O I forgot lastly. Artists don't get .99 for album sold.
Now that can be the scenario for some artist and has happen.

Basically what I'm trying to say the music industry is an open field for contract negotiation but not normally flexible to unsigned artists with no album and/or any mainstream released projects.

Depending on the buzz of the artist (newcomer) or stature of the artists (normally been around the block w/ a different label) or the artists may have both, the contract offers differ.
Industry standard they give you a number of album deals. The outcome of the 1st one will depend on how much the contract will play out for all the albums you signed to released under them.

Then your budget (loan) to create the product/promo comes in to play which is $250K max for unproven artists. Proven artists get that budget of $250k or more, some at times can get less than $250k Keep in mind the budget money is all money you're gonna owe the label. So when artist say they say that signed a deal for $1.5M they also should say how much of the $1.5 is for the budget and how much of it is earned money (normally the bonus $ that's theirs under the contract agreement).

They divide all the other ways of getting money. Like the $ to every album sold. Some artist like Jim Jones claimed to get $8 to every album sold. Some other artists claimed to get more per album sold. Nowadays there are more artist who get the same or a bit more but it's very rare. Some people are lucky if they get $3 to every album sold.

The negotiate how much percentage of your publishing you get, the money from touring (main way to get their $) after the album drops and lastly more recently they try to negotiate a % from ya ringtones since before it blew up like it did say 5 yrs ago record labels didn't have that in the contract for the artists. Some of these artists pocketed and recouped the budget $ (loan) they owe the label and some added to the album sales and tour money. ---I could be missing some things but I believe most of this stuff is on point.

If anyone is cable of doing 1M or more independent now-a-days it's got to be Drake.

I mean I'm on the eastcoast and his shit is bumped heavy out here and numerous friends and place down south play his shit. I haven't gotten any feedback from the west but I'm sure they do too ie. 2DopeBoyz.com

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. He would make so much money per CD versus on the label...and if he links up with that tour with Jay and them, and just simply gets a sponsor, he's straight with it. He's already doing this "SO FAR GONE" tour with no label backing.

I say he should do it. I bet he at least goes gold in a week. I mean, real talk, earlier last week, someone was selling a fake, bootleg Drake album called "The Girls Love Drake" on iTunes with all the free music that he had dropped and some lame cover art. In no time, Best I Ever Had was like #4 on the iTunes charts and people were buying it and saying like "YES! Drake's finally on iTunes, not even paying attention to the fact it was a fake album.

The only argument might be how he could lock in the overseas crowd. IDK how well he has a following in other parts of the world, but in Canada and America, he's one of the number 1 artists' to watch right now.
