Naledge – U Oughta Know

RubyHornet sent over a new/old song from Naledge. And the quote below will explain what new/old represents:

There really is no story to the song… I mean it’s old…It’s definitely from the Rawkus days. We just knew we couldn’t clear the sample, so it never was really considered a real option…At the time it was recorded, the sample thing and speeding up vocals to sound like chipmunks was pretty innovative….lol…This cat BIRD! who was an intern at Sony gave the beat to John Monopoly while we were in a meeting in NYC…He in turn gave it to me….I always liked the song so I figured why not let people hear it…This was going to be on Chicago Picasso, but the same problem came up with regards to the sample. This was also one of RTC’s favorites from the Picasso project.

  1. this shit is so official..the sampling is retarded

  2. Shit sounds like some Charles Hamilton.

  3. this sample is old I heard in it 2000 on a kay slay diplomats mixtape Juelz spit on this track, BUT regardless Naledge did it real justice too bad he couldnt clear it for his LP, fuck whoever owns the publishing to the billy joel track smh lol

  4. Speaking of sampling…

    I was thinking about something.

You know how Danger Mouse did his album with the whole CD-R thing?

I wonder if artists could actually start doing that to bypass getting sample clearances?

They could sell retail albums, packaged with the booklet and everything, and stuff like a regular CD. You’d buy it. It would be completely designed and all of that like regular. The only thing is…the CD would just be blank. Then the CD could be released free on the artists’ website and the person could download it and burn it to their CD themselves.

What do y’all think of that idea? You ever see that catching on? If it would work, I think it would be a great day for hip hop.

(But then again, I guess not great for the people who you sample from…hmmm)

  5. a buncha of people would just download the songs and not buy the CD.

  6. They could include a different URL unique to each purchase or some kind of code that you could only find inside the CD to access the site to download.

  7. the people that would buy the CDs are the true fans. plus the artists would run the risk of pissing their labels off.
