here’s what I am saying (this will rehash some of what I have already stated)
#1 I am in no way hating on 2dopeboyz for posting this. not that that were in question, i just thought I should make that clear
#2 Like I said, sonically XV is dope. I’m not denying that, but like I said, the true talent behind XV is his producer/engineer Seven.
#3 When I listen to music, I listen for content. Of course the sound has to be appealing, but I don’t think I’m crazy for actually listening to and processing the words. A lot of what XV says makes no fucking sense. My best example of this is “Mirror’s Edge” I cant lie, its a dope song, but his lyrics are nothing special. I feel that instead of putting together intellectual thoughts, he just puts together words that sound good together and completely negates any true lyricism.
#4 The fact that in this song “In Due Time” he claims that he feels that he is deserving of a Grammy. Are you fucking serious??? They don’t give out Grammys for “Mixtape of the Year”. Saying something like that, to me, is utterly ridiculous and on another level disrespectful to those people who actually deserve and have won Grammys for the bodies of work they have produced.
Just some thoughts. Again, I’m not saying I dont listen to XV and I’m not claiming that dude is trash. I’m saying that dude c/should be alot better and that I do not feel that he will ever live up to the hype that surrounds him.

i can kinda agree with fam bout mirrors edge its cool and all but aint nun special…my opinion…but with dat said…XV is really one of the best young mcs out trust me i kno cuz ive listened 2 his square in a circle mixtape, 40 Days & Nights mixtape, and his please hold mixtape…he is dope foreal and his lyrics are impressive…and me personally i like him on alternative beats and ur so called traditional hip hop beats
XV is a beast lyrically and no Im not just sayin that. I do agree that what Ive heard from his album so far hasn’t been his best but there are a lot of rappers out there who I think are better on their mixtape game than their LPs. Check out his Uptown freestyle for instance or listen to his song Bruce Lee. Yea his beats are sick cus of his production but he def has the ability to go in he just doesn’t in the TWO songs you named.

XV held the Bruce Lee contest to in essence give shine to people that were “below” him bc supposedly noone did that for him. Well the tracklisting was released, no XV, and there was no communication initiated by XV to tell the 2 artists who won the contest that they did not make the cut. This is a completely different matter but it is a shame. To further this point, its ironic that, on a tape that will assuredly proclaim that everyone is on the level, there are no features from anyone “below” XV on the totem pole. Again, this has nothing to do with the music, just an observation.
Why can’t a mixtape be an example of an artist talent? Like I said there are many rappers who are much better on mixtapes and than actual albums. Also you talk about progression and not slipping off but a) none of us have heard the whole album and b) whoever you consider to be the G.O.A.T. he has bad songs too so 2 bad songs isn’t slipping. Can you also give an example of who you think is good lyrically and some of their lyrics just so I some idea of what you consider good.

XV is actually an acquaintance of mine from Kansas. I’m from the H, but I went to school and played ball up in Wichita. I met this dude through another producer, and he was much more into production then. He’s VERY much improved lyrically since, and I can assure you, his grind is like very few you’ve seen. I respect the hell out of his work ethic. Back then, I thought, “Eh… nothing special lyrically.” Now, I’m very impressed. Maybe not matching up with some of the other up and comers, but don’t sleep.

We are moving into an area similar to the late 80s and early 90s where anyone could rap and lots of new faces were emerging. The ones that lasted and the ones who had an impact on culture were the ones who made sense of their lyrics and still conveyed their messages in a sonically pleasing manner.
