Two blocks away from his Harlem home, 88-Keys sits back and recalls the day Q-Tip introduced him to a little detroiter named Jay-Dee during a Beats, Rhymes and Life recording session. Back in 1994, Dilla hadn’t accomplished much yet, but somehow skillz recognized skillz, and 88 gave him a beat-tape with his beeper number on it…
NB : if you’re from Newark and remember jacking this guy’s backpack in the mid-90′s, you might be the owner of the greatest Dilla beat-tapes collection ever. Unless you recorded some bad boy shit on them or just threw these no-rap tapes away.
Again, Gasface FTW!

woah imagine having those beattapes

Wow…I didn’t know 88 had been around since back then.

1: Those beat tapes were out of this world dude.
bruceleeroy: a. You forgot my hyphen b. I am (which is why I haven’t updated/posted on Twitter, my blog or website in about 4 months). I’m back in the lab.
Nap: My bios are somewhat misleading; I was born & raised in the Bx, moved to LI in ’90 (or ’91) then got kicked out of my parents’ home & moved to Newark (a.k.a. Brick City) around ’96 or so. And, to clear up any discrepancies, I was still living with my parent’s when the late/great ‘Dilla & I met.
soneerokz: Yep! Made my “professional debut” (a.k.a sold my first beat) in ’97; Network Repz – “Dos Collabo (Hip Hop’s Delight) ft. Bahamadia & L-Fudge. This was RIGHT before the Rawkus era of hip hop.
Shouts to 2dopeboyz & NahRight. My sources for keeping me informed & (somewhat) still relevant. Thank you & thank you all! Now… Back to work on this beat. Check my time stamp yo. :P

Oh damn. Convert my time stamp to EST. This should actually read: January 3rd, 2010 at 2:04 am. I’m up working bangin’ out new music for y’all. Trust! Peace!

hey yes, i’m wondering what this jay dee’s voicemail “88 keys geek down” is all about…
Alisha World said this on January 3rd, 2010 at 6:05 am
geek down: Ignorance is not bliss I assure you. I’m one of the few fortunate people to have met him & known him before The Creator took him back to paradise. Friends (& even siblings) sometimes get into it but at the end of the day all is well & peace is restored. Jaydee was my friend as well as one of my inspirations. Shouts to Ma Dukes, Common, Erykah, Frank-N-Dank, Que D. (‘Dilla’s cousin) & “Bobo” Lamb (‘Dilla’s brother).
Alisha World: “Long story” (but not really). I’ll tell all one day via my I Heart My Polo Lifestyle blog post when I’m ready to ‘resurface from the trenches’. Stay tuned!
