The house that Harris built just released a snippet of their interview with Aubrey earlier today, where he speaks on the mixtape that put him at the position he’s in now.
Do you know something we don’t?
I don’t. I just read what I read. Even from, like, [Santogold] is coming out again, MGMT. You’ve got Jeezy. You’ve got T.I. Carter IV’s gonna drop as soon as Wayne gets out. So it’s a great year for music. But when you’re in it, you also start thinking about, Well, I can’t get lost in that. And I make R&B, and hip-hop, so I’m not only thinking about the rappers—I’m thinking about the Dreams, the MGMTs, just great music on a whole. That’s the best part about it, because that’s what makes my music better and pushes me to keep working on it, as opposed to just being, like, “Okay, it’s done.” I wasn’t confident when I dropped So Far Gone, neither. I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life.
Finish the quote and check more photos down bottom.
Really?
Yeah, ’cause I started the mixtape off with an R&B song about women that were lost in the world. It was a risk. I mean, we knew it meant something to us, but we also sat there, like, “Man, are people going to accept this? A rapper that’s singing?” And I’m not just doing melodies, I’m singing. Same with this album—I’m singing. And I even went further. I explored music on So Far Gone. I was taking other people’s music and revamping it. I can’t do that on an album. I love that genre of music. It sparks something in me when
I use soundscapes or write like that. So now I’ve crafted my own interpretations on that that apply to my life, and I’m just wondering, Are those going to work now? ’Cause it’s just me. It’s my shit. So it’s a lot of unknowns on this album.Sometimes I’ll have been up all night thinking about it, and then I finally get to the studio, listen to it front to back, and I’m like, “Man, this is a good record. It’s a great first record.” And it’s so crazy, too, because people are always telling me—oh, you know, like, the Kanyes, and the Jays, and the Jeezys, they put me, like, for some reason, over there, like my album is gonna be competing with those people. And I don’t know if it’s just what they assume soundwise, like, maybe it’ll sound that big and be in the category, but really, for the new artists that just put out a mixtape and are working on their first album, I mean, just those guys, the new class, that’s really where I’m at. I really only put out a mixtape, and this is my first album. And just, like, [Kid] Cudi or a Wale, J. Cole—time-line-wise, that’s where I am.”

He’s saying all the right things. I think Drake is about to drop a classic
MGMT is not R&B, at all.
Damn the other day i was listening to drake over some 9th wonder, wish he would get back to that type of shit but we all know thatll never happen since hes with fuckin young money
im glad hes not letting all the hype around him drive him off from the reality of the truth that hes just like all the other new artist but i do belive his album will be a classic.
Yeah it’s crazy how dude’s able to remain so humble with all the success he’s had. Most people’s egos hit overload once they taste the least bit of success.
Maybe I read it wrong, but did he just imply that MGMT is R&B?
im glad drake is still humble, i was beginning to not like him, but now that i see he still realizes that hes no bigger then any other freshman i respect him more, cant wait for the album
seems like a good interview. sounds like he slowed some things down from the language he is using.
No offense to the folks responsible for 5 of the first eight or so replies, but y’all are delusional if you think he’s being humble or saying anything to imply he’s about to deliver an instant classic.
I can look past the corny/cheeseball lyrics, the goofy demeanor and the diminishing quality of his rapping ability (which was actually impressive at one time), but I can’t get past how annoying and corny this dude is in interviews.
@yessir i dont think he implied MGMT was R&B – that’s why he followed that with “just good music in general”.
and dude definitely sounds humble. i dont believe he is as boastful in his real life as he can be in his rhymes.
@george clooney
If you ain’t a fan then why even bother listening to what he’s got to say? Have you ever graced the cover of a major publication or said fuck it I’ll just give my mixtape out for free which it happens to be arguably better than a shitload of albums. Where are you in life? You ain’t got to like him but at least recognize he went from being that dude in the wheelchair on Degrassi to having the most highly anticipated album in little less than a year! Shit I wish I could be in his shoes.
I agree with George Clooney…Drake is corny to me–but while I think his music is trash (just opinion) I do have a new perspective on his music. Drake gets the LeBron treatment–you can’t deny his talent, and he’s here to stay, but the media put too much hype and money into dude, as if he dropped 5 classic albums already. As far as his humility, I think Drake is on his on d***. He wants that untouchable Jay-Z status, so he plays Mr. Humble when he’s grouped with the big dogs (Jay, Kanye, Jeezy). After hearing that he didn’t want no rappers on his tour, though, it makes me think since he raps and sings (mediocre by the way) he think he’s better than the dope emcees that aren’t as succesful as Jay.
humble? hes being kind of arrogant to me with that last line “And just, like, [Kid] Cudi or a Wale, J. Cole—time-line-wise, that’s where I am.”
time-line-wise? WTF! LOL
He tries hard to be deep but it often comes off as corny. He could be genuine but based on lyrics he isn’t. What does he have to complain about, the cost of fame? lol. This new school full of suburban kids who don’t have real issues, from kid cudi to asher roth. I like most of what I’ve heard but they all come off as whiners.
@ C. Because he’s part of a culture that I love (and participate in). I’m not going to sit back and play silent majority on it, I’m going to share my opinion. This is a comment section/forum for discussing topics, it’s not just here for folks to type “DOPE!!” in. So if you can’t see through the facade “Young Angel” (smh) is putting on, that’s cool.
And btw, I’m doin fine. See, you’ve allowed Drake to convince you (along with a whole generation of tweens) that “money, cars, clothes, and hoes” is the definiton of “success”, when those are just a few byproducts of success, for some people. I’m good where I’m at. But thanks for asking.
Y do people like dis dude? I have yet to hear him spit some hiphop shit or atleast a dope song. Kids r either stupid or fuking queer these days. WTF Happened?
@GeorgeClooney “it’s not just here for folks to type “DOPE!!” <<<
your a 100 percent right…i cant argue wit that.
I don’t along with ANYBODY on this c-section have ever met Drake, and if u have met Drake, u don’t KNOW Aubrey, fact is:: He could be what “GEORGE CLOONEY” said, a closet douche, or a really ginuiwine guy who LOVes where he is at, and just generally LOVES this culture. This is fact, not C-sec opinion, BUT Thank Me Later is extremely anticipated, it’s prolly gonna be great, can’t wait to hear it, and “time-line wise” means in the span of quantity of product Drake’s put out in a year’s time, he’s in the same boat…but as far as success, money, attention, and buzz….sorry..he’s ahead of ALL them freshman nigga’s…THIS IS FACT, we all know skill wise who’s better, but FACT is…Drake’s on the level of a more seasoned veteran…I personally DON”T know why, and I can see why this would make a non Drizzy fan mad….but hey!
not a big drake fan at all and don’t know much about what songs come from what mixtapes, etc, but to dude that said he ain’t heard heard drizzy spit a real rap song, check ‘do what you do.’ to me, that’s the best i’ve heard from kid, and if he dropped an album of tracks spttin like that i’d be converted to a fan. other than that he seems fairly pop-ish to me, but hardly a surprise given who he’s signed with. either way, i don’t hate and wish him well, and if he drops a hot song or two that i like along the way i’ll definitely man up and admit it and bump the shit out of it. t-dot represent… whut?!?
god, drake is so gay.
I met Aubrey Graham (drake) last year and the dude was nothing but humble. He made everyone feel like an individual and not just 1 big pack of fans. He connects through his music by talkin about real shit… who still does that? Kanye, Cudi and maybe a couple other people. Nas and Ghost Face and all them don’t even do that anymore, they tell stories. Thats still great stuff but Drake is personally connecting to fans all over through his music.
SO BACK THE FUCK OFF hahah
drakes onl more seasoned because who he’s signed with and the insane amount of hype around him…really, drake is just a bland ass dude, always makin love songs and shit, they are still good but c’mon….drake is the new ll cool j
LL COOL J got some hits tho…some SUPER classic joints, member when ppl where comparing Drake to the Fresh Prince….only difference is..Drake sings, and Drake isn’t funny…atleast in song, he ain’t funny…MATTER OF FACT…PLEASE NAME SOME HUMOROUS RAPPERS, WE DON”T LAUGH ENOUGH IN THIS CULTURE
i dont see whats so wrong with Drake? in my opinion i like him
drakes hit or miss….he has great ability to drop great tracks like “fear” but then he goes and does a track like “over” and it just disappoints me…i guess thats what he has to do to keep less avid hiphop fans in his circle but its not what im into….ill stick to budden, j.cole, jay elec, nas, etc….dudes who have neverrrr disappointed
@DAROCKNESSMONSTAH you act like being like ll is so much of a bad thing. LL is considered to be one of the greats. If Drake can even come close to an inch of the success the LL has he will have it made. Sure LL aint all that now but when he was young he was great and when he did love songs he was still great. Whoever said rappers cant rap about love?? If you don’t want to hear love songs at that moment go listen to somethin else. NOt everybody wanna hear about your guns and chains and drugs or how you had it hard growing up. Some people want to hear about love cause that is what they are going through. I mean lets be honest this world needs more love anyways.
thats dope that a couple shots were done in Toronto – I see the CN Tower in the background there…
I hope Drake does drop something ill, but the Young money influence is going to ruin it. Typically canadian rappers have a slightly more underground feel but drake broke out of that and is wayyy pop, i think his fans would be receptive to some grit in his music, but then again i am just talking out my ass
CLICK THE NAME! We reppin that Tdot too!
Sigh. You make him sound as if he is the hip hop anti-christ. Let me take a wild guess and say your favorite rappers have made some corny hip pop syrupy songs right…
About your opinion. One can give a really unbiased opinion only about things that do not interest one. So even though this is a comment section to state your opinions why even waist your time arguing about his music. Oh yeah, to point out that people like me are literally brainwashed into believing “money, cars, clothes, and hoes” is the definition of success. Really? I do not know if Drake’s intention was to drop knowledge(sarcasm) on the hook but let me shed a little insight. Not everything said or sung on a song is to be taken literal silly wabbit.
Get off that “Keepin it real” high horse and don’t be such a hater because Haters only hate the things that they can’t get and the people they can’t be.
and what happens when j. cole and elec hit the spotlight and its time for them to get the fame, and all the publicity, and that one single that no one will like that was a fan of theirs…..yall gone start hating them and grab the picket signs…..then find sum1 elses dick to hop on…..big ups to drake im waiting to see what he produces
CANT WAIT FOR THIS NIGGA TO DROP HIS ALBUM HE GONNA HAVE ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS THIS YEAR
– THE BASED NIGGA
i do admit, he tries to be very deep about shit that isn’t deep. but i don’t detect an arrogance in his words.
In his Complex interview he was aerrogant,,in a lot of his lyrics he’s been cocky, borderline arrogant…tho on his verse on Young Money – Pass the Dutch he was pretty arrogant and unoriginal…in this XXL interview he went back to his humble side tho
I don’t know Drake so I can only speak on his music, IT’S TRASH. I mean there is no depth to it, Just because it’s pop doesn’t mean it has to be superficial. And the more he tries to be deep the less authentic his songs are.
Everybody been hoppin on Drake’s bandwagon ppl missed the boat on B.O.B I think he will put out a far superior album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwnPrVQURg8&feature=player_embedded#
Im not the biggest Drake fan either, some of his stuff is cool and some of his stuff is wack and i will definetly peep his album. but honestly i would rather see Drake in the mainstream than Wayne, Gucci, Flo Rida and Soulja Boy.
Ugh he didn’t imply MGMT was R&B, same way Santigold isnt. He’s just saying he listens to music outside his “genre” to try and keep changing his sound. Even though it always comes off the same.
if you’re gonna hate, please don’t click the link
forget this is who dat dropping to day
All these damn haters on here, if u don’t like his shit then don’t click on the link when his name is posted on something. Dude is only gonna get bigger and better.
Nigga Rule Numba 1 Neva Eva And i mean EVER smile in your pictures, Look serious as fuck like you have been through a hard life and got a deep persona about you.

but fuck that groupie shit.
“Like, last year, other than Blueprint 3, it was a pretty dry year for hip-hop, as far as, like, the legends. But this year it’s way different..”
im convinced this guy is either stupid or annoyin………
not taking a shot at Drake, just his lame ass YM click…
Gudda Gudda Gudda Gudda…Drake should ditch them…
Toronto all day..
