Meka, I applaud you for this piece. People have to realize that not all hip-hop needs to be taken so seriously. Yeah Nas and Lupe are great at what they do, but their music isn’t always fun to listen to. That’s where people like Gucci, Waka, and Lil B come in. It’s not music that’s supposed to be taken seriously, and a lot of these hip-hop elitists don’t realize that.

How I feel is people just need to learn to take music for what it is. I feel like the game’s in a pretty good spot right now because there honestly is somethin for everybody. If you don’t like someone’s music no ones forcin you to listen to it and there most likely is somethin out there you’ll like. I had my little elitist phase where I switched to everything I listened to was underground and I would shun it if was in the least bit mainstream. But I just kind of realized that was dumb, and I was just as bad as people who wouldn’t listen to a certain artist just because they’ve never heard of them. I’m at a point now where it’s just if I like somethin or if it sounds good to me I’ll listen to it no matter who it is. Everyone doesn’t have to be conscious or deep. Sometimes it’s just about chillin and havin a good time. That doesn’t take away from the fact that I still think there’s a lot of music that sucks ass, but no one’s forcin me to listen to it so I just ignore it.

I will half disagree with this. I agree there there is more than meets the eye to a number of the entertainers that make these songs. I’m sure a number of them are actually pretty cool guys overall. I don’t think that gives them a pass for making bad music though. You can be nonsensical, misogynistic and blabber about whatever you want, but you have to craft it in a way that doesn’t make someones ears bleed. It don’t have to be on some backpacker, hipster, skinny jean, lyrical, emo shit but you better have the basics down. Lil B does not make good music.
