Def agree. The purpose is entertainment (profit) so why wouldn’t BO jump on the hottest thing especially with arguably the hottest in the game. Still too funny that Oprah will do a marathon w/Diddy, a visit to Bkly’n w/Jay but never had Ice Cube, Luda, or 50 Cent on her show. Side note: if there is anyone here that thinks Jay is doing a disservice to Black people with what may be “stereotypical” lyrics then just look at your local news channel tonight and see what NIGGAS really do.

Kantwon said this on August 25th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Ok, I can’t stand O’Reily. But, I must say that even though I love hip hop, it’s hard to listen to a lot of it when you’re a progressive Black man always in search of higher learning and wanting the stereotypes that Blacks get labeled with to go away.
There’s very few artist that I feel actually take Black forward. Majority of them take us two steps, shit even ten steps back. I think what O’Reily’s problem is that he wants to ask Black how can we complain about the issues that plague our culture, and still perpetuate the stereotypes that our music associates us with, but he has a racist/prejudice sentiment behind it.
His ignorance along with FOX Corps. Neo-Conservative views don’t allow him the tolerance and mental capacity to even get a proper lesson on hip hop culture. It would be nice for him to have a sit down with KRS-One, so he can get a lesson on the culture.

@BrooklynsOwn -Well said but understand that there really is no entertainment value in education of a culture or a people. It’s obviously more lucrative to exploit and stir up drama. It permeates almost every part of TV these days. I mean the Weather Channel has drama filled mini-series. I find myself like come on now, I just wanted to know if I need an umbrella not to get the shit scared out of me by lacing old storm footage with a music score probably best left in a Wes Craven horror flick.

Brandon said this on August 25th, 2009 at 11:51 am
@ Da Goods – You’re absolutely right my man, ignorance is truly bliss in this country. It’s like drug dealers complaining about the “man” being against the Black man. No negro, you were against school. Or people complaining about teenage pregnancies, but support artists and programming that sells nothing but sex. We have a truly ass backwards society.
BrooklynsOwn said this on August 25th, 2009 at 11:57 am
@ Da Goods – and to add, I think that entertainment can be found in anything educational, it just has to be done right. Chappelle Show is a prime example of that. It was funny as hell, and the ratings were astronomical (the highest selling DVD TV series all time). Remember during the golden era of hip hop, you could go to a party and hear Self Destruction or Fight the Power or Sound of the Police? All of those songs had deep messages, but it seems that we’ve become too cool for school, so that era got pushed to the back burner.
BrooklynsOwn said this on August 25th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
BLACK PEOPLE ARE SO FUCKIN DRAMATIC!!
When they do something to whites it’s nothing. Just like here in Philly when these dumb black kids killed an innocent guy that was waiting for the train. Then these kids were on rampages beating other people waiting for public transportation! Some reason it was never a black person they committed the crimes on. You don’t see no whites screaming racism,
But when a white kid beats black kids up it’s a major national fuckin thing.
I ain’t white. So keep your dumb comments as if I was a cra—-.
Understand yourself before you say something, because you peolpe are a bunch of contradicting as race.
Luis said this on August 25th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
@BrooklynsOwn -I actually agree with you. When I made the ‘education’ comment it was a response to BO sitting down with KRS-One to learn the culture.

@Luis -Not sure it’s about being dramatic as much as having love for something like Hip-hop and having people who don’t understand any of it purposely misrepresenting or exploiting it just to say ‘look how Jay-Z, one of their best, says the n-word in a line about race, how ironic’ (paraphrased of course). It’s not me as a Black man saying good for those white kids and calling Al Sharpton if they were Blacks that got hurt or killed. I ain’t with none of that! I love hip-hop not violence regardless of the skin color. I ain’t gay but who’s the weaker, them or the ones that bash ‘em?
Da Goods said this on August 25th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
@ Luis – The ignorant people of ANY race will do what you feel Blacks do. What you must understand is that Blacks are consistently disparaged in all aspects by ALL races. It’s like we’re the mockery of the earth. A large portion of it is our own fault, but not all. It’s hard to deal with Whites constantly putting us in situations to constantly put us down and treat us like second-class citizens. You can’t be the majority and run shit and then want to talk about people as if there are no repercussions. So we’re just supposed to sit back and take it (pause)??? Nah son. The truth of the matter is that Whites don’t like to be told about themselves. When Rev. Wright made the comments that he made, they were well-articulated arguments, but the problem is that nobody hates like family. Like the bible says “the truth brings offense, but it is not a sin”
@ Da Goods – You’re so right my dude, and I couldn’t agreee with you more. Americans love drama. It’s the driving force of our media and what mirrors what our culture looks like from the outside looking in.

Hip hop viewed through the media has fallen off year by year. Idiot and ignorant artist are marketed more then the more illectual and influenced. Nowdays if you have a good hook/single your being aired everywhere. If it was like the 90′s; Hip Hop in General was at it’s prime and progressed year by year following that path, all of this would be avoided.

I’m not saying rap is only for non-whites. I’m saying white people (no matter their upbringing or struggle) can’t FULLY relate to it on the same level that WE do. To deny that is ignorant.
Most white kids got into it cuz it was different and a not like their parent’s music. We got into it because it spoke OUR language, they looked like US, they dressed how WE dressed and acted how WE acted.
It’s hard for someone who isn’t black to really understand that. It wasn’t something that we had to learn. That shit was already ALL around us and in our souls. You get what I’m tryna say?
It’s like a woman and a man who give birth to a baby and then a few years later adopt a child. The adopted child, no matter how much love and affection he is shown, will never TRULY have the same connection with the parents that the first born has.
Just my 2 cents
LongLiveTheKING said this on August 25th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
hey longlivetheking- so you are grouping all black people into one category and all white people into another category and assuming there are definate differences between all black and white people regardless of upbringing, economic status, demographics, dna, everything? so you dont think there are white people out there who have had rough upbringings that relate to a certain music genre like rap on a higher level than some black people who have had it better than them? your drawing a line of difference that cant be separated is, in my opinion, exactly what leads to racism, oppresion, and misunderstandings in the world and make us all worse off. And for the record, I am white and did not have a rough upbringing in the scheme of things-so i am sure that some people can “FULLY” relate to rap “better” than me, but what the fuck does that even mean? its not like hip hop is the end all be all god of the universe. I just prefer it to shitty country music. and do you think that rap is for all black people? i guarantee you there are black people who prefer country music, and that i relate to rap better than they do.

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m prob not doing a good job of explaining it right. But that’s because it kinda goes beyond comprehension. Upbringing is irrelevant. I’m saying we share a connection as black people and we get each other’s struggle. No matter what it may be. Whether you’re Barack Obama or Jay-Z. Whether you grew up filthy rich or dirt poor. Whether you went to college or dropped out in the 10th grade. Whether you’re a lawyer or a drug dealer. As black people there’s a connection that we share that surpasses all of that. Cuz ultimately we STILL deal with the same issues on a larger scale.
I’m sure there’s some shit that you hearin rap music that you just don’t get. It’s not cuz you didn’t grow up the way said rapper did. It’s simply cuz you’re not black.
Doesn’t mean you can’t listen to rap or that you can’t relate to it. Just saying there’s something underneathe that you will always miss. The same way there’s something I’ll never be able to understand in white america or amongst Hispanics or Asians.
