Rapper Shyne is expected to be released from prison today, as initially reported on HipHopDX this August. The 30 year-old rapper a/k/a Jamal Barrow was sentenced to 10 years in June of 2001 for charges stemming from a high-publicized 1999 shooting incident involving Diddy and Jennifer Lopez. So what’s the verdict? Long, cold winter or Shyne just becomes the 2009 version of Mysonne (ie: excited when he came home, but nobody cares about him now)? SHAKE UPDATE: MTV is reporting that Shyne is still in custody due to his immigration status…
But his release is now under review, as representatives for the rapper revealed to MTV News that the Brooklyn MC is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at an unspecified facility in Western New York State. Officials are determining whether or not to deport the rapper, who was born in Belize, a rep explained.
“Shyne is currently in federal custody while his future immigration status is determined,” the rep said in a message to MTV News. Shyne attorney Oscar Michelen emphasized to MTV News on Tuesday afternoon that Shyne has not been released, contrary to media reports.

Shyne made some bangers back in the day. He’s still relatively young at 30 years old so I would say he has a future provided he ain’t lost his passion or skill for the art form. I hope his time spent incarcerated provides him with a different mind state and a mental maturity that is lacking in a lot of rappers right now. I’d be disappointed to see no sign of progression in his lyrics and viewpoint on life now.

Fifty went on a rampage breaking down every single New York legend. We all know how Fifty is and his marketing strategies are no longer as effective, but by breaking down everyone from Wu-Tang to Jadakiss to Fat Joe, he made the fans take sides as if it were a war. We all know how lame it is to break others down to build yourself up, but to do this the staple artist of our rap scene only further divided the fans and give New York rap a “crab in the bucket” mentality amongst the up and coming rappers. Case in point, how many rappers had beef during this period? Everyone.
The comparison to Mysonne is not really accurate in that Mysonne was on the come up and was building a buzz before he got locked up. And Mysonne was really on a Ruff Ryder compilation and the first Violator Records compilation. Shyne, actually had an album released and was starting to make strides in separating himself from the Biggie comparison. And if you compare how many times Shyne was being shouted out on records to Mysonne, well…you can’t compare. The circumstance of their crimes are totally different. Mysonne’s trial didn’t play out in the public like Shyne’s. To many, Shyne took the bid that Puff should have like a true soldier. And it’s no secret that Puff has done everything to distance himself in very small increments from Shyne till recently. In a few interviews, Puff has acknowledged that he has spoken to Shyne to see how he was doing and where his mind was now. Now the only thing that Puff did that he didn’t have to do was not just release Shyne from Bad Boy but also gave Shyne his masters. Now if Shyne continues his rap career and his career takes off the way he wants it to then the masters begin to have more value. Right now Shyne-Po focus should be walking out of prison and going to see his moms. Eat some real food. Sleep in a real bed for a change. I feel sorry the female(s) that is going to be fucking him. He won’t be able to stop fucking for days. If he wants to reach out to the public he probably should hit up Angie Martinez cause she has been repping him on the radio. Say hello to the general public and just chill. Let recording come back to him naturally and not force the issue. If he has proper management then he will have a bunch of meetings set up for him in the near future. I’m sure some rappers will reach out trying to get the man on some records.
