It’s called an Elongated pause, and it’s been around for quite a while. I remember Jay-Z doing it on a song on Vol. 3. I can’t remember exactly right now though.
But my theory is Big Sean brought it into modern popularity, because Kanye used it on GOOD LIFE. Now either it’s Kanye’s thing, or he was influenced by Big Sean (who was signed to G.O.O.D during that time) and he used it.
Big Sean is most known for using it with the SUPA DUPA style, and then ‘Ye and Drake went on to popularize it even more in their records in the past year. Now it seems a lot of people are doing it.
It’s not really a big deal. They just stopped using like or as, which can get just as mundane and redundant as well.
