Fashawn On His Ode to Illmatic Project (Video)

During the Freshman 10 for ‘10 cover shoot XXLMag.com spoke to the 20-year old MC about the concept behind the disc. “The idea was birthed out of my album, [Boy Meets World],” he explained. “My album was getting a lot of comparison’s to Nas’s first album… So I threw the idea out there, like what if I redid Illmatic …will people still say I sound like Nasir…or will they just trash the whole [notion]?”

Ode to Illmatic will be hosted by DJ Green Lantern and features only one guest appearance by Kweli.

  1. Nasir > ____

  2. Bold move Fashawn…this is a make or break decision early in his career,,will he make fans or lose fans with this tape?…that is the question [sarcasm]

  3. eagerly awaiting

  4. noones sounds like nas. stop it.

  5. Damnit, where the El is “Elmatic”? I mean Fash is dope too but…

  6. Nas is Nas, Fashawn is Fashawn…both are extremely dope and both are their own person

  7. i think it’s fresh that he’s paying homage.it’s a mixtape and his generation has no clue about illmatic. high school kids in the central valley don’t know about illmatic. now at least through him they’ll understand what it’s about.

  8. stop it 5.

  9. Im working right now on a mixtape call “Ode to Gutta” Ace Hood’s first album. Its gonna be crazy. I hope 2db post that shit.

  10. Nas sounds so much like Nas its crazy. J Cole is the new Jay-Z, Fashawn is the new Nas, andJay Electronicas the new Jesus.

  11. Remaking Illmatic? Chill. I like Fashawn and all but I don’t think you can win with this one.

  12. This won’t end well…

  13. hes not as good as he thinks he is,he needs to just drop his own “classics”

  14. The Greatest Rapper Alive is Maya Angelou, that is who you call a “true” lyricist. lol

People need to learn more about Maya and not Nas.

(BTW, of course ILLMATIC is one of the greatest hip hop albums ever)

  15. i dont see why alot of ppl think this is a bad idea. yea, its not gonna be superior to Nasir’s cause he dropped it in another time and we all became to know and love the album as he made it. seeing an artist, a dope artist at that, pay homage and put his or her spin on a classic is a great idea to me…

  16. his first album was/will never be close ta illmatic… he can hang that shit up

  17. LMAO @ stop it 5. who compared his first joint to Illmatic?

  18. damn people are way too sensitive over this album, i mean yea its probably one of the greatest hip hop albums ever but your missing the point. hes not trying to sound like nas or one up nas, hes just trying to pay homage while at the same time seperating himself from that comparison by remaking the album from his perspective so people will see what hes about

  19. well we say what happened to “we are the world” remake!! i don’t agree with this, soon new kids on the block going thing they can get shine/creed for redoing classic. this going open the door for “reasonable doubt” and “ready to die” remakes!!

nas, jay, biggie, pac weren’t redoing run dmc or rakim classics to get their name out there so why should these new kids?? like someone said let these kids make they own classics rather than piggybackin off of hiphop staples/classics!!

  20. smh at dude who said j cole is the new jay z.

  21. NOT GON LISTEN. Illmatic is not to be fucked with.

  22. Nas is still alive and active shouldn’t he get nas blessing before doing something lik this?? whats Nas have to say??

Nas career and legacy stand on Illmatic, i’m sure he has some feelin on a 20y/o rookie from the west coast remakin his classic. 2years from now 95% will have forgotten about Fashawn but illmatic will still be talked about, smh bad idea

  23. you all know green lantern is nas’ dj right? large pro gave his blessings. primo is a fan. so he has the blessings of the camp. reasonable doubt and ready to die have all been redone. it’s a mixtape get over it and stop crying. just cause he’s the only 20 year old in the world that can do this stop hating. Fashawn is the truth. props to having BALLS and not being a fucking pussy like the rest of these rappers out today.

  24. If Nas embraces this mixtape when it drops I believe it will be Fashawn’s best career move yet… I don’t think it’s a good or bad idea… just bcuz Illmatic is a classic doesn’t mean it can’t be remade & I’d rather Fashawn take a stab at it than any other emcee… ok maybe J. Cole or Jay Electronica, but that’s about it… the same ppl saying it’s a bad idea will be the one’s dry humping the mixtape when it comes out… let the man do his thing

  25. ^im sayin, if fash has the skills and the people that matter supportin him then let him do it, stop acting like hes tryin to rewrite the bible or somethin, like i said before illmatics dope very dope but just cuz its ur favorite album doesnt mean that as soon as fash rhymes over it, he’ll drop dead and his career will go down the toilet cuz some sensitive fans are upset
