Common: I’m Going Back To Boom-Bap (Video)

Good news, everyone © Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth: Lonnie’s going back to the sound that made him a lyrical force on Be. Bad news: expect the cacophony of “purist” coonery to follow soon.

  1. Explain how the word “coonery” is applicable to people discussing Purist Hip Hop and Common, please.

  2. You sure like the word “coonery”, Meka. Almost as much as you like the term “wax poetics” and Shake likes the word “liberated”.

Hopefully Com can take it back further than just Be, which wasn’t exactly “boom bap” shit. He was probably thinking about Resurrection when he made that comment. Maybe you’ve heard it.

  3. Didn’t see Skylar’s post at first, but I’m wondering the same thing.

  4. > He was probably thinking about Resurrection when he made that comment. Maybe you’ve heard it.>

nah, i’ve never heard of this “resurrection” album. perhaps you, in your infinite e-wisdom, could tell me what this is, yes?

or maybe you can go that way –>

  5. I say he should go that way ——————————————>

  6. No need for such coonery, Meka.

  7. Your name should be George COONEY, you fuckin dumb ass chicken shit homo soundin faggot!

*Goes back to listening to his Lebron Flocka James cassette*

  8. RESURRECTION: Common’s Truth

  9. Emotions are running rampant in here now.

  10. Shut up George COONey or I’ll come to your house and rape every female residing there, you homo faggot. And if there aint any females there, I’ll hunt down every female with any affiliation to you and rape them, and tape it and send you the video.

  11. co sign @George Clooney.

Be was like all soul samples. Mostly produced by Kanye and when Kanye was VERY into soul samples. That’s very un-Boom Bap. So i dont know if you can have that title for the post and then refer to Be as the sound he’s going for.

But you know Meka and Shake, since they can post music their opinion is never wrong. We like what you do but don’t talk down to niggas like you some expert music critic just cause you got a damn website.

  12. Ladies and gentlemen, Reason and Logic have just entered the building.

  13. wat up…

  14. lmao, shouts to “reason and logic”

  15. Ladies and gentlemen, George COONey is a homo fudge packing faggot!!!!!!!

  16. lmaoooooo.

what up Reason. Logic you still owe me five bucks so fuck you.

  17. strange cuz i hear a lot of boom bap in be. I believe you need to go listen to chi-city, the corner, the food, and tesitify. Just because there’s soul samples does not mean it cant be boom bap. Boom bap in my opinion has more to do with drums than melodies and samples but hey what the hell do i know. Whether it sounds like resurrection, be, or an evolution of the two i just hope its not universal mind control, and i hope he doesnt rap like he did on finding forever cuz he was not the lyrical genius we know him to be on that album im sorry. I love common but i would much rather have an evolution of resurrection or be than any of his other albums. Just my opinion

  18. Meka failed! Agrees with Clooney…

“We like what you do but don’t talk down to niggas like you some expert music critic just cause you got a damn website.”

  19. funniest thing about this is none of the “Purist coonery” Meka was so worried about. Just him getting called out on labeling Be “boom-bap”. You’ll make a great music critic/DJ one day.

  20. ummm. @shippskelly

please listen to Resurrection tracks : Watermelon, Book of Life, IN MY OWN WORLD for examples of boom-bap rap.

it does have a lot to do with the drums but a having a snare in the beat dosnt make it boom bap. it’s that mid 90s hard snapping snare preceded by a hard bass kick.

    but what do i know.

  21. lil do yall realize…yall just done fell for the “purist coonery”

    SMH.

  22. LONNIE!

  23. when did homie from the bay cut his dreads

  24. DAMN, Clooney just won the whole damn thing!

“We like what you do but don’t talk down to niggas like you some expert music critic just cause you got a damn website.”

    EPIC

  25. [...] [Post jacked from 2dopeboyz] [...]

  26. One Day It’ll All make Sense is the epitome of boom bap

  27. Common been hot since he came in the game. I give a fuck if he sold out or not. All of his albums been fire.

  28. “We like what you do but don’t talk down to niggas like you some expert music critic just cause you got a damn website.”
    word the fuck up.

  29. thank ya’ll for feeling my words and finally peeping a way i’ve been feeling about 2DB for a minute now.

  30. yeah, i’ve been using 2db since it’s birth, and even though i appreciate the free music, shit gets annoying sometimes.
but hey, who am i to complain? i’m just a misled sheep.

  32. Common hasn’t really been on the boom bap tip since his first album. Back when he was still the gangsta ass Common $ense. But the track The Game was one of the most boom-bappinest songs I’ve heard in a long time. If he is planning on doing shit that hard, I welcome it with open arms.

  33. Yup. Definitely Purist Coonery. Being a purist makes you a coon. And Olugbam said that not clooney you key punching fucktarts.
