Jay-Z x XXL Magazine

Also, if you check for this issue my interview with the Clipse is in there [/cheap plug]. What up, Rob? SHAKE UPDATE: Hit the jump for some excerpts (via XXL)…

CRITICISM OF “D.O.A.”
“I’m not hating on young people. Like, when people say that, I’m like, What are you talking about? It’s just stupid. I’m not hating on young people… I’m not Bill Russell, [saying] Michael Jordan ain’t shit. I’m saying Lil Wayne and Kanye are like LeBron and Kobe. My job as someone at the forefront of the game is to leave it in a better position than when I came in. Same way that Russell [Simmons] left it to me. ’Cause this thing saved my life. Literally. So I have a responsibility to it karmically. And after that it’s on you. I did my part. I made ‘D.O.A.’ I said it. I made the statement. I made the push. Here, y’all take it from here.”

HIS LEGACY AS FORMER DEF JAM RECORDS PRESIDENT
“So if you ask me to grade my performance as the president, I’d say A-plus. No one can bat a 100. It’s impossible. I mean, everyone is looking at my shit. But if we really looked under the hood [of] every single [record exec] and the acts they put out in that time, I’d be comparable to anyone.”

HIS STANDING IN THE GAME
“But when I say I’m the best, I don’t say that outta my ass. I say that with all my stats behind me. I put that against anybody. I mean anybody. I really believe that… I believe in a lot of things.
I believe that ‘SportsCenter’ is the best thing on TV. I shouldn’t have to prove it. But I do have these stats to prove it. I’m talking about real run. I’m not talking about years off. I’m talking about straight—boom, boom, boom—back to back. We’re not talking about heritage acts either. We’re not talking about respect what I’ve done. I’m talking No. 1 [albums] 10 times. The Beatles is the only one [to have more
No. 1 albums]. They got 19, and if I get a surge of creativity, I could make nine albums next year.”

  1. For some reason, this cover feel like the channeling of the Source cover with Biggie on the front…

  2. No, but his lips are!

  3. Dope cover…Stop hating…Jay took over the game in 96′….G.O.A.T!

  4. SESSO….wait what?

  5. SESSO hater.

  6. on newsstands today?

  7. “is jay z bigger than hip hop” @ Zaire

  8. Jay always makes a dope cover for XXL

  9. Jay-Z shoulda had a Blue Magic remix with the Clipse on it.

    That woulda been heatrocks.

  10. they should haver switched up the logo tpo black, the black on white would look ill
    ‘all black everything’

  11. Meka <3 jay-z 2 bad its never gna work out

  12. “jay fell off” “jay is finished” “jay sucks now” haha, just look at the damn recent comments section and tell me who fell off!!

  13. Damn he looks like a camel.

  14. Do you fools listen to music or do you need to be attracted to him to do it?

  15. ^^^ @ George Clooney: lol exactly what i was thinkin….. But there were always people on that hoe shit, that’s why Bahamadia never blew up… She could spit, but that bitch was ugly as fuck.. Looked like a chunky whoopie goldberg..

  16. Yeah, I never knew it was going to be popular to judge how a guy looks when he’s making music. Probably some game fans. Eh, whatever.

  17. Game R.E.D. Album in stores this winter!!!

  18. Actually it’s a double edged sword on artists from up North… lil wayne could look like a burnt waterbug wit some skinnies on and the music still gets mad play… Shit doesn’t make much sense, they should make a boondocks episode about that…

  19. Rick Ross, Ne-Yo, Rihanna and Young Jeezy? I’d say Hov won at Def Jam. And he had a definate hand in Ne-Yo and Rihanna’s projects. Niggas can say whatever they want. That’s what record execs do.

  20. Jay-Z shoulda had a Blue Magic remix with the Clipse on it.

    That woulda been heatrocks.

    ________

Co-sign this! That would be bananas. They need to do a track together already.

  21. 30 million records sold…..Eminem did that in 3albums…..im just saying. and we all kno if he woulda dropped every time Jay did he woulda smashed him(lets b honest) and lyrically…(cmon) PLUS Jay been in the game way longer than Eminem(Em started late)
Please dont take this as hate i just dont like people who boast even tho alot of rappers do

  22. This cover is dope. Jay-Z is still the best rapper alive in my book.

In regards to that Blue Magic Remix, not hate on Malice, but it would have been dope to just have Pusha T on the remix.

  23. Jigga drops DOA but still rocks with the biggest abusers of AutoTune …. thats Weak shit.

Don’t get me wrong, I like some tracks where dem cats are using autotune… its hard not to, cuz its everywhere… however a hipocrite is a hipocrite.

UFCK THE BLUEPRINT 3, AND LETS HAVE REASONABLE DOUBT 2

  24. That black jesus piece goes hard

  25. Dont be an asshole dude Eminem is like the white hope of hiphop he and jay got two different styles jay spoke mob shit when Em spoke about Mop shit. yall wanna hear a nigga diss his mom and shits like that but jay respects his mother and does shit for the dope dealers when eminem does shit for the dope fienders. YOU GET ME

  26. I like how he’s sporting Ye chain. “Those accolades” aren’t much though. Roc Nation hasn’t sold any albums yet, almost all semi successful rappers having a clothing line, and fragrance (Diddy does them both best). The 30 million records? Kinda big, but a few of his peers (rappers who were hot in the 90s) have sold just as many, and a few more are on their way there too. The Nets suck and will continue to suck until he talks Lebron into his dynasty there. 40/40 was shut down here in Vegas and he did a good job wrapping B up. His true success is being relevant now, 20 years after he got started. Not just being relevant, but influential. How many people in general look up to this cat? I’m not even a fan and I give him his props.

  27. Jay aint never checked into no rehab center n if it wasnt for hov hiphops ship would have sunk right after biggie died cause aint another nigga kept new york on lock except Nas and them niggaz kept the status of hip hop real all 50 ever did was seperate the union in NY. When yall speak of Hov yall need to respect that mafuka like your pops cause this nigga contributed way more than you can expect to the genre and even the culture cause he first introduced yall to that fukin iceberg shit, the button ups and jeans with sneakers and caps, the jerseys and tims the fukin yankee caps, he made dressing professional look cool, look at the artists he has influenced Rick Ross, Aaron Da Jedi, J. Cole, Young Chris, Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Fabolous, Memphis Bleek, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Joel Ortiz, DRAKE, LIl Wayne. You dont see mafukas out there tryna dress like LLCOOL J n shit so shut the fuk up n give respect where granted This Nigga The Mike Jack of hiphop

  28. “What the hell have ya’ll done? to even have an opinion on what I been doin…what the hell have ya’ll won?”

  29. even athletes this nigga influences who are of the greats and not to mention successful business moguls like Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, Lyor Cohen, LA. Reid, Sean Combs, Denzil Washington, OPRAH WINFREY FUKIN OPRAH HOW MANY NIGGAZ U KNOW IN THE GAME OPRAH FUKS WITH, Funk Master flex, Jimmy Iovine i mean come on this nigga is the man of the century props to you hove you got mad love in the Virgin Islands and you need to sign the next big shit from the Virgin Islands Aaron Da Jedi this nigga is clever as fuk

  30. look at the Jigga stans!! im not taking away his accolades im just trying to play devil’s advocate..once u get a strong fan base behind u of course u are goin to go #1 everytime (hence thats why i said the eminem comment) all his albums wasnt spectacular but most was consistent and he had a cpl classics…but hes saying he’s the best by his stats, im sure hes lookin at lyrics as well and hes not the best lyricist right now(i hope yall agree) the game changes, people get better…

  31. @Goblin — when he says death of Autotune, he’s not referring to Kanye, T-Pain, etc. He’s referring to ringtone rappers. Do you think Jay would shit on Kanye and Diddy like that? Think about it.

  32.
