I still never understood how OJ could be on this cover. No, not because of the rapping skills or lack thereof, but because of the fact he’s already dropped a national album & had a chart-topping single. But maybe that’s just me…

First thoughts: Why is Wiz hiding in the back? Why is Nipsey the only one not wearing black?
Where is Vado, Yelawolf, Alley Boy, Pac Division, Laws, or Kendrick Lamar. I’m sure we could debate this list all day but only time will tell. J Cole and Wiz might be the only two real stars on this list.

In all honesty these covers don’t really mean much. I mean yeah any exposure is good exposure, and XXL is a pretty popular outlet, but just because they decided to pick these dudes in no way shape or form gives them full access to blow up. I mean look at Drake. He didn’t even get on the cover and he’s one of the biggest rap stars out right now. I wish them all success, but XXL seems like they get a little too much hype or credit for these covers sometimes. Like they get the final say in who’s goin to blow…lol
I think this is the best Freshman cover so far. These guys seem like they have more of a chance at mainstream success than last year’s class and the year before.

The Freshman ’09 covers was so lighthearted and hipster-ish (do we still use that term?). This Freshman ’10 cover though is so…dark. I’m not gonna call out these guys skills, but out of these 10, only 4 have overrall good talent and of those 4, 1 already have an album out (not OJ). At least the ’09 cover was something different, whether you think Asher Roth or Cudi can rap or not. These guys on the cover, with the exception of Fashawn who had BMW, haven’t really proved me anything, and I gave all of these guys (even Orenthal James) a shot of listening.
This cover also shows me the current state of the rappers out right now. Maybe it needs to be more than 10 guys, and make a special edition issue of 25 artists or more who got next, like URB 25.

XXL Did a HORRIBLE job with this.
All i know is that the most talented, innovative artist out of all of the possible freshman candidates is XV and i think that its kind of a joke that hes not even on the list. Im not even going to talk about OJ because I think anyone who has listened to even a verse of his knows hes got no talent. Wiz is solid but he has no creativity. Big sean gets respect even if he is a little boring. Pill Jay Rock & Jay Cole are all sick and deserve to be there. Fashawn is by far the best rapper on the list, Boy Meets World at least in my opinion is one of the best if not the best album of the year. I what XXL is doing and I enjoy there freshman list but my boy from Kansas needs to be on there. CuDi is one of the few music artists with a very theatrical approach to music. His beats are so funky they will blow your mind if you are under the influence of anything. Look up “Do It Alone” and tell me if you still hate CuDi.
It’s obvious now that Drake’s mere presence on a song changes it. He’s just a powerful factor in music.
And B.o.B is undeniably the most versatile artist in hip hop right now. I wish the timing were a little bit better, because B.o.B should be on 2010′s list. He hasn’t even released an album yet and he’s better than all 10 of these artists.

Most of these guys are nothing more than just rappers. Regardless of what they have to say, they aren’t bringing anything new to the game. It takes a little more than just sick lyrics to make it in hip hop now. You have to craft your own unique sound. Like last year, Bobby Ray and Kid Cudi were helping to change hip hop with their unique styles.
