Toki Wright Talks Race Relations in Hip Hop (Video)

Let’s keep it RSE for a second shall we? Earlier today, I posted the Brother Ali assisted joint off his new album (A Different Mirror) earlier today and now it’s interview time. Toki sits down with the legendary hip hop journalist that is Davey D to speak about his involvment in the first fully credited diploma program that studies hip hop, race relations within hip hop and more. And for those wondering, the track playing in the beginning is called Devil’s Advocate. If you like what you hear and want more, you can cop the album at FifthElement, Amazon or iTunes.

  1. I am at work so I can’t watch the video but that diploma program sounds great. Other types of music (to be fair have been around longer) have all kinds of music degree programs that are essential to make music a lifelong profession. Hip Hop is near/has reached that point where it could be considered a genre here to stay. No other alternative musical movement (ie Punk music) has had the widespread reach that Hip Hop has. With Hip Hop being an all encompassing culture, it is heartening to see degrees made focusing on the subject.

  2. I wish they had a program somewhere here in Philly, specifically at Temple.

  3. Big shout out to Davey-D a real diplomat in the hiphop community
