Last week the good folks at Complex drew up this list of the sneak attacks Jay-Z has done towards other artists. This week the tables are turned, as they list the many sneak attacks thrown in his direction:
READ: Shots At The Throne? The Sneakiest Disses About Jay-Z
Hip Hop, Misc.

The only throne Jay-Z sits on is a toilet.
lmao… dem dudes r jay z stans, it’s clear as water..
game wasn’t sneaky! he had his crowd chanting “FUCK JAY-Z!”
‘Throne’?????smh :( … -3.5 points for Complex
yeah that shit was lame to read by the end of the first page. after every diss they put jigga dick back in their mouth and explained why they disagreed wit what the artist said.
very biased.
always love to hear guys go off when ppl say jay is the best. lol this is fuckin complex mag ppl! this aint 2dopeboyz claimin he the best. its a fashion mag sayin jay-z (the most successful commercial artist of all time) is the king. what else are they supposed to say???? besides that, this list is actually pretty good, i wonder who they got help from to make it haha?
^^I think Eminem has had more commercial success than Jay-Z…idk the facts tho,,commercial success doesn’t necessarily mean u r better than your peers…SouljaBoy has had more commercial success than J. Cole and Wale and Curren$y probably combined..
^^^^^^^^^^
SouljaBoy has an physical album out, so you can’t really compare him to Spitta or J. Cole
co-sign the 1st two comments
Well Spitta do got a album..although it was digital but still u get da point…Souljaboy’s a lil more popular than Lupe too…pretty sure he’s got more youtube views than him lol
True. Hey Jonnie,I know you’re more into finding instrumentals, but you think you could get me a acapella of Eli Porter? It would be greatly appreciated. And remember, this question is coming from Jesus.
they’re really reaching on this. I’m pretty sure that the Nas verse on ‘You’re Da Man’ was addressed at mobb deep
nas > jay-z, everyone knows that. hop off jay-’s dick
Damn this guy are riding jay’s dick for real, if i were nas i would make a complex Diss
you people are fools to say Jay-Z for what he has done isn’t the best…well some of you are fools…Even if you hate Jay-Z he’s on everyone’s top list…. even if you hate the Yankees or Lakers or UCLA…guess what? they still have the most rings don’t they?
@the Messiah…I’ll be a good Christian man and see what I can do
ugh, this was painful to read. so much bias.
Many of these aren’t sneaky at all. They’re blatant. Jay’s are sneaky because he’ll say it wasn’t about other artists when asked. Some of these are either blatantly about Jay or reaching
Nas was known for making really disappointing albums…ha
if it’s so biased, why don’t people:
1. show me better sneak disses to jay
2. prove that he didn’t get the best of the rapper that threw the sneak diss
3. explain how jigga doesn’t have the thrown
i’ll be back in a couple hours to see what people say. come with heat, and don’t trip, this is just for good debating. #ohletsdoit
@modi….All depends on what you think the ‘throne’ is…if you think it belongs to the most skilled rapper, then its def. not Jay-Z..if it belongs to the most lyrical rapper, then its def. not Jay-Z (Nas proved this)…if it belongs to the ‘hottest rapper’ (corny MTV) then yea either Jay-z or Drizzy Fake…if it belongs to the most popular/successful, then it belongs to Eminem who sold more records than any1 in the past decade if I’m not mistaken, plus he’s got better skill/lyricism than Jay-Z
^^^^^
that
i can’t believe i spelled “throne” “thrown” like a fucking gump.
repect to @jonniehayward and @shyguy, i respect the opinions. still wanna hear more though.
@modi
respect.
jay z had sneaky lines too. they praise him and look down on other artists for doing the same.all of the artists had reasons for throwing subliminal shots.
wether legitimate or not (including Jay)
yet they still hop on his dick cause he’s “Jay-Hova”
haha I NEVER SAID JAY-Z WAS THE BEST but dude has had more commercial success than eminem. I believe dude has had more number 1 albums than anyone ever. em has gone diamond and sold more albums worldwide but every jay album has been number one since vol. 2. anyway how do u make a case for the best rapper ever. music is all preference and culture based. Im from Milwaukee, I love midwest shit. I put common and lupe in my top 5 lol. cats from NY biased about Big and Nas and Jay. new cats all about wayne and shit. i just hate it when cats dont take that shit into account and label somebody else as stupid for havin their musical preferences (which are directly influenced by where you from, who you are, all that shit). thats my 2 cents (again lol)
Haven’t been in the C sections in a minute! What up?!?
It’s a history of sneak disses towards Jay-Z. Highlighting some shots I’m sure folks forgot about. Granted, there’s bias towards Jay, but besides losing to Nas lyrically (sonned him with business moves) he didn’t take in L in any of these battles. Just saying.
@zhendee
Lol. There’s a good amount of hardcore hip-hop fans in the Complex offices, broski. Check the Pun thing? http://www.complex.com/blogs/2010/02/08/vote-big-puns-all-time-greatest-verse/
@Modi what up?
Oh yeah, the name MISTA23 has been deaded. It will live in the C-section HOF on dope hip-hop sites everywhere. Going by the gov’t from now on.
@modi – to be honest, the Lil Wayne verse referenced about Jay in the Complex article is practically better than any Jay sneak diss (with the exception being his sneak diss at Mase on “Ride or Die”).
I respect Jay, but far too often when his name is brought up, we give him a pass. To me, there can never be a greatest rapper because there’s too much to take into account (cultural bias, sales vs. skill, etc.)…but if Jay has the throne for anything, it’s that he’s been the most consistent in terms of relevancy.
Here’s my point:
- Best rapper = BIG
- Most influential = Pac
- Most consistent = Jay-Z
- Best skill = Eminem
- Most sales = Eminem
- Best Lyricist = Nas
So while yes, Jay-Z is a legend, the throne belongs to no one. Jay-Z as the GOAT is all zeitgeist!
Name one other rapper thats managed to stay relevant as long as Jay? Just because he’s not the best lyricist or doesn’t have the most technical skill, that doesn’t mean hes not good. I think based off the fact that Jay has a decent amount of skill and has stayed relevant for as long as he has should be enough to warrant him a shot at holding the throne.
@DGtheEnigma
I don’t think you can say Pac is the most influential, when Rakim basically laid down the foundation for modern hip-hop in a technical sense.
@Jesus – I agree with you, but with 11 albums, it could be argued that Jay-Z has about a 50% average when it comes to his catalogue.
It is no secret that Jay-Z drops a great album only to follow it up with a subpar effort…and this trend continued through BP3.
He’s remained relevant by riding whatever the new trend of the moment is since The Black Album.
2005 – He was hopping on tracks with rappers from Houston
2006 – He was hopping on tracks with Rick Ross & Young Jeezy
2007 – He was showing up backstage and on 106 & Park with Kanye
2008 – Quiet as kept, Jay’s whole approach was jacked from Lupe (check the “not cutting my hair til my album drops…”)
2009 – BP3 was nothing but hopping on whoever was hot in 2009 to stay relevant
…and I actually like Jay-Z. But at least I can be objective.
@Jesus – Quick question? Are you from the East Coast? If so, there’s no way we can have a reasonable discussion about Pac’s influence.
Yes, Rakim laid the foundation from a technical standpoint, but Pac’s influence can be felt from Southern rappers (Scarface (who has said as much), Master P, Lil Wayne, etc.), East Coast rappers (Ja Rule, 50 Cent, DMX, Jim Jones, etc), Midwest rappers (Eminem, etc.).
Simply put, no matter what you may think about Pac as a person/rapper, his impact has been lasting on just about every region.
Actually Im from the midwest, but I can understand where you’re coming from on the Pac thing, thats why I said Rakim from a technical standpoint. And yeah, Jay hasn’t been as great post Black album as he was before it, but I think American Gangster is boarderline classic. Also if you’re gonna argue about their catalogue, look no further than one of the artists you put on your list, Nas, and even Pac to an extent.
I must have missed the part of the article that claimed it as fact. There’s nothing wrong with sharing an opinion as long as you recognize it as such and don’t try to pass it on as truth. This wasn’t a news article…
@Jesus – Respect my fellow Midwest chap. I agree wholeheartedly that American Gangster was Jay’s last true classic (interesting that it will also stand as the last Jay-Z album with in-depth coke/crack rap).
Nas has always been all over the place, but to my point, I give Nas no pass. His catalogue is equally erratic. Still doesn’t take away his lyricism, just like Jay’s erratic catalogue doesn’t wipe away his consistency.
“if it belongs to the most lyrical rapper, then its def. not Jay-Z (Nas proved this)”
Get the fuck outta here. Nas got the best of Jay exactly one time, on Ether, and even that’s debatable. One great album don’t make a great career. Complex said he was known for making horrible albums because…drum roll…he was known for making horrible albums. Nas fans are revisionist historians. If we were to go on a good song for good song basis, the Nas playlist would be over before u even got a third of the way thru Jay’s list. And I don’t even think he’s the best ever, but come on, he’s WAY better than Nas. Better career, better albums and lyrics (except Illmatic), MUCH more impact on hip-hop.
sure jay-z will make a diss for 2dopeboyz foro comments hahahhaha,
ether boy.. . lol
ILLMATIC can crush/brooooke/smash/destroy/ all jay-z discography

Kind of silly the hate they send to Nas.
Both Nas & Jay will each be remembered for select albums. Though, Nas’s best release is a contender for best hip-hop albums ever made & Jay-Z’s best is not. Both have several classics under their belt and both have been artistically successfully though from different merits. Jay is commercially successful while Nas isn’t.

Ask any rapper or anyone who wants to be a rapper…and 100% of them would rather have a Jay-Z career than a Nas career….everyone here commenting would rather have a Jay-Z career
ONE MORE POINT:
A lot of the “sneak dissses” are other rappers saying in a way that Jay-Z has the throne and how they’re gunning for and i quote “the throne”
is there more discussion?
@ James….
ummm…Reasonable Doubt? Blueprint? The Black Album? i’m sure you heard of them as being the best Hip Hop albums ever made
ohh and ask 90% of the new rappers out now from J. Cole to Drake to Wale to Cudi to everyone says that they’re inspired by Jay-Z if you want to talk about influential
wow they sucked jays dick dry
@ darryle. Good albums? Yes. Best Hip Hop albums ever made? No. That is a matter of opinion – and in my opinion, none of those are better than Illmatic.
J.Cole, Wale, Drake, & Cudi will never be in a ‘best’ discussion and wouldn’t know where to begin if they tried to emulate Nas.
If you’re a big Jay-Z fan, you should know he’s a style & line-jacker. His recent jab at B.I.G (I Wanna Rock rmx) was in poor taste.
Current Nas >>>>> Current Jay Z. Easy.
there will never be a best rapper of all time. too many opinions and factors…
all the known greats (biggie, jay, pac, nas, rakim, eminem) have ALL put out classics AND hot garbage. to me, there are less popular emcess better than all that i have mentioned above, but because they are not as influential, consistent, and successful, most of you are going to not count them anyway. so to me, THERE IS NO KING…
and i wouldn’t say jay-z got the throne, cause not everything he put out was good (half of vol 1, vol 3, half of dynasty, bp2, kingdom come, and half of bp3 sucked to me), but because he’s sold more yall would put him above someone like redman (whom i think has a much better discography than jay-z but doesn’t have the sells). even common (who had wack albums too) to me has a better discography than jay’s.
but what i’m saying is my opinion based on what i like, your opinion may be based on something else… but that’s my point.
btw, of course jay got more #1 albums than eminem because jay put out more albums, but em got at least two diamond albums, something that jay-z will never have. shit, even wack rappers like nelly and 50 cent got diamond albums.
who keeees?
lmao darrylle might be the most misguided poster I have EVER seen on this site. no shit they want the money of a career like that, but none of those albums compare just stop it, youre making a fool of yourself
@Demise…..Look at everyone’s best albums of all times…those 3 albums from him are ALWAYS on the top…all media outlets TV, Blog,Magazines whatever, ALWAYS on lists….google it, you just might see what i’m saying that it’s fact,i’m not the only one that thinks that…. I mean Illmatic is one of them as well, i like it as much, sometimes more than the jay albums, so i’m just not blind hating or anything….
and @ Archipelago…. it wasn’t a Jab at BIG, he was actually saying that Since he isn’t here, he’s the king….he’s been repeating that throughout his career….and EVERY RAPPER uses other people’s lines at times…its what they call “paying homage”
I have nothing against anyone’s opinion, but sometimes you people just hate and that’s whack….why can’t Jay-Z, Nas, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Common coexist, why does it have to be about who’s better than who
Reasonable Doubt? Blueprint? The Black Album?
Come on, I got love for all 3 for them. They’re Jay at his finest but none of them have ever held a torch against Nas’s Illmatic due to the following various reasons,
a. producion
b. nas’s lyricism and flow
c. nas’s age
Most people who say blueprint or black alubm is a contender for best hip-hop album are just hyping it up because they’re not. and everyone know reasonable doubt isn’t on par.
Nas secured his place in hip-hop history and on a wall of fame with just one album. Even if he never recorded again the kid can’t be touched. Jay hasn’t done that but he’s built an empire out of himself and for that he can’t be touched. He’s the ideal balance, the best of going commercial while maintaining the art form.
that is HIGHLY debatable. His Age? really? so when people put on that album they ask what his age was? again that is just your opinion…which is cool….but when looking at the bigger picture you must say that it’s one of the best albums in Hip Hop history…not James history, but HIP HOP history
i can’t believe i’m arguing whether or not Reasonable Doubt is a classic album, i’m sorry it’s your opinion… but don’t feel threatened…. I wasn’t exactly saying which album is better than which… don’t feel threatened by it
Waka Flocka >>>>>> all da wack niggas yall mentioned. He spits dat shit strayt from da trap, they even tried to assasssinate him, he soo hood.
i love the C section on this site. thanks for the info boys & girls.
anyway, FUCK JAY-Z
just read his comment, and you’ll say the same thing
soulja boy’s gayness >>>>>> waka flocka’s realness
“ohh and ask 90% of the new rappers out now from J. Cole to Drake to Wale to Cudi to everyone says that they’re inspired by Jay-Z if you want to talk about influential”
I’d take the endorsements of Jay Elec, Lupe, and Blu over any of those guys you just named.
what the mag says is true fellas ……….but somehow ….jayz shuld hve won the nas vs jayz shit …it dissappints me …theres a reason y i spelled it DISSappoint…..commercial sucess yeah …..but the opportunity was there to show your vanity ..but u didn get hold of it nigga
