad, my older brother, and my uncles are all Laker fans. For me it’s not an LA thing, it’s a Lakers thing, a team thing. I would stay up till 3 or 4 am to watch the Lakers play every time.
