Drake Signs With Young Money Records

Well, the wait is over: After weeks of speculation, Drake has chosen to go with the home team and sign with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Records, according to a source close to the situation. The deal breaks down as a joint venture between Young Money and Cash Money, with Universal Republic distributing. Drake’s management was adamant that he should be viewed as an independent artist, although Universal will distribute the project.

Well.. there you have it. Thoughts? And speaking of Drizzy, hit the jump for a couple shots from on set of his Best I Ever Had video, directed by Kanye West.

  1. did his stock drop after yesterday nd he got nervous? or is this really wht he wnted to do the whole time? i feel like if it ws he would hve done it sooner… relly wouldnt hve expected him to go young money with the kind of distnce he keeps…. CONGRATS though. nd if this means the album is coming sooner, even better. i will indeed, thank you later

  2. 1st bitches

  3. That’s crazy. How does he expect to still be considered “independent”?

  4. ya questionable long term move. now weezy gunna be in his ear like a qtip

  5. I’m mad they spelled Talib Kweli’s name wrong… Tali”D” Kweli…

Congrats Drake… I am responsible for putting my whole school on you… no lie lol!

  6. well i guess this was gonna happen after that fuckery last night

  7. Independent? My Ass lmao

  8. Another promising career ends

  9. That’z Nice And All, Big Up’z 2 Drizzy But……………………………… IT’Z ALL ABOUT KING MJ RIGHT NOW R.I.P YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST!!!!! FUCK THE 2009 BET AWARDS!

  10. but my bet is he goes platinum week one

  11. kinda resembles when 50 signed with em tho no??
both had big buzz both had a co-sign from the highest selling rapper of the time and both took forever to sign

  12. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Well that was Drake for me. I can only imagine the garbage commercial songs he’ll put out on this label.

  13. also lil wayne’s 15 mins are almost up that rebirth sounds meh so far

  14. Young Money? Terrible choice.. that crew is ass.

  15. wow…his album is never gonna come out as long as he on Waynes label..dumb move..

  16. now its time for him to outshine wayne on his own label lol.
not the choice i would’ve made but thats just me.

  17. wanye got no reaction when he preformed everygirl, and is it just me or does he sound different live? i think i’m buggin

  18. honestly? after so many great moves made, this one aint too bright

  19. he’ll be another lloyd banks have one hot album, then after wanye fame fade so will his but way faster

  20. should’ve signed with rocnation instead of with those young money failed abortions.

  21. damn young money trash man why did lil wayne win best male hip hop artist
    drake good knowin ya man

  22. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Drake should not have done this, everyone on that label so far has failed HOOOOOOOOORRIbly what is he thinking
They don’t market there artist correct one single lil wayne or another artist assisted single then release the album not a smart marketing plan He should have chose a label that has his best interest at heart is going to put him as a lead
Hopefully the buzz he has gained so far will propel him past wat the others have done he needs to release his album quickly too cuz i dont know if he’s saving all his good stuff for the album but the verses he released on invented sex and i can’t hide weren’t that great

  23. Yeah I agree, after many smart decisions this one seems questionable ….I also think Roc Nation would have been the better choice, u can’t go wrong with Jigga at the helm imo ..

  24. shaky move at best…

  25. Dissapointing!!!!!!!!!!

  26. his buzz is big but it aint that big. i ask a lot of my white friends if they like drake after they start singing lil wayne songs, nd they seldom do….. you cn go wrong with Jay at the helm. and Roc Nation is too stcked. i don’t know where he could hve went, but he should of went somewhere else. Wayne and him could be cool, without him still being Young Money.. unless baby suge knighted him?

  27. I don’t listen to dude but this here is a big ass mistake. He would be better off somewhere else.

  28. great now we can get more drake collabs with Gutta and birdman, which is what the game’s been missing

  29. lol @ wheelchar jimmy

  30. dumb ass nigga.

  31. bad move…

  32. Damn Shame. i’mma miss him

  33. Wonder was Curren$y has to say…

  34. drake is gonna be fine, hes got a buzz, a song on the radio, and a co-sign from damn near every hot artist out. the only thing he didn’t have was a distribution deal to put out an album in stores. he has a whole different situation than the other young money artist. whats the problem?

  35. Wayne Helped MAKE Drake, he is sticking with what is familiar and I don’t blame him. Fuck rocnation too he would definitely not fit in there anyway Jay-Z is over he needs to retire. Oh yea, D.O.A. is horrible!

  36. *long sigh*

  37. Well, here’s to endless Young Money features on his album. Not a fan of Drake but I do know a bad move when I see it. Rocnation would have been a better fit, especially with Jay co-signing him. However Rocnation is stacked but I doubt a lot of those guys will drop an album any time soon.

  38. n88888888 must be an autotune lover lol

  39. thnk baby and wanyne are gonna rape drake of all his money like they did with everyone else so farr his album will never come out but he could go plat but his music quality will suffer greatly and he will be garbage like lil wayne drake seems kinda like a sell out for that move wanye has already making drake music quality suffer i feel bad for the kid he think he found some friends when all he found was two gold diggers they dont care about anyone else everyone always leaves cuz weezy doing them wrong and it just ends up baby and wayne

  40. Good luck drizzy……….. be a legend in your own skin

  41. i think most of you are idiots. He’s been fucking with Young Money for a long time. So now he signed with em and shits gonna change? Weezy was on multiple tracks on So Far Gone, none of them being “commercial garbage”. I think he shoulda stayed Indy, but signing with Young Money is by no means a bad move…..

  42. Ehhh.. i’d rather him sign to YM knowing that he’ll have his albums pushed out. He’s created a name for himself already on a large scale so there’s no real need for Artist Development. + with YM he’s with HIS ppl and has more creative freedom.
Why would he sign to a major ANYWAYS??? niggas get put on the shelf like clockwork at majors

  43. drake done fucked up. i mean shit i dont like him that much anyways but hes not gonna do anything at YM, remember what happened to curren$y

  44. curren$y is my guy but he is no drake…spitta never had that kind of buzz in his career. but I agree that signing with YM is not a good look. but it doesn’t matter as long as kanye is still producing the shit.

  45. I wasn’t expecting this at all. I really thought homey would have signed with RocNation or something.

Especially after last night’s fiasco, I was hoping that he disassociated himself with the coonery that comes with Lil Wayne and the artists of Young Money.

It’s all good though. At least he has major distribution through Universal. I think his album will do incredibly well.

I hope he will outshine all those cats on Young Money and make them look dumb.

Maybe he knows this already and that’s the reason he did it. He can shine on Young Money cuz he’s the only one really spitting.

On RocNation, he would have had to deal with Jay-Z, J. Cole, Mickey and possibly Wale. LOL. All-star team!

On second though…yeah, he should signed with the ROC. IDK what happened here.

Possible EPIC FAIL. We’ll see how this pans out though.

  46. I wouldn’t condemn Drake to fail quite yet. We know what he’s capable of and he’s been associated with Wayne for a while. That didn’t stop him from making a good quality mixtape in So Far Gone. I think Wayne appreciates Drakes creativity and versatility for singing and rapping and will let him create the what he wants. It’s just now Drake has a distributor.

Just got to hope he doesn’t let all this fast paced fame get to his head. Like Jamie said on the BET Awards, “The pressures on.”

  47. whhaaaaaaaaaat!?!? wow didnt see this coming after he kept saying that he is not YOUNG MONEY affiliate…wow…oh well i agree with what Young Son (The Hip Hop Dreamer) said..he’ll outshine all those nigggas..i mean gutta!?! lol like cmon now. nigga drake torn his acl i haerd thats why he was sittin down at his performance.

  48. I like drake…but this move is sure to hurt him in the long run. Instead of being #1 on another label he’s always gonna be #2 under Lil Wayne…man that sounds like the EXACT same scenario that happened with that dude who’s doin that mixtape with Wiz Khalifa….damnnn i can’t remember his name tho….LOL.

  49. Pedophile Idiot.

  50. That video is looking like its going to be fly though.

    No lie.

  51. Pff, If he still drops mixtapes as dope as So Far Gone, hell, I don’t care if he’s signed with RocNation, Young Money Pedophiles, Leathal Interjection, or Nature Sounds.

    So Far Gone = Win.
Drake as a person = Not so Much.

  52. more like stool jimmy.

  53. Man, the song has been already played out, I don’t even want to watch it.
But I want to see how Kanye did, so I will.

  54. LOL @ anyone who thinks this is a good move. This man had to buzz to parlay his OWN distribution deal. Now he’s signed to Young Money/Cash Money/Universal? That’s 3 checks he’s gon have to cut before he even gets a dime! Plus his mangers also mange Wayne. That’s a conflict of interest right there. SMH…

I can tell a lot of yall know NOTHING about the game…or business for that matter.

  55. ringtone rapper to a ringtone label
    makes sense

  56. am i the only person who actually doesn’t give two fucks and half a shit

  57. Universal is already pushing (pimping) “best I ever had”.
I cant see him signing to anything else.

  58. Wayne is going to rape Drake for everything. He already has him writing for him all day and night. And the songs with Wayne on So Far Gone were probably the worse ones on the time. Without wayne on 4 tracks it would have been much better. He didn’t need him and now he is going to be dragged down.

  59. Yo. On the real?
The tracks with Wayne were dope.
Sucessful, Ignant Shit, Unstoppable, Uptown. Yeah. All Dope tracks.

But, I care because Dude is a dope rapper. And with YM, I think the quality will go down to Money, Cash, Hoes.

  60. it was looking like he was gonna sign with them for the longest anyway. they even have the same manager(as do kanye)

  61. IMO this is the best label he could have signed with. Why? Freedom! If he would have gone to Sony, Arista, Def Jam, etc.. he would have been marketed as a R&B artist. Now I think he’ll have the freedom to whatever sound HE wants to do. Plus its a good look for the label. Either way I just want some good music.

  62. its a disappointment but we alll saw it comin Drake music might not change ( hopefully seein as there is a great Wayne influence on So Far Gone compared to Comeback Season) if he stays true to himself and as long as Wayne & them push and market the album unlike eut theyve done wit tgere other artist he should b good.

  63. @ ilovedeadprez

If he went with Roc Nation he could be free. Same with Grand Hustle. This isn’t a good look cause Wayne is a fake dude and Drake will be following that making him look fake.

  64. I can’t see Drake being held back from getting a release so I don’t think it matters where he went. This situation isn’t comparable to 50 signing to Em.
    1. Wayne’s legacy isn’t the same. He’s about to take a major L for Rebirth.
    2. Drake’s situation is nothing like 50′s. He’s got the majors on his dick. 50 was blackballed.

  65. Yeah, Drake literally had the majors eating out of his hand, dying to sign him.

And Comeback Season was way better than So Far Gone, but So Far Gone was more experimenting so I won’t blame that totally on Wayne.

I just hope his debut is HIS debut album, and not filled with Wayne.

  66. Good Move, Stay with what help get great hits. Make a hit album than all these haters can go fuck themselves.

Keep making the right moves, do what got you there.

  67. “Talid Kweli” damnit mtv
dont forget, Sway dares a motha fucka to call him quasi

  68. remember what happened to curren$y?
    NO ALBUM RELEASED.

    drake fail.

  69. I suck dick and kiss men on the lips like Lil Wayne

  70. who is “talid kweli” hahahahahahha

  71. @ veraci0us

    LMFAO

  72. This was a “No Shit” move.Do you think Wayne was gonna let Drake sign somewhere else? Hell no. Drake has as much Buzz and Charizma as Weezy. He would be a fool to let him pass.

  73. on the plus side he’s definitely smashin nikki all day errday now lol

  74. thats at Bishop Ford High School in NY haha

  75. ^ or maybe he smashin’ Wayne & Nick.
Or Mack, Gudda, Wayne, Nick, & [...] HIMSELF?!

    Im sorry, lmao, I’m bored.

  76. FUCK
    toronto takes an L.

  77. [...] Original post:  Drake Signs With Young Money Records [...]

  78. Drake Fails.

  79. Yeah it is @ Isaiah

  80. Lol, Ignorant Shit, Successful, Unstoppable and Uptown. Uptown was the only song the Wayne’s verse didn’t seem like an after thought. Successful, waynes verse could have been cut by the placement in the song, wayne wanted it in there. unstoppable, drake wrote it and he did the same for ignorant shit. Drake doesn’t have his freedom anymore, he is chained to wayne. All those songs didn’t take away but they didn’t add anything and honest successful would be a hit with or without wayne. He is not bringing anything to the table, the songs without wayne were better anyday. With the exception of uptown. Period.

  81. as long as young money doesn’t jump all over his joints drake should stay fine. Wanye won’t make him write about money cars hoes, he’ll be there to do promos

  82. Smartest thing he could have done

  83. I might be the one in the world who thinks nikki manaj is just a video ho who raps… Did the whole world forget about lil wayne and YM albums and I never been YM concert but if there are anything like that shit at the 09Bet awards I’m glad I never gone…

  84. lol he shouldve gone with C.A.K.E. recordings dat wouldve be sweet dey put out da Bake Sale fo da cool kids

  85. How does Drake fail?
I don’t think it matters what label he signs to.
Bet Drake makes most of his dough writing/ ghost writing anyways (yeah, I said it!)

  86. the nigga shoulda just signed to NO LIMIT. make em say uuuuuuhhhhhh nigga. but yeah drake good luck with the album, I know that nigga currenSy is broker than fuck these days cuz of his signing to cash money. so do what you gotta do, just dont kiss that nigga BIRD SHIT in the lips, its bad enough you already look suspect with those little dance twirls you do during you performances. haha

  87. All this running around and hassle for you to sign with the people you were cool with all along.

Damn Drake I thought you were smarter than that. You’re on a label that have several unreleased artists who are anxious for their debut and Birdman and Lil’ Wayne who try to come out with their own albums as much as possible.

You’re gonna be fighting for promotion time and release dates every year now. DAMN!

You should have signed with “Roc Nation” where Hov has yet to start that empire and it’s a huge multi-million dollar deal or even Def Jam even though they have a packed roster of people at least they release the majority of their artists.

I really pray and hope this doesn’t effect the music and quality that we heard from you from “Room For Improvement” all the way to now!

  88. Truth

    ^^^^^
AREN’T YOU THE SAME DUDE (UNLESS YOU JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE THE SAME NAME AS THE DUDE I’M TALKING ABOUT) WHO TRIED TO PUT YOUR SELF ON THE DRAKE & LIL’ WAYNE (EVENTUALLY YOUNG JEEZY AS WELL) SONG “I’M GOING IN” FUCKERY YOU PULLED OFF????

THEN ACTED LIKE IT WAS YOUR SONG OR LIKE YOU WERE FEATURED ON THE OFFICIAL SONG?? YOU HAD DJ CAPCOM ON IT TOO THEN TRIED TO RELEASE THE “UNTAGGED VERSION”

  89. HAHAH CUZ THAT WAS REAL LAME!!!!

  90. i was hoping he went independent with major distribution. I mean, this man has mixtape tracks on the internet. No album at all, no released songs except “every girl”……and it’s on the radio.

  91. does anyone not see that he couldve signed to Young Money because A. he KNOWS he is the BEST thing they have and the ONLY “thing” they have so they will focus on him alone/alot or B. the $ was RIGHT! or C. like the press said he wanted to remain INDEPENDANT even with all the MAJOR buzz he has gained if done right i think this can be a GREAT move for her money/control wise. I understand the controversy with him being there (like Pastor Mason on G-Unit) but the Drake i know is no fool so i believe hes handling business and the choice made was for a reason (although i thought hands down he’d go with ROCNATION lol)

  92. haha their playing Degrasi on MTV right now, Wheelchair Jimmy, tha crippled virgin

  93. drake u did da right thing i would of did it to because young money is the shit

  94. [...] the news broke on Monday, Drake spoke with MTV about signing with Young Money Records. …it’s almost impossible to go [...]

  98. dude talented but damn / this aint exactly Jordan signing with the Bulls it’s more like Kucoc coming in later and adding to the swag * if he makes it big it’s because Wanye is real

  99. Fuck no young money was the best choice who do you think put drake out there with all the people he didn’t know but now knows. Drake is one of the best rappers don’t get me wrong no one here today would say he isn’t in the catagory of being in the top with wayne that’s why wayne stayed with him like he did. But the way Wayne and Drake change there style up of music they won’t fade half of the songs out have wayne in them and they are the top played songs. I think it was best to go to young money hands down get money Drake.

  100. Ne1 who is on here talkin hate riff raff is just a hater, everyone needs haters tho..:o
