Digiwaxx hosted Nas & Damian Marley for a private listening session of their forthcoming collaborative album, Distant Relatives. While they only played a handful of tracks that we haven’t heard before, the majority of the material was head-nod inducing and sounded far from “forced”. During the brief Q & A segment of the evening, I got up the nerve to ask Nas about his much-debated beat selection over the years, and what the process was like picking the right production for this project. – Mikey

“You high”
what does she say before he says you high?
Good question, much respect on that one.

never thought I would see Nas wearing a V-neck shirt… lol
Lol Nas was going off topic, good shit though.
dude asked about if they had conflict sonically when it came to being more rap or reggae, which is a dumb question. You don’t ask (a real) artist if theyre trying to be in this box or that one. good collaborations work naturally.
my man…
Nas fielded these questions well. This is the first I’ve looked forward to this album. The idea never really made sense to me, but both these dudes are great artists.
I was there it was crazy
NaS is the most garbage beat selector ever, the only reason Illmatic was such a classic was because MC Serch and Large Pro executive produced it. Ever since then NaS hasn’t had another classic because of the beats because his lyrics are always on point. Instead of having an album full of heaters from Premo, Pete Rock, Large pro, Havoc, Dr. Dre, Kanye West and Alchemist he gets sub par beats from trackmasters, the hitmen, ron browz, salaam remi, polow da don
Why would this be such an issue for a project like this?? Of course its going to be a bit different, b/c its not only a mesh of Genres but also something new. But I will say this… from what everybody is talking about… Nas is gonna finally bring it again for that next Solo album, Qtip is organizing the whole thing with the right producers to do it… so if you know what Qtip is trying to go for, you can expect what alot of us have been waiting for over the years, Pete Rock, Premier, Large Pro, Buckwild…. watch!!! Its gonna happen
Honestly, when has Nas actually done us wrong?
Even at his worst, his beat selection was average boom-bap music but he still spit that real shit.
I never understood how folks complained about Nas when you look at what’s in the game.
Leutrim. you’re forgetting it was written, and not to mention a lot of beats from gods son and stillmatic
people like to pick artists apart. If thats his weakness then I’d say hes doing a lot of other shit right. and thats more than you can say for a lot of artists. Hes the best doing it right now, period.

<< no……..sigh….thats not a dumb question it would get nas to actually talk about how they meshed their sounds together or ideas rather than clashing. cos some collabos are just horrible and do clash. sigh. know it alls…………sigh.
“Who won in the wresting match?” hahahahaha
