This was pretty dope. Fashawn is ill. His album with Exile was very legit. That’s one thing that Fashawn has a one up on a lot of the freshmen is that he’s already dropped an album and is on a world tour.
M. Hannah said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:09 am
XXL finally chooses an up and coming artist instead of an established one (I’m looking at you, Wiz Khalifa).
Athrin said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:11 am

visco said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:23 am

SUPERSLIM64 said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:27 am
I love how he mentions complex mag in an ‘freestyle’ for XXL..
Isn’t Jay Rock gonna be in this too? That’d make it 3 West coast representas
The Kid CK said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:28 am
Boy Meets World was my favorite album from Last Year. Our Way is sick. As is The Ecology.
dalek said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:31 am
Don’t know how you could be disappointed. I was sold on Exile’s production alone.
Athrin said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:38 am
so whos the 10 freshment? i know nipsey, pill and fashawn… who else?
i think if u have an album out u shuldnt be a freshman rite?

BMW was the best album of ’09 & already one of my favourite albums, mad replay value
Dan said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:48 am
Aite then I’ll check out Boy Meets World
JonnieHayward said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:50 am
i still feel like Vado shoulda made this list, if u listen to cams gangsta grillz 2 he went off on every track and personally besides fashawn he harder than ne one on dis list
HChiphop&MJBrecords said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:58 am
How can anyone be disappointed by Boy Meets World? It’s hands down the best album of ’09. SUPERSLIM64 must have some crazy high expectations for Fashawn.
Y3K said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:00 am
fashawn’s album was dope as hell but the majority of music listeners haven’t heard it so it is good to see him getting his due shine on XXL. Pill and Nipsey are good choices but Wiz has been around for a while so I dunno about that.
bryan said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:15 am
wiz k-h is jus garnering a lot of reconition right about now so it is OKAY for him to be on xxl freshmen ’10. J.Cole is also another name that will be in it. those two are the best. real talk.
but what song is this from????
bob--fool. 2 dope said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:21 am
Fashawn really deserved it I hope he starts getting some attention. Boy Meets World was incredible. As soon as I found that I started playing the CD, The Antidote, and One Shot One Kill (mostly for the Ratatat remixes) around the clock.
OGEazy said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:32 am
Boy Meets World was a very good album, definitely top 3 of ’09.
Jesus said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:33 am
Its funny too, because I wasn’t a fan of his mixtapes, but when Shake accidently gave BMW to us, I gave it a spin and have had it on replay since then.
Jesus said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:35 am
BMW is as good as illmatic
Paul P said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:36 am
I wouldn’t say it’s as good as illmatic. That could be considered Blasphemy on so many levels.
Athrin said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:44 am
lmao @ Vado should be on the list. I mean homie can rhyme and all, but he just seems like another regular NYC rapper to me. Not really anything special about him.
DynamicShots said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:52 am
this is better than the other 3…easily
reupvick said this on February 18th, 2010 at 8:52 am

fash and j.cole my 2 Fav and now that there both on the top 10 hopefully they can hook up and make a track Ft. BLU that would be the DOPEST SHIT EVER!!!!
Juan said this on February 18th, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I’ve heard a few people (not a lot, a few) compare it to being a “new school” Illmatic, but even that is wrong. As much as I enjoyed Boy Meets World, I personally thought that 18 tracks was too much. Out of 18 tracks, 14 was pure, and 4 was skippable to me, so had Fashawn kept those 14 tracks on, it wouldve been classic. I still think that Fashawn is utterly sick though, and I’m proud as a Californian to see him up there.
D. $cience said this on February 18th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
@The Kid CK..ill still be offended by the comparisons after listening..that’s like people comparing talented shooting guards and ballplayers that wear #23 to Michael Jordan…if this were illmatic level Fashawn wouldve blown up by now,,he’d have more hype than J. Cole
JonnieHayward said this on February 18th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
JonnieHayward, you haven’t even heard BMW but you acting like you some sorta hip hop authority you’re personally offended by a comparison? LMAO. Sure, BMW & Illmatic comparison’s are bold, but it’s a dope album in a similar timeless mold. Illmatic came outta nowhere without any expectations. Hip hop was waaaay a different game then youngen. Nowadays, too many talented MC’s remain relatively unknown in the abyss of too many rappers and A&R politics. If you really a hip hop head, you’d already be knowing this.
And J.Cole is a clone…he ain’t saying nothing new.
Archipelago said this on February 18th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
BMW only had 15 tracks. AND Fashawn is the best Freshman hands down if not best new artist out.
olliekid said this on February 18th, 2010 at 1:15 pm
hes gonna have to use all them co signs when he goes major haha i think j cole is the only one of these freshmen who is gonna have great success on the first album
sound fx said this on February 18th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Illmatic had shitty sales when it first came out. It wasn’t regarded as a classic until later a while after it came out.
Athrin said this on February 18th, 2010 at 3:23 pm
@olliekid:
You’re right it got 15, I added some loose tracks to replace the ones I didn’t like. Still one of the best Hiphop albums of the past few years.
D. $cience said this on February 18th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
only really bad track on BMW was the track with exile. that song sucked.
haithere said this on February 18th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
This is the first dope pick by XXL. Im dissapointed that im not learning of new artists this year like i did last year
monroe said this on February 18th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Yea thats because XXL has sparked the search for up and comers. I’ve been searching for a while before the first Freshmen list and got up on a couple and half the list on last years I never heard of. So now looking at the success of the first one and the hype thats been brought around it XXL has created something that the industry may use to promote new up and coming artists if they feel they cant promote them or want to increase the hype behind their artist. This may or may not be true, but XXL has created something that is not only selling a lot of magazines, but starting something could either benefit or not benefit us.
We still have yet to see.
Teddy said this on February 18th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Great to see Fashawn shine. Boy Meets World is a personal classic to me.

weak verse.
Purp said this on February 19th, 2010 at 8:42 am
If the man can compare the feeling he got from BMW with Illmatic who are you to be offended by that? It’s an opinion and everybody is different. Sometimes I don’t get you supposed “Hip Hop purists”, art is subjective and has no guidelines so why must someone share the same opinion as you do?
And for the record when Illmatic was released it didn’t do the biggest numbers regardless of the 5 mics and classic status. *puts Stars on blast*
YaBoyRampz said this on February 19th, 2010 at 10:02 am
BMW had 15 tracks and three bonus tracks. so d. science is right.
ziplockp said this on February 19th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Fashawn is dope. Illmatic? That is just plain dumb. I liked his album and think he has a lot of room to go. BMW was a little weak on the beat selection,so in that sense I guess he should be compared to Nas. (c) lol p.s Name dropping should be left to The Game.
lance UNO said this on February 19th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
im still rollin off of “Im offended, i havent listened but i cant be true.” GTFOH is it unlikely – very but possib;e – yes
jonnie h, that was a bigoted statement
