I can’t believe people still argue about this shit. He just “assembles” the bars in the booth. This isn’t spitting a verse off the top of the head. And it doesn’t mean it’s not a freestyle. He comes up with the shit without writing it down, but he’s not just knockin out an entire fucking 32 bars straight that way.
These little verses people spit over other people’s beats have been getting called freestyles since the early to mid 90s. It started out on mixtapes. Around the same time, other people started getting all bent out of shape regarding freestyles being referred to as such if they were pre-written, mainly in the context of battling.
But like Jay, Biggie, Beanie, T.I.(at one time), and a whole gang of wack ass rappers before him (Weezle, Ja Rule, Soulja Boy etc), Crooked spits a couple of lines, plays the beat back a few times, picks up where he left off, and just builds the verse from there. In theory, this shit isn’t much different from writing the shit down. It’s not like he does it in 5 minutes. Although, Jay and Biggie are/were different in the sense that they listen to the beat for an hour, then spit the whole verse after memorizing it.
It’s just a process. It’s not impossible.
And I do think Crook is nice with his, but yeah, the skills don’t seem to manifest themselves well in song form, outside of his Slaughterhouse shit.

However, I think that it’s unfair to take credit away from Crooked knowing how fast he puts his verses together just by jumping in the booth with no pen or pad. This guy recorded an entire mixtape in a day without using a pen or pad. Give credit where it’s due.
