Will Drake’s Thank Me Later Sell A Million? (Video)

Folks at MTV speak their mind on what Drake’s debut album will sell in the first week. Bun B thinks 500k and I’ve gotta say a little less. Regardless, I’m with Joe Caramanica in that first week’s sales don’t matter. I hate how that has become the bar in which someone fails or succeeds. What about your second week’s numbers? Third? Tenth? Those are what really matter in my opinion. Also, after the jump Nicki Minaj speaks about the possibility of having 50 Cent on her upcoming album weed plate. *shrugs.

  1. http://www.slate.com/id/2256623/pagenum/all/

On his debut album, Drake raps about how alienated he feels when he drives luxury cars and sleeps with models….a first album is a strange place to run out of ideas.

  2. the second guy that talks in first video need to DIE TODAY damn!!! somebody shot him already

  3. He’s selling 1 Milli I’m sure of it.

  4. Illmatic didn’t go platinum until 7 years after it released, that definitely means something.

  5. I bet there are at least 200K effeminate & confused Hip Hop/R&B fans that will buy this.

  6. yea itz a possibility n if he does i ain’t mad at him. i don’t bump dis cat regularly but it’ll b good fo’da industry if he sells big numbers

  7. Whether it sells 50k, 500k, or 1000k, it’s still a bad sounding album.

  8. Well, first off, “Thank Me Later”, is a great album. Hands down it has the potential to sell (first week) 350K-600K. That’s just my opinion. But, you don’t have many ppl buying albums too, but only just downloading them, which at times doesn’t matter. But, if they aren’t feeling this album like others. THAT is what’s gonna bring the sales lower than what is expected, imo.

Besides his pussy comment about Lil Kim I was all aboard the Drake bandwagon, seriously. But, to show that much disrespect towards someone for one is a FEMALE MC, and a VETERAN at that. Shows he think he can say all of what HE wants and he’s STILL A NOBODY! A mixtape ain’t shit, whether it’s one of the greatest ones, if you have no ALBUM to back you up then what’s the use of talking about YOU, smh. Again that’s just me.

  9. He’s Not Doing A Million!

  10. 500k and Over, people aren’t factoring in the girl factor.

  11. FUUUUUUUUCK that second dude made me wanna kill my neighbors! sorry drake but this is your first album bro, maybe next round .

  12. Fuck no! people will save for eminem’s album!

  13. @ TC

that shouldn’t tell people a damn thing, it’s 2010 nigga wtf?

  14. 500k first week a milli by 3rd. next album i heard he’s goin in tht comeback season direction..hope so

  15. yes and no. but i mean i like to wait til mornin to shampoo my carpets cuz my roomies cat likes to shit every where when the lights flicker to the sound of death. wooohooo ok

  16. it might. alotta people like real cliche simple stuff, and this weed plate has alot of that. Nicki’s album will be alot better than this, and like martin said people who want meaning will buy eminem before this

  17. yeah it will. theres over 1 billion faggot ass niggas breathing. that nigga gotta crack at least 1 mil easy. wheres max b?

  18. You see, what people are forgetting is, eventually they actually have to listen to the CD. It’s ok.

This is NOT Illmatic…it’s not even Adventures of Bobby Ray. Drake needs to stop comparing himself to classic acts. His stuff WILL sell, but not at all for the right reasons. I’m guessing 150k first week.

Lemme just ask…why is Drake so popular? I’m not hating, I’m seriously curious. He’s not really unique. People say he’s a positive voice of normal people, but I don’t see how that is. Nothing about his story is easy to relate to. He was an actor and then started rapping. I dunno…

  19. are there still a million people who havent downloaded this already that want this?

  20. “Nicki Minaj speaks about the possibility of having 50 Cent on her upcoming album weed plate.”

    * LMLDO Laugh My little dick off

  21. LOL @ Pssssst
man i would be surprised if he did a million in the first week…i know he’s got a strong female following but don’t know if he’s a million broads deep

  22. 350k – 750k.

I can’t see a million. Plus, the album is mediocre. Seriously, it’s just: Ok.

  23. @ M.E.A.N. I’m saying Illmatic was a classic and it didn’t sell that well, which shows that album sales don’t mean shit.

  24. I think he’s selling more then Wayne 1st week, I’ve been saying this for the last 2 months. DRAKE WILL BE A HUGE SUCCESS…………. he’s a Jew remember

  25. Read my words and put at least a minimal effort into understanding what point I am trying to get across before you criticize them.

  26. no way a million, especially with how disappointing it is, j. cole and recovery should forsure sell that

  27. yea Carter III was mediocre, garbage really, and that didn’t stop that bitch from doing a million…females don’t know what the difference between mediocre albums and dope albums are, their buying into the image, and thinking every song is about them…and that’s who we’re talking about when it comes to who’s buying Drake’s shit…though it seems like it, don’t think Drake got that “all buy whatever real album (not that rebirth shit) he puts out” hype like wayne does though

  28. There’s a huge possibility he could pull it off. Without sounding like a diss, think about the fanbases:

TeenNick crowd, who he locked in from the Degrassi days

    R&B Loving Females
Fans who’ve been rocking with dude since he was underground,

Lil Wayne’s fan base he vicariously acquired via the affiliation

And then of course the Jay-Z and Kanye cosigns, not to mention a bunch of other stuff. Name another new artist dropping a debut album that had that many accolades attached to their name and brand? I don’t think a million is farfetched at all, but maybe a “Million” nowadays is more like 500,000. We’ll just have to see.

  29. DAMN SHAKE HOW MUCH DID DR PEPPER PAY YOU FOR THAT!??

  30. Good album, not a hip-hop album strictly. I think dude makes good music overall, doesn’t have to be lyrically breath taking to simply be good. I like the vibe of the album as do most people who don’t frequent this site. I predict 750,000+

  31. and you can’t name illmatic in terms of sales because it was different times back then, it has nothing to do with content of albums…now it’s full blown machines behind “hot” artists…illmatic probably wouldn’t sell that much in today’s times either

  32. well this nigga likes to brag about how much he can sell anyway…mentioned it in his lyrics more than once…including his verse on Pass the Dutch..got arrogant pretty quick, oh well, good luck drizzy

  33. upcoming weed plate hahhah good shit

  34. Theyre right about him not havin that breakout lollipop type single. that song dominated earth for a good while

  35. @ M.Hannah…LMAO @ Drake being “underground.” And you left out the people such as yourself that will buy this mediocre album. You never miss a opportunity to praise & stroke Drake, so it’s safe to say your comment would never be miscontrued as a diss.

  36. 350k

  37. @TC
thank me later is not illmatic, just don’t make that comparison again

  38. I love the people here, the majority of you cunts, who seem to have a personal disdain for a 23 year old kid trying to sell his album. It’s quite humorous frankly, as he will go platinum and you will all come to this site to bitch about it in comment sections. Enjoy your cynicism, and Drake must be doing something right to trigger such angered/bitter responses from clowns such as yourselves.

  39. How fucking clear do I have to make myself, I am saying that Thank Me Later does not come close to Illmatic but will probably sell more because album sales don’t mean shit.

  40. Please stop with the iLLmatic comparisons. This shit is more like when Bud Bundy dropped his album in ’92!!

  41. I’m just going to stop because apparently people see Illmatic in any post and decide not to read the rest.

  42. ^^^wasn’t meant for TC
Just Aubrey Stans in general who think it’s better than illmatic.

  43. @hmmm?
it seems like the only one in this comment section whos angry is you my dude LOL i know usually people stay gettin dirty on here, but no ones really been dissin drake in this post, so chill the fuck out

  44. @TC – yeah, I see what you’re trying to say, but to those who don’t think you’re saying that TML will be classic like Illmatic regardless if it sells.

  45. Fuck That! Drake is garbage!! 250K tops!
Eat a dick Toronto! Blue Jays Suck! Bosh is leavin’! Drake adopts the accent of whoever hes suckin’!!
    1.

  46. Oh I’m angry? Lol damn I should re-read what I wrote to convey the anger. Nah, don’t see it? I just see a bunch of bloggers who think they’re professional music critics.

  47. nope! it’s not even a good album and plus if you want it you can download it for free.

  48. @OU812

Maybe I’m not just a hater like some people. I like dude’s music, so I support it. Point blank. I think a lot of people such as yourself probably give it a listen to, because you take time to comment on his posts. If you didn’t like the music and weren’t a “hater”, but just simply someone who disliked his music, you wouldn’t even give him the time of day. What dos my support of an artist have to do with you? Nothing.

And he was “underground”. That’s the term used for someone unsigned, regardless of how many “hip-hop purist” type heads want to act like “underground” is a genre within itself with a distinct sound or something. That’s just what some people generalized it as. The literal term describes an unsigned artist.

*shrugs. The album was dope to me. There were a few things that could have been better, but overall, it was good. You either like it or you don’t. So what?

  49. @hmmmm? – um, go ahead and listen to those whom you consider professional music critics. no one is preventing that from happening.

  50. Sales dont mean anything, with the way people just download albums we can never know how much really sells, no matter what, I think drake has enough fanboys to buy watever is on any record as long as he puts his name on it. i think at least 500 even though its garbage

  51. eminem did like 1.7 on mmlp i think his first week. lol

  52. 50 cent did 1.14 million in 4 DAYS with “THE Massacre”

  53. idgaf what anyone says records sells dont mean shit i could care less if it does a million what matters is if its good or not.

  54. FUCK ALL THESE DR. PEPPER BANNERS AND SHIT. I KEEP ACCIDENTALLY CLICKING THE SIDE OF THE PAGE AND NEXT THING U KNOW IM ON THIS DR. PEPPER BULLSHIT. WORST SODA EVER!

  55. @0081800… are you fucking retarded? Work on that reading comprehension dipshit.

  56. yea sales really dont mean much…im sure Souljaboytellem sold more than Nas at 1 point…if any1 says he’s better than Nas, kill yourself immediately

  57. ke$ha only did 150k no way drake does a million id be surprised if he breaks 250k

  58. @Rujabes his popularity is strictly based on his employment with Young Money

  59. u all know this question is irrelevant? it’s like guessing the weight of a baby? … really?… the only thing the dude or anyone behind him should care is that has healthy first week sales.. why does anybody want him to fail? why would u want anyone you dont know to fail? … hes not ruining hip hop.. hes jackin flows from dead prez.. jacking melodys from every soul artist that ever came.. and he’s a prolly a fairly smart dude.. hes got some clever lines.. i like resitance.. I guess.. fireworks is cool, I dunno, hes just another artist with a cd, I don’t really get it? .. lets just wish him good luck.. and move on…. somebody else did I think, i’ll jump on that train.. good luck.

  60. i hope nicki dont let 50 on her album, then again if 50 was on every track it would still be more worth listening to than thank me later

  61. I’m really wondering though.. like that was a serious question? what makes anybody want to wish these artists failed, or disappeared, is he not your taste of music? is there somebody you like or atleast somebody that can try to succeed without all of the above? lol… wow. Yall got me stunned today.

  62. Jonnie, he is a better songwriter, a better singer, and a more commercially viable artist. Nas is a better lyricist, period.

  63. Nickolas, can’t believe you are just realizing how many haters troll Drake posts on the daily, it’s comical.

  64. He sale ah millon proves that niggas dnt kno wat good musik is ijus dnt see the big fuss bout him he’s mad yawwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnn

  65. @NickolasReid granted some people want him to fail, but most have heard the whole album, and its one of those albums u listen to once and dont have a desire to listen to again. also his hype and arrogance would make one think it would be legendary. i like drake, but the album is bad. All his mixtapes are better than it. and songs like “bollywood flow” somehow dont make the album when it blows most the songs on there out the water. (Maybe whomever compiled the albums fault more so than drake)

  66. @Monroe… You clearly don’t like the dude. You saying the album is bad as though it’s an accepted fact immediately makes you lose any credibility you had and officially labels you as nothing more than a hater. The album is dope, great vibe throughout with some dope guests (minus Nicki).

  67. 446,000 Watch. I didn’t feel the album til 9AM in Dallas was a bonus track. Lol

  68. Whats even funnier is Aubrey Stans getting so mad, they have multiple posts bitchin’ about “hatred”. The niggas wack, no one wants him to “fail”, cuz obviously he hasn’t. So just shut the fuck up and i’ll listen to what i listen to and you keep suckin’ Aubrey.

  69. No more than 250k. Niggas don’t buy CDs anymore.

  70. Someone has to balance all you faggots ripping dude up all day. I like the hypocritical shit going on here too, yall niggas can hate on the nigga all day but when anyone supports him we’re riding his dick and going out of our way. Look in the mirror faggot.

  71. 400K-600K

  72. People are idiots, 1 milli.

  73. 300k not even gold.

  74. lol ya ur right, monroe.. I mean, he doesnt get to choose or have creative control over his finihses product.. he had a big ass hard drive full of shit.. maybe it was shit.. maybe not.. lol.. I like the album more than his mixtape.. I think.. I dunno.. I Like comeback season.. i still spin that record more than ill ever spin the album.. and uhh 2020 guy, I think there are people that hope his album sales the only copy to himself.. but he gets so much publicity from people like us.. and sites like this.. and haters like some of yall.. lol ;) its ok I still hate on soulja boy, and hiphops based off dance music.. =\ is what it is =\

  75. @hmmmmm?, ya too sensitive. R u even over 18? If you are, you should just come out the closet, you’ll be much happier.

What you wanna call “Hate” stems from all these lil beeyotches who wanna give this cornball “GOAT”,”legendary” status. As a lil bitch nigga makin songs for lil bitches and other bitch niggas, fine, u can have that but this herb is NOT AN MC and rappers cover candy!

  76. 1 milli….no way! All the songs on the album sounds the same and his buzz peaked about 6 months ago.

I was really looking forward to the album but ever since “Best I Ever Had” his music took a turn for the worst. Don’t get me wrong he has lyrics but the delivery is way too soft.

  77. I hate soulja boy too, but that emoticon is mad gay!!!

  78. Its so funny how now in these days if u dnt like a certain artist like the whole world do ur str8 up a “hater” when u give ur honet opinion bout an artist niggas needa stfu and stop actin like yall on drake payroll cuz he doesnt gve two shits nor ah fuck bout u smh.

But anyway he has atleast 3 good songs on there, album weak 2 me.

  79. AND FUCK THIS PILOT TALK DROP 2MARO! JETS F00

  80. rofl yall niggas are clowning. Me liking drake = i’m either 18 or gay… hmmm you sound intelligent. And when did I call the nigga GOAT, I just enjoy his music rofl.

  81. http://prestige.bandcamp.com/album/lost-in-nowhere-2-perfectly-different-2

  82. i know 50 ppl that buying this album…n im just 1 person…..
this mothafucka gonna sell at least 500k-999k lol…if he do dat milly thats wassup….nas a preacher…i love that nigga lol

  83. @hmmmm? not really man, re-read what i said. I know people like to hate on nicki, but the one with nicki is one of the best on there. (and your a fool if u think she didnt carry her weight on it) that and the following track “fancy”. other than those 2 songs (and “over”) id much rather listen to “comeback season” or “So far gone” if im in the mood for drake. If i want R&B imma listen to trey songz or alicia keys, not autotune music. but the few he raps on our dope.

  84. when i said “our” at the end of that last comment i meant “are”. lol Meka must be rubbing off on me haha.

  85. @hmmmmmm

That was all opinion…imo Nas is a better songwriter, just he writes about different topics,,Souljaboy’s content is more radio-friendly,,,if Souljaboy wrote about the same shit Nas writes about I highly doubt youy’d still say he’s a better song writer

  86. Btw fellas its been over 2 weeks since I posted any of my music on here because I’ve taken yall advice and worked on my skills…so check out this track rite quick and lemme kno if ya feelin it…
    ..
    http://usershare.net/ejvekfwtp1hz

  87. @JonnieHayward I thought u were fairly dope before, but that new track is real nice fam.

  88. @monroe thanks man

  89. wish i had a dime eveytime someone said “faggot” “hater” or “dickrider” on here

  90. I’m a fan of Drake.
    I downloaded the album.
    I will buy the album.
    That’s what fans do.

But 1 million? I hope he sells 20 million. Yeah his album wasn’t exactly ‘what I wanted,’ but ultimately it’s still a decent product of an artist who I like and hope makes more music.

    Just sayin’.

  91. co-sign @ boomerang slang lmao you’ll be rich like oprah

  92. quality has no correlation to sales. word to the adventures of bobby ray which didnt break 100k its first week despite the fact it was incredibly solid

  93. quality has no correlation to sales. word to the adventures of bobby ray which didnt break 100k its first week despite the fact it was incredibly solid

  94. Damn dude who comes in at around 32 seconds w/ the blue shirt sounds like Chris Griffin from Family Guy, lol.

  95. BOB solid? As a pop album, sure.

The hybridization of rap and pop is and has been among us. Hip-pop is the next big thing, word to drake and Bob.

Drake, even with the leak, will probably sell 800k the first week. Mark my words. There are still thousands out there that don’t download music illegally, along with those that do but still support and buy the album. I sure as hell won’t be one of them but to he his own.

  96. Drake is a queer.. as I’ve said before half his album material is whining about his “newfound fame” who the fuck would pay to hear that bullshit. NOT ME. First post hit it on the head.

  97. So, all ya’ll saying Drake is going to sell are saying in other words that DRAKE is going to buck the record industry trend?????? The Record Industry is DEAD. And the album leaked. And even if Drake sells the American & Canadian market for music is a bunch of flavor of the week ADD New Jersey Shore MTV consumers. B.E.P., Ke$ha, Katy Perry, & Glee are topping the charts. The only thing that will keep this album exposed for a sustained period of time is payola.

  98. @ zookeeper – yeah, Drake’s rappin like he’s bored with fame, bitches, fame & fortune on his first album. A little pretentious for the actor turned wannabe rapper who should really stick with R&B music. Wayne fed this dudes ego too much.

  99. D.Pepper.com

  100. WAYNE SED IT BEST

    A MILLI
    A MILLI
    A MILLI

FUCK THEY HATERS, THEY JUST IN DENIAL, THE THE TRUTH SMACK YA’LL IN A WEEK

  101. I need to stop reading the C-section. Ya’ll are depresssing. Hating a man you’ve never met. Talking about putting a hit on his head. What is wrong with yall man…

  102. @TC my bad dude I read your comment a couple of times over and now I think understand what you were tryin to say

  103. Will sell a lot but not a milli a milli a milli.

I thought B.O.B was going to sell too though.

  104. 500-600

  105. lets be honest kids he’ll be lucky to sell 500k.. i read somewhere they only shipped 400k… at this point a millie is really impossible

  106. there was a million copies shipped out, if he sells every copy is beyond me, he’s doing in the 200-600K range first week, whatever tour they do for the album will be big, hopefully Kanye’s album drops soon enough for both of them to tour together…

  107. LMAO “He wasn’t able to get his lollipop out the gate” oh shit lol that line killed me and i didnt notice nicki at first in the still of that second vid lol I was like is that chick Nikki lmao. i remember her from the smack DVD’s she has changed alot since then.

  108. @Sharkskin haha. did u even listen to Bobs album? if that is “pop” than drakes album sure as hell is a pop album

  109. I’m going 5 times platinum dog. How do I stop? I’m Hot!!!- THE GAME PUT YOU ON THE GAME

  110. sorry i could barely stand ‘over’.. i told my friend i was not feeling drake anymore he went from singing love songs for us females to talking about all his haters… we get it people dont like you but to center a whole album around it? BOOO im not dropping a penny to buy that

  111. BITCH SHUT THE HELLLLL UP!
He doesn’t even talk about haters throughout the album. Listen to the damn lyrics you ass. He speaks about his uncertainties and the paranoia that he encounters along with fame. How this newfound fame has ruined his love life. His newfound friendships. How becoming a superstar in a matter of moments has lead to conflicts in his personal life. Not even just that. So much other stuff. And he isn’t not singing and just rapping. Every song is a mix of RnB and Rap. He is afterall a crossover artist. Some of the songs are completely RnB with Rap-like verses near the end which even than are sung.

  112. And you suckface nigga up the boards who said its all about fame. Your wrong. He’s using that fame he found as a premise to impress upon us his introspections. That introspection leaves us with a vague amounts of information on his personal life which allows for contemplation and a sense of familiarity. If you take it and don’t diss the material and listen and THINK about what your hearing. Which is the conceptual difference between hearing and listening. Passive / Active. Ya know? But LISTEN, THINK, and see how you can relate to the songs. He’s not constantly swaggering up and boasting. Your just reading only skin deep into the music.

  113. LMAO at all of ya’ll. This 90 degree heat must be making some of ya’ll crazy as shit. Chiiill

  114. Drake sucks. Raps gay. Shut up.
