Jay Rock x XXL

The Freshman had a few words to say about a certain alum when speaking to XXL…

XXLMag.com: Let’s cut right to the chase; is there any beef on your end with Cube?

Jay Rock: There’s no hard feelings or beef between me and Ice Cube. I just take it personal when somebody says fuck us [the new West]. I’ve worked extra hard to get to where I am and I’ve done it with no co-sign from no one and I’m not looking for a co-sign from Cube or any other rapper. Like I said [on Twitter] all I need is my mic, my fans, my hood and this big ass gun on my side and I’m good to go.

XXLMag.com: But still, it sounded like you were calling him out?

Jay Rock: Yeah, I was calling him out. I wanted him to say who he was talking about instead of making it look like he could’ve been talking about all of us new rappers. It’s a lot of people that’s hot about what he said but I guess I was the only nigga that felt the need to speak out about it. Where I’m from in the NG’s [Nickerson Gardens housing projects] we don’t bite our tongue. We was taught by our O.G.’s to call a nigga out on whatever.

  1. dun dun dunnnn

  2. cube aint gon say ish back. c’mon son.
love the diplomatic words of jay roc.

  3. Ice Cube, possibly my favorite rapper of all time, has reason to be critical of the new West Coast school of rappers. They aren’t shit compared to the west coasters in his day. Jay Rock and Game are two dudes that seem to be bringin it back a lil bit, of course others too but there’s nobody to compare to Cube, Snoop, Dre, etc…

  4. cube cant ride on past fame

theres nobody to compare to cube, dre and snoop because there not gettin the chance to

to many people side with either the golden oldies or the new era of music

shit why not have booth and njoy

  5. I think in some way they’re both wrong but my advice to Jay Rock is do something in the game before you say anything to Cube. Cube has sold millions of records, influenced many other artist, he is an actor, and he has made millions of dollars. Jay Rock has done NOTHING he is an average mixtape rapper and to be honest doesn’t even belong mentioned with Cube. This whole situation is just real stupid and I can’t even believe XXL is even entertaining this.

  6. Blu, Fashawn, El Prez, Murs theres a lot of talent on the left side. To be honest, Blu is changing music alot more than Snoop and Cube did.

  7. Oh and Cube is right the ‘new’ west coast rappers are garbage. The funny thing is Game has been saying the samething for the last few years yet I don’t see anybody calling out Game. Instead they rather call out a 40 year old rapper/actor who is basically just focused on his family now. I call that a bitch move and a cry for attention.

  8. ^cosign 412 & Ice Cube. These dime-a-dozen newcomers need to check themselves when it comes to talking about the pioneers. Jay Rock should take the criticism in stride an STFU. Dude has pigeonholed his appeal all on his own.

I quit checking for this dude after that a cringe inducing track Real Bloods.

  9. @ yo, yeah Fashawn & Blu are mos def nice, They have mass appeal IMO, not just claiming West and gangs like Jay Rock. Completely different type of MC’s with different appeal.

  10. Jay Rock is overrated. XXL ain’t no fucking bible… they’re just another rap mag that takes dough for cover slots. ask YN.

  11. @Snagz ”Jay Rock has done NOTHING” How’s he supposed not say shit when he’s tryin to put his stamp in the game and an old school cat like Cube, who’s got a followin and major influence, is tryin hard to make sure that doesnt happen? Cube is soundin like a hata 4 real. Look at Snoop, another OG in the game that no one can say shit to but he’s not stoppin the new west, he’s embracin it (example collabos wit Nipsey). Jay-Z doin the same thang too.

Ice Cube’s wrong 4 this one. U can’t tell me none of these new west cats aint got no talent (Jay Rock, Crooked I, Fashawn, etc.) u blind as hell if u do think that

  12. and yeah… Fashawn and Blu are the ONLY new WEST dudes that deserve to shine. The rest are wack juice… like that dude that looks like snoop.

  13. I can’t really take Ice Cube serious after seeing him in all those PG movies lol

  14. The Godfather of gangsta rap has spoken and if the shoe fits were it…
when was the last time you heard from the West?? (to me in the 90s)
20 years later new artist want to act like they started this gangsta shit.
if there’s one thing that describes Cube is “consistent” sure he made movies but at the end his still making music just like Jay Z.
Dude is a living legend and honestly I don’t have nothing against rock but he better keep putting in work if he wants to shine.

  15. Jay Rock needs to chill. Realize he should listen to a man who has 20-plus years in the game and has stayed on top of it!

  16. I mean cube is kind of right in some respects, cats should take it like “well shit if cube say we aint shit, then let me step it up.” U-N-I got salty about this shit too. I don’t think cube is dumb enough to dis the west and be from the west. He should have shouted some muafuckas out thats doin it at least, (blu, fashawn, pac div) cause it kind of sound like he out of touch a lil bit. From his perspective though when he got in the game, he and NWA was kickin down doors doin what ever the fuck they wanted, so he probably holdin them to that standard, right or wrong…

  17. Correct me if Im wrong but do any of these “new west” niggas even got albums out? Yeah Jay Rock Cube was talking to you you a new west nigga and he said new west niggas…now dont try to act tough in them interviews, put out some real fuckin music instead of that fake blood bullshit

  18. @I can’t really take Ice Cube serious after seeing him in all those PG movies lol

Yeah Co-Sign fam, I grew up on Cube and love his music to death , still have Lethal Injection and the Predator on repeat spin – It just strange him speaking West and Gangsta Rap either about the past or on new records and I start seeing this cat in “Are We There Yet” heh but keep getting that family comedy money. U-N-I , The Bay , man couple other im missing are on the rise on the west and cant be left out the discussion…

  19. @everybody gettin Cube for being in family movies…

being a gangster at 40 is not whats up….

  20. applaud that man

  21. Cube is the man … this dude here don’t really have a rep like that and obviously never will so he probably shouldn’t address that situation

  22. I don’t understand, these NEW West cats live in a city that don’t play they music put will dick ride the radio dj’s all day I don’t hear anyone dissing felli fell, devi dev I mean i see west coast artist around these 2 all day. Cube ain’t got shit to do with you getting props, He don’t control radio, retail, or the media. Sound like you need new management homie. How is cube a hater, these new west cat are wack. Who helped cube get on?

  23. @yadigg – Thats the whole point, these new west cats don’t have an album out cause they’re not gettin supported by the OG’s. Xzibit said it himself, if he wouldn’t have been put on by King T and Dre then he wouldn’t have blown up. In an industry of popularity, its 10x harder being a hit without a cosign from somebody unless you make poppy as bubblegum rap for little kids and girls. Support the new west and old west TOGETHER (Cube, Snoop, Dre, Bishop, Jay Rock, Crooked I, Fashawn, Blu, Pac Div, Glasses, Kida, all these rappers have talent)

  24. ^ cosign yadigg

“If you dont wanna shake that hood mentality, how the fuck we supposed to change our reality”

  25. ***Snoop may be the Big OG Icon WestCoast Don, but he can’t make a good album to save his life. The music he makin now is throwaway. I respect his longevity in the rap game but Malice in Wonderland had 2 good songs I could replay. I love Snoop, but True talk………the man needs Dr. Dre. Boss’s Life and Imagine are classic, where are those at?

  26. dudes are forgetting about The Alchemist and Madlib. they been doing it for 10+ years.

  27. this dude sound mad ignorant

  28. If Jay wants to shine he needs t make a hit song with Quik

  29. cosigns is only industry related….I aint never bought no album from a no name rapper just cause a OG “cosigned” him….if the music speaks then ill buy….if not then ill pass…..Hov said it best

“Wanna me to sit em on my lap/ but I aint got a beard and Santa Claus aint black”

  30. why do people think gangs don’t exist anymore? as long as people are getting murdered due to gang violence, then yes, GANGS are still alive in most of Los Angeles County.

I don’t know where a lot of you people live, but a lot of innocent people are still dying due to GANGS. I personally don’t bang, but I keep a gun in my ride and a shotgun in my room just for protection.

Honestly, I don’t think you can ever take the GANGS out of the West, its just a cycle. Yes it died down a lot, but its still here and alive. A 6 year old kid just got shot on the corner around my block, and for what? Just because another gang member was starring down another. smh.

    thats life…

  31. ^YUPP, you have the LONGOS in Long Beach blasting a couple black and asian people a week. not goood.

  32. Funny I didn’t realize we lived in the 90s still. Is the West Coast still supposed to make music about drive by’s and drinking 40s? I couldn’t give 2 fucks about if the new west has record sales; when was the last time you bought an album?

  33. Truth hurts… It seems like these new dudes are looking for support from their peers more than their fans. They have a sense of entitlement or some shit. Nobody owes you anything. The pioneers paved the road for you. Niggas expect them to drive them there too lol.

Nobody is stopping these young dudes from eating. They are STILL screaming Bloods and Crips in 2010. That divides them even more. Snoop, Ice Cube, and some of the other veterans realized a LONG TIME AGO that it was a losing battle. Niggas over here ain’t trying to here that gangbangin’ shit. Make some fucking music that the average dude can relate to and they’ll support it

  34. I’m surprised to see this many sensible responses in this comment section. Good shit.

Anyhow, Cube’s never been one to bite his tongue. This man went hard at everything and everyone from the LAPD to the president to Korean store owners to Arsenio Hall to Hollywood to the entire east coast at a time when that shit was hard to do. He was the first to bridge the West and East in terms of working with artists from NY. He was arguably the first rapper to forge a successful career at acting. He’s one of the few artists that can actually say three of his albums (including NWA) are certified top 20 of all time material. The guy’s not just a vet, he’s a legend. He practically invented west coast gangster rap. How the fuck is someone like Jay Rock, who’s biggest claim to fame is a couple of mixtapes and a remake of How To Rob, going to take shots at the same dude that pioneered the sub-genre that he’s trying to profit from? I could understand if Cube said his name specifically, but if you can’t take a little chin check from the OGs every now and then, maybe you need to call it quits.

And dude who said that Blu is changing music a lot more than Cube and Snoop did needs to pick up a book, no disrespect to Blu.

  35. i suggest that Jay Rock should really re evaluate what he is saying…. u ain’t gonna be making classic music like Ice Cube

  36. co-sign George Clooney

I’d appreciate more artists like Fashawn, Blu, Shawn Chrystopher, etc. from the west.

  37. I cosign on Blu and Fashawn.

Nipsey is ill too, so I don’t know what Crack Rock Specialist was talking about.

But yeah, some of the others are bananas in pajamas juice.

  38. I live on the W but never heard of blu & fashawn but to me the new West will be…..Bishop, Problem, Hot Dollar, Nipsey, Young De and of course Jay Rock. I didn’t mention crooked because hes been in the game for a minute.

  39. ^ Bishop Lamont’s been cooling on the back burner for way too long now. I think he might have missed his window. Nips is straight. I don’t think he’s going to do pre-LAX Game numbers, but he’ll be around for a while. The rest of those dudes will be out of luck less than 5 years from now.

  40. ^ Like someone said there’s more rappers than fans.
but that’s how the game is nowadays

  41. Blu..
    Fashawn..
    U-N-I…
    Pac Div..
    TiRon..
    El Prez..
    R.o.m.e…

  42. Agree with everything George Clooney said. Jay Rock is cool but yea. He should really shut up and make some music.

Ny the way, I LOVE Blu and Fashawn too but. No love for Kendrick Lamar??

  43. ^^i was gonna say the saaame thing…K Lamar is doin his thing!!!

  44. And, silly shit like this is why gangsta music isn’t getting spins. We off this ego shit and on to some real shit.

  45. NEW HOT ASS SHIT ……HOMETOWN FEAT JAY ROCK , GLASSES MALONE, AND X.O.
