Gasface.net sits down with Bobbito to discuss his years at Def Jam. Some key questions answered…
Hip Hop, VideoWhy Russell Simmons never listened to Nas’ demo?
How Bobbito became a Def Jam A&R?
What’s Bobbito’s most disappointing episode @ Def Jam?

russ passed on ak, monch, and by default nas. smmfh. this is why niggas don’t f#$% with major labels. sad.
So he thought he’d pass on Nas so he didn’t show him?
Well, can’t blame him, I guess.
For Those That Don’t Know About Organized Konfusion… http://brutoleeonis.blogspot.com/2009/03/organized-konfusion.html
Russell Simmons would be so hard to work for. Props to Bobbito
lol this dude was the announcer for nba street rite
“this dude” was a lot more than that man…look into him…
lol he was that dude on nba street
smh @ uzi
Russell had a chance to sign Nas later, when Serch brought him through, but he thought he sounded too much like Kool G Rap. And since G Rap wasn’t exactly known for doing big numbers, he passed on him.
lol ease up i know he wasnt just the dude on nba street..i was just wonderin cuz that was a dope/memorable game cuz of him

“Since G Rap wasn’t exactly known for doing big numbers, he passed on him.”
It makes sense for Simmons to pass on Nas. Fiscally, Illmatic didn’t surpass 60k in first week sales. According to the industry at the time, that’s a bust. Def Jam was doing far better numbers at the time with any of their ’94 releases, and Nas looked like only a shadow of the hip-hop greats at the time.
You’ve got to realize that the album didn’t go platinum until 2001. Put your place in his shoes, it’s not a financially sound investment.
As far as Bobbito is concerned, I now comprehend fully why you’re such a respected legend. For me personally, thank you for breaking alot of my favorite artists to date.
