In today’s post over at XXL, i talk about my fascination with Caribbean rhythms. And I didn’t have to make a mention of Rachel in it, either.

  1. Wow really?

End your blog, then end your life if you really mean that.

Taking a shit and staring at it > Dancehall

  2. Not a huge dancehall fan, but if Major Lazer counts as Dancehall I like that. That album is a fucking party

  3. Dancehall is to music what Burn Notice is to television

  4. Reasonable Doubt + Ready To Die + All Eyez On Me + Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous + Moment of Truth + Stakes Is High + Ressurection + Midnight Maruaders + Illmatic + 36 Chambers + Chronic + Doggy Style + Enta Da Stage + Art Of War + ATliens > Dancehall

Thats only a microscopic 15 albums vs. an entire genre’s history

  5. wow its okay if you like dance hall but to say its better than rap, its like saying weezy>

  6. Hey Meka don’t know if you saw the new Terry Crews old spice commercial, but here it is:

  7. Rap > Dancehall

Opinions are like assholes: everyone has one.

  8. Hip-Hop > Dancehall

    Dancehall > Hip-Hop

    Rap????

  9. fuck the haters Meka. I completely understand what you mean. I’ve been a dancehall fan for a number of years now and that shit always bumps so much harder than anything even close to hip hop related and I’ve been a hip hop fan my whole life.

  10. Sorry but Meka is RIGHT! In any case if we are talkin about the past couple of years

  11. dub is gay

  12. Yeah I love dancehall

  13. Seems to be quite a generalization. A conversation like this could be effectively argued in a book, but not in a half page blog.

As far as the music scene, Nas summed it up the well.

No idea’s original, there’s nothin new under the sun
It’s never what you do, but how it’s done
Whatchu base your happiness around material, women, & large paper
That means you inferior, not major

I gotta say the majority of hip hop/rap/r&b is recycled rehashed mindless nonsense. People will listen to/support/praise a track purely because of the artist and also because of dope production – regardless of the message or topic of the track. There are also moments of genius in hip hop for every wack Dancehall/Reggae/Rock/Pop/ moment. Depends on what people are exposed to, listen to, and looking for in the music.

What one listens to is dependent on so many things: culture; societal surroundings; peers; spirituality; values; what one relates to; if one is looking to music for entertainment purposes or inspiration, etc. One thing is for certain: people are sheep and slaves to $’s & #’s. Entertainment trumps substance because entertainment sells.

There are good Dancehall artists & albums. There are good Hip Hop MCs & albums. Having been overseas I generally find American music & culture embarrassing for the most part. I say this as a generalization – of course there are exceptions.

  14. I think Dub is snorting mad lines and well your names MEKA I would guess you fucking love dancehall and coke and anything not good (no offense) lmao

  15. no I take that back Dancehall is much better than RAP because rap is the uninspired, Shitty version of Hip-Hop

    so Hip-Hop>DanceHall>RAP

  16. Charlie Hustle good point.

    Again I have to reiterate;

Reasonable Doubt + Ready To Die + All Eyez On Me + Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous + Moment of Truth + Stakes Is High + Ressurection + Midnight Maruaders + Illmatic + 36 Chambers + Chronic + Doggy Style + Enta Da Stage + Art Of War + ATliens > Dancehall

Thats only a microscopic 15 albums vs. an entire genre’s history

  17. meka has always been a faggot

  18. Jonnie’s 5.3 cents:

Lol @ yall gettin offended by another man’s OPINION,,people usually listen to music they can relate to more than anything,,,I listen to soul/r&b like Anthony Hamilton, Musiq Soulchild, and John Legend and alternative/pop/rock like John Mayer, One Republic, and Coldplay and old school reggae like Bob Marley and Wailing Souls all more than hip hop/rap…hip hop’s still my favorite genre but there’s barely any good music that comes out of hip hop these days,,its mostly a bunch cliche and unoriginal emcees/rappers these days,,so I’m picky wen it comes to this genre..there’s more talent in other genres

  19. haha i knew this would get ppl bubbling over… Meka knows what he’s doing… fuckin dumb hip hop purists

  20. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back > dance hall

actual rap and r&b < dance hall

  21. Nas and Damian-Friends

  22. I’m never, seriously never, exposed to dancehall so I never got into it. I gotta say, while hip-hop isn’t perfect I’m pretty happy with it. I’ve gone through phases with a diverse amount of music genres, and hip-hop is the only genre that doesn’t end up being a fad for me.
I can’t really tell just how much you’re fucking around in the article. Saying that dancehall is better than hip-hop because of dancehall’s homophobic lyrics and an indecipherable accent seems a bit ridiculous.

  23. i dont think any1 really read the article or they wud be able to tell it was mostly a bunch of jokes laced together so mek cud pay for his rent

  24. Nice article.. being Jamaican, a dancehall and Rap fanatic… this article was like preaching to the choir. Nonetheless very well written and insightful

  25. haha i knew this would get ppl bubbling over… Meka knows what he’s doing… fuckin dumb hip hop purists

A false statement doesnt really mean someone knows what their during. I think Meka really meant it man.

  26. its his opinion so of course its not a fact… im not a big Dancehall guy but i can see where he’s coming from. Also if you didnt notice by now basically his job is to cause controversy with his opinions and he’s good at it lol

  27. Dancehall is dope. Meka likes it more than Rap right now & all you idiots are ready to rip his dreads off cuz of it. People can’t have their own opinion? Goddamn.

  28. meka you’re so pretentious

  29. ——-”Never mind the baby hair lacefront sounds of Sean Paul, Shaggy and the rest of those light-skinted hacks; I’ve noticed that the darker (and in some cases, uglier) the artist, the better the music. Mavado and Gyptian have been on a winning streak with their sounds, and they have faces only a drunken uncle your moms warned you not to visit alone would love.”——–

haha. holy shit. mekas going in. (nhjic)

  30. Co-sign Charlie Hustle.

And LMAO at people thinking Meka is clever or running shit here.

Meka is good at half-assed, snide, meaningless articles. There are people who possess more open-minded, effortless journalistic/editorial skill that respond in the c-section.

  31. Never mind the baby hair lacefront sounds of Sean Paul, Shaggy < wow just wow . man down lolz.

tbh dont get ur panties in a twist..meka just likes to be controversial thats all. he evend dissed dancehall in the article not sure if yall were reading it right .lolz.

  33. rap is my shit but dancehall murks everything when at any social event. and ive been to white collar suit and tie type shindigs lol
