Pusha T Explains Jay-Z Line On Jeezy’s Ill’n

1/2 of the (second) best duo ever speaks with VIBE about his recent line about Hov on Jeezy’s Trap Or Die 2 mixtape.

VIBE: Judging from the response on the Internet, the one line from the song that plenty of people heard is, “Tell Hova don’t pass the crown so soon, Unless he got a crown for every writer in the room/There’s too many spirits on these ghostwritten tunes, So you can’t crown the heir until you séance the room.” Can you clarify exactly what you meant by that?

Pusha T: I actually wrote my verse [around the time] “D.O.A.” dropped. I just feel like there are a lot of new artists in the game that still have to prove themselves. You hear so much talk about who’s next and who’s up next and who’s the man and so on and so forth. In all fairness, I feel like Jay-Z is still relevant. He’s still the rapper. He’s the crown-holder right now. But, you know, he cosigns plenty of artists all the time, so I just wanted to tell him not to pass the crown too soon because we don’t know enough about these artists yet. We need to do checks on them first and see what they’re all about. Obviously, ghostwriting is a very big thing going on, too. So we gotta see who the man is behind all of these joints if that’s what’s going on.

  1. PUSHA…right..but u left out the part where you also wanted lil wayne to get the message.:)

  2. Whatever you say Push…

  3. Jay aint that dude no more..sorry. theres more than a handful of a niggas that can spit jus as good if not better than Hov now…IMO Jay a lil overrated

  4. Cmon pusha, we not stupid foo…..Speaking of being real, instead of throwing shots at the mirror, point out the suspects since you want the spotlight.

  5. im talkin lyrics alone b4 ppl start talkn bout $….Nas, Fabolous, Kiss, Common (hip-hop version), Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Black Thought..etc…all those are credible MC’s

  6. Jay is very overrated. His last albums were ass. He’s resorted to putting on newbies(see J.Cole & Drake) trying to stay relevent while in the process of running locals out of Brooklyn.

  7. sureee

  8. Hov – “Drake’s up next, see what he do with it”

Pusha probably going at Drake and Wayne.

  9. Lol Jay aint lie when he said “I’m your favorite rappers’ favorite rapper”

Yet these “underground” lovers still refuse to give credit where credit is due. It’s never the rappers calling Jay “overrated”. Always the fans of these rappers who don’t get the shine they “deserve”.

Oh well. “Maybe you’ll love me when I fade to black”

  10. @KAMUS IF YOU REALLY REALLY REALLY THINK FABOLOUS IS BETTER THAN JAY-Z, KILL YOURSELF. THAT’S FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

  11. Jay Z and Fabolous both fucking suck

  12. Jay is ill and the hataz gon hate regardless.. Let these bitch boys talk out the side of they mouth all they want..

  13. didn’t Jay send shots at these niggas in Thank You? shit seemed blatant as shit

  14. @ Jay-Z WAS ill. Try telling me you listened to Jay-Z’s last 3 albums on the regular and I’ll call you a sucker. Biting NY State of Mind with Empire State of Mind…dude can’t help himself from biting concepts & lines from other rappers. And while Jay-Z is trying to stay relevent nowadays with these newbies, Nas is about to put out the best album in years with Damian Marley.

  15. ILL’N : best song of 2010…

  16. pusha stay shittin` on `em

  17. @Ethiopium
U oe of the Bitch Boys I was talkin bout.. Sucka ass nigga..

  18. I totally agree with Pusha T,let’s see some of the men behind the curtains..Ex:show lil Diggy actually writing a hot 16 in the studio,as if!!

  19. @ iCon. Feel free to elaborate…if you can.

I mean, dickriding Jay for no reason really isn’t a good look.

  20. 2nd best duo ever…..wow what a statement. Peace to EPMD, OUTKAST, UGK, 8 ball and MJG,MObb Deep and CNN( they stink now but they have dropped classics), MOP, BLACKSTAR, Oranized Konfusion, etc…..I mean the clispe are good , 2nd best ever..i thinks not..becuase of that statement I aint even read the article.

  21. I really don’t care, I’m just curious about who the best duo ever is now according to Shake:)

  22. So since everyone has a ghostwriter does that mean Pusha does too? Why is he exempt? Lemme see some proof he doesn’t ….

    http://screwheadsonly.blogpsot.com

  23. @ hejsa

    Outkast, without question.

If you disagree, you’re likely between the ages of 14-20, started listening to hip hop within the last 2 years, listen to hip hop for the beats, have Wiz Khalifa & Lil Wayne in your rotation, and are likely illiterate.

  24. Just want to put this out there, so if you want to read it, read it. If you’re scared of too many words don’t, that’s fine.

Jay doesn’t have to prove anything anymore. Not only is he ONE OF the best to ever do it (nobody’s catalog has more gems, whether they’re hidden jewels on some of his less than favorable albums or just his classic joints from his and other people’s classic albums), but he’s also by far the most successful rapper in the monetary sense and in terms of career exploits. Pac was around for awhile but he never ran his own career; Nas has been around longer than Jay and still doesn’t have the same level of control (best believe that if Jay wanted to release an album called “Nigger”, he’d have the final say on whether or not that shit was a go), and sadly, we never got to see BIG’s full potential come to fruition.

Eminem is arguably the only other rapper that can match his success, although he’s had a lot more pitfalls. Regardless of what you think of his lyrical ability, flow, appearance, morals, business acumen, or what have you, Jay stays winning. Always. And that’s the very essence of hip hop: winning: Winning battles, getting the most money, succeeding, the quality of chick on your arm, your gear, your whip….these are goals that have ALWAYS been interwoven into the fabric of hip hop. It’s naive to suggest that it all comes down to skills. Or worse, fuckin lyrics. You could argue about Big L, Pun, Blu, Lupe or whoever all day. But nobody, save for maybe Kanye and Em (and possibly Puff….but usually in a negative/cornball sense), has done more to bring hip hop to the forefront of mainstream culture over the last decade, which affords dozens of opportunities that didn’t even exist for artists at one point.

He’s had hip hop in a headlock for so long that dudes actually ask him to step down and pass the crown, or make room for the new talent, as if he’s actually PREVENTING them from having careers. So far, only Wayne has managed to step around his shadow. And he only seemd to be able to achieve that while Jay was “retired”, and his presence was minimized, and took advantage of the opportunity full throttle. But Jay did exactly what he set out to do ten years ago: provide the blueprint. Everybody copies his moves. Saying Jay’s overrated is pretty much the stupidest thing you can say in regards to hip hop, period. His DNA is all over pretty much 90% of anybody who raps’ career. Ask T.I., Game, Lupe, Pusha, Wayne, Fabo, Cole, Drake, or any of his other offspring. Even dudes who started before him jocked his shit (Run, Fat Joe, Cool J etc.) So please, stop exposing your retardedness, and saying Jay’s overrated. Pardon my rant.

  25. More unveiled shots at Wayne.

    Good.

  26. Also, I love Pusha’s style, but dude just needs to come out and say what he really means: Jay, stop passing “the crown” to dudes who have yet to prove themselves. Pusha feels like he’s done more to prove his worthiness; Drake hasn’t; Wayne has alleged ghostwriters. Jay never hands it down to his actual competition, or people in his lane (T.I., Pusha, Fab), he passes it to dudes he doesn’t compete directly with. Jay is that dude, but I’ve never respected his unwillingness to acknowledge his REAL peers.

  27. Pusha is just saying it like it is…….if u think wayne deserves the crown. Im sorry but ur a fucking idiot. Once u put ur voice in auto-tune, u should be allowed even in the talks about who deserves the crown. I think Jay-z really jumped the gun when he said wayne was the heir. And pusha just called him out on it. Good line.

  28. @ iCon – you see what George Clooney did there? He provided substance to a discussion. Take notes you invalid.

@ George Clooney – I see what you’re saying. Yeah, Jay-Z has the power and the success that certain MCs strive for and try to emulate. However, that doesn’t make him the best MC…and especially not in 2010. It just means he’s a shrewd business man with a successful marketing plan. How else do you explain Puffy’s success? Certainly not because he’s the best in hip hop. He should have really retired after the Black Album. Yeah, like him or not, he’s arguably one of the best of all time, but it depends on what you look for in an artist/MC. And your definition of ‘the essence of hip hop’ isn’t everyone’s definition of the essence of hip hop. Jay-Z isn’t on some conscious/contoversial shit and would never attempt Nas last album because it would isolate him and eliminate his mainstream fanbase & commercialism. And there is no crown. It’s a fictional idea that gives fanboys something to argue about. I will say this though…Jay shelving Joe Budden and locking him out is one of the greatest moves ever.

  29. Yal r dumb… hes not takin shots at Jay-Z…. hes sayin dont hand the crown to any of these new cats yet cuz we dont kno whose ghost writing for them or what they r all about… he specifically says jay z has the crown… yal illiterate or somethin?

  30. @ Barria – re-read the comments and realize the irony of the last comment in your post.

  31. i think pusha is talking about Jay’s status in the game. He’s one of the GOAT’s lyrically, but obviously hes not what he used to be. but look at what dude has done in the rap game. dudes an icon, and thats probably what pusha means by Jay still has the crown.

  32. “I really don’t care, I’m just curious about who the best duo ever is now according to Shake:)”

    outkast… of course.

  33. as, Fabolous, Kiss, Common (hip-hop version), Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Black Thought..etc…all those are credible MC’s

Fabolous @ oh dear , if you adding Fabolous in the list you might as well add Trey Songz and Drake Fabolous is pure R&B and is garbage. hot garbage.

  34. of course Shake thinks it’s outcast, look at the title of the site. personally though, i’ve gotta say i’d call blackstar greatest duo over outcast. just my opinion.

  35. Wow…are yall asses hurting? your asses must be hurting. I can’t imagine yall just sitting down regularly with all THAT JAY-Z DICKRIDING YALL NIGGAS ARE DOING!?!? WTF.

    J.Cole >>>>>> your top 100

  36. is clipse with roc nation now?

  37. jay z sucks? rakim. the last best rapper of all time [thats still alive] will agree to do it. and one of your argubale best rappers [big] would say jay is too. jay dope. yeah its other ppl who can come up with some lyrically better shit or body jay on a verse here or there. but aint nobody as consistent as jay. only jay inspires the rap community like this. as dope as drake is…. aint nobody coming in the game and asking him for advice. but everybody knows what that call from jay means. ask wayne, becuase it was after he got the call from jay that he moved to the next level.

  38. Pusha making a clear statement towards all the so-called “heirs” to Jay-z throne. Pusha been killing it for year but Jay only acknowledges the people the world wants to co-sign (Wayne, Drake). I think deep down inside Jay knows beside BIG no other rappers have talked a better game than the clipse. Real Talk!

  39. Jay knows the clipse is nice, or he wouldnt have tried to shoot a subliminal at them. Clipse always been nice and so has jay, I dont class jay as a current hot rapper, but he is one of the best even off the strenght of reasonable doubt alone. End of the day pusha is sending a rightful warning to rappers to step their penmanship up. Maby thats why pusha wana do a solo as well to prove one and for all he should be (if not already) aknowledged as being one of the best, im not saying top 5, but he DESERVES that recognition. If wale can get a co sign, the clipse shuda been co signed by the world all ready.

  40. Best due EVER, huh? Wasn’t this site based off of an Outkast song?

  41. Are the kiddos really bringing up J.Cole & Drake? Children, please. Even if/when they release their first official albums, they won’t belong in the conversation.

I agree Outkast is the best duo ever…but can’t forget Mobb Deeps first release. The Infamous is one of the most classic albums ever put out by a duo.

Pusha T is nice and one of the best IMO. That said, I think Malice brings more to the table than just coke rap. Either way, I’m definitely anticipating the solo releases.

  42. *edit: The Infamous was Mobb Deep’s second album.

  43. I’m gonna let some of you in on some brooklyn thinking today about the camel. the camel doesn’t get that love no more over here. we relate to the real struggle, the real comradely of brotherhood, and the real message of conversation not making words rhyme on a record for the record. the camel is all about his image and commercialism of street hustle. the camel real story is, he’s an untrustworthy sellout who pushed people down to get ahead. I know some of you SHEEP would say, ohh…fuck that! that nigga is rich and got beyonce. I would of done the same exact thing. we don’t fuck with the camel in brooklyn, I can walk out of the crib right now and hit up two blocks and smoke an L with my nigga Sean P. that’s what brooklyn right now is all about. I can go outside right now find the doctor who performed on the camel’s brother, who got shot by the camel and he will tell you, FUCK JAY-Z with the bullet fragment in a plastic bag he kept all these years. NO SLEEP TIL BROOKLYN!

  44. it’s about Wayne you dipshits, he been tossin shit at Wayne for a long time

  45. NYC/BROOKLYN<<Are u just being bitter or is there a general consensus truly u feel BK dont fux with Jay z? also didnt he shoot his brother wen they were like kids? U mean to tell me him and his brother dont speak or get along ?

  46. “killer minus the tattoo tears,
cos death dont mix with the shit
that i got floating in by the pier
tell hova dont pass the crown so soon…”- Pusha.T

  47. How come everyone gettin on jay for bitting nd stealing lines like no one else do it nd yea he has put out sucky albums, But bp3 was one of his best efforts in a long time. Like he said men lie, women lie, numbers dnt!! He has dat nd yes skills STILL to match. He’s not my fav mc but one of the best to eva do it thus dats why his fellow peers crown him the best in the game.

  48. And IMO J. Cole is betta than 90% of these niggas out here and jay should put his name out there more than wayne nd fuckin wheelchair jimmy!

  49. Jay’s relevant…..we stay talking about him.

  50. On another note….who told this producer to basically use the same beat (sample) from “Saturday Night” from Supreme Clientele? Don’t do that….

  51. @ SummerSwazy. I’m not “bitter” and I’m also not a HATER. I’m that type of guy that walks out of a surgery room and tells the family their loved one has zero chance of surviving. I’m the type of guy that will probably pull the plug even before I make the announcement. leave the prayers and miracles for the movies and books. I give the camel credit for having the most dumbest fans ever in hip hop. his fans will go the lengths of probably taking a bullet for him, while he’s in the middle of traffic chapsticking his purple lips. come on people! take a deep breath and exhale and come back to reality. the camel is nothing but a self serving celebrity who made a living washing brains, and leaving his close ones hanging out to dry.

  52. @NYC/BROOKLYN

Everybody I know in BK fucks with Jay, or at least acknowledges him. This is because he always reps for BK and he’s one of the few we can be proud of. I don’t what part of Brooklyn you’re talking about, maybe Sheepshead Bay. Secondly, you can’t go no where and smoke an L with Sean P. He probably wouldn’t even like you. Jay has had more influence on the game then any other rapper and even the best of all generations will point out his talents and his influence. And replying to what someone else said, I have never heard an album that sucked by Jay. Maybe it wasn’t that good for someone of Jay’s caliber, but that’s saying a lot because those albums are still good compared to everyone else.

  53. Oh and that last post proves you’re bitter about something.

  54. Btw only reason jay holds “the crown” bcuz the real best rapper is white cough cough em nd isnt a “give me the spotlight” dude. imean he did sale the most records in a decade (2000′s) & gets lil respect nd killed jay on his own record btw.

  55. If ya’ll dumb mother fuckaz ain’t get the memo, FROM THE NAME OF THE BLOG, then the (FIRST) best duo is OUTKAST, the 2nd being The Clipse. If you disagree then you need to listen to every duo’s catalog and come back(AKA I’ll talk to you in a month). As for Jay-Z, he’s always been suspect ever since he came on the scene with “I don’t write, I just listen to the beat and one take it”, if you believe that then you gullible as shit. I ain’t sayin Jigga got ghostwriters, but it dependent on what you consider a Ghostwriter. Is it someone who’s in the room, and bounces ideas and bars off of, or is it someone who writes your 16 and you spit it? My opinion is if you’re in a room w/ anyone and they spit somethin that you use or reword, you have had a ghostwriter, it’s that simple.

  56. @Chuuuch

?uestLove even said he’s seen Jay do that. And he even told Jay to repeat his verses 18 times cause it’s said to make things stick, you have to do it 18 times. Jay thinks of his verse/verses, recites them, then goes in the booth. The producer of Hard Knock Life said he just went in the booth and did the song in one-take, that means no fuck ups and no, “Lemme do that again”.

  57. AirRaid< The bp2 WAS wack.

Best rapper is down to personal opinion at the end of the day. Jay Z is NOT the best rapper imo. Hes a great marketer, which makes him appear to be the best rapper. Its more for his achievements outside of the booth that hes been "crowned" in all honesty. Thats why he went after Nas. He knew without (one of his great peers) going against him hed never possibly be seen as THE best, he was always in the shadow of some rapper be it Nas or Big, when he was just a music man, so he had to become the business guy aswell.

Pusha has a right to demand respect.

  58. I think people confuse Jay’s GOAT Flow with his GOAT “lyrics” not saying he’s lame at all, but Nas is a better Lyrical Rapper.

  59. I guess everytime there is a jay-z post and it gets at least 50 comments….that’s just him “marketing” yeah right…. jay-z’s the best rapper not because he’s marketed better… but simply because more people (credible or not) say that he’s the best rapper…. more than any other rapper….ever

  60. “SO AMAZING” http://usershare.net/ogxeqf4fb43d OVER 1,000 DOWNLOADS! SONG MAKES YOU THINK DEEP! REAL HIP HOP NO BS

  61. Outkast = best duo ever.

I wish people like Pusha would just say wat’s on their mind and stop hinting at shit. is it really that serious that u have to be all subtle about it? I appreciate him for saying something, but y not just come out and tell us what u think? Pusha gave such a bullshit post-game-athlete style answer in that interview lol.

  62. darryle <Thing is dont you remember, when wayne started marketing that he was the best rapper alive started calling him self the best rapper alive and all the magazines and shows were calling him that too, all of a sudden everyone was calling him the greatest. Jay had to put a stop to that and remind every1 he was on top of everyone, with the whole business man shit and oprah shit and say look im more than a rapper im the legend u gotta have me in that position, then he was back on ppls minds agaian.

  63. lol Jay-Z not relevant ??? Overseas Jay-Z is getting waaaay more radio play than any other US rapper.

  64. ^^How do you know?

  65. j cole / drake diss . .. .. … fools

  66. good too see i started all this Jay-z love/hate…i dont hate Jay-Z for da record ima fan and ive got all his albums im jus sick of seein otha nice MC’s who IMO can go bar for bar wit Hov (and hov knows it) not get credit jus bc Hov sells alot and has ventures in other business…i was jus talkin about BARS alone @paco: i believe Fab is jus as nice as Hov (why u think he got the co-sign from big homie) im talkin strictly BARS Fab has every aspect of emceein as Hov: doubles, mult’s, punches, metaphors (all dat good hip-hop shit) matter of fact Hov has slacked from jus the pure art of emceein IMO ova the past few yrs and has started to if u will DUMB IT DOWN or mayb he jus lost it a lil…..IDK…….*rant ova

  67. For the record the untimely death of Big L(Rest in Power) is the only resaon why Jay-Z is who he is. Big L was about to sign to rocafella and we all know who sounded like a rookie next to Big L. Big L was a mythological monster and jigga j would not have been able to hold up against him. Once again peace to outkast, epmd, mobb deep, cnn, blackstar, ugk, etc..Still laughing at 2nd best duo ever…What a joke

  68. Note: Count how many people are posting about this topic and Jay is irrevelant? Niggas is making me laugh.

  69. BTW Clooney shits on all other posts.
    Including mine.

    Everyone else: TL;DR

  70. Pusha was talkin about jay puttin drake on.. if you know anybody in the industry, you know at least 85% of rappers u hear on the radio rap ghost written shit and pre written “freestyles”
