Let me start by saying that opinions in regards to music (or, really anything) is not liable to be supposed by facts unless you’re talking about sales and albums released – neither which determine the TALENT of an artist more so than the backing of the media machine.

With that being said, this is my OPINION: while I have no idea (or real concern) as to the authenticity of Rick Ross’ life or music, it is hard to deny that the man has near-impeccable taste in production selection. That there gives him an edge over a wide range of artists out now. I would never make the argument for Ross to be a sharp lyricist – in fact, I couldn’t recite an entire Rick Ross verse to save my life. To me, he says just enough to not ruin the rest of his songs. So, comparisons to underground artists touted for being nice with words are kind of reaching. You don’t listen to Ross for wordplay, you do so for production.

The bottom line is this: complaining about Rick Ross and his music is pretty senseless. You know EXACTLY what his songs are going to be about: money, foreign cars, women and a soundtrack to a hustler’s lifestyle that he has more than likely either exaggerated or never experienced. But, that doesn’t change the way it plays out in the surround-sound system. If I was a drug dealer, I may be offended with his success. But, I’m not, so I’m not. I just press play and let it all ride out.

The more consistent a brand is and the more reliable it can be shown to be, customers are more likely to seek them out.

And how the fuck are you comparing an already established multi- platinum, world wide known artist like Radiohead, who decides to sell a new cd to an already million plus base, to some up and coming artist living off of buzz and club dates?

Underground artisr have buzz.
But that doesnt mean shit if it doesnt translate to sales.
Labels have been getting burnt with “buzz” artist for the longest.

Just because an artist such as Blu has no mainstream hits doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a massive fan base. Take other artists as examples.
Charles Hamilton (pre-overexposure) had one of the most devoted fanbases in hiphop at one point, with no mtv hit unless you count brooklyn girls.
Radiohead (granted its not hiphop) put out ‘in rainbows’ letting customers choose their price, had no mainstream hit, and STILL turned profit and gained fans.
This type of thing IS THE WAY that Mickey Factz, Kid Cudi, etc. all got record deals, and they are on their way.
There are your facts.

‘Buzz’ is what an artist has when they’re on the rise, not once they’ve hit the top. Once they’re in Ross’ position, they’re mainstream, and YOURE the one following the herd.
Oh, and don’t put words in my mouth. Im never going to deny that someone has good music just because theyve hit mainstream. Cudi is the shit.
However, Ross didnt sell because of art, or buzz. He sold because people were already familiar with his name. Its the reason Mcdonalds sells hamburgers. Its not that theyre better than in-and-out burger (if you argue that they are youre just stupid), it’s just that its what people are used to. But hiphop is a different industry than fast food. Hiphop is about following those with buzz. Ross will fade out.
