hey Meka (or shake), did you guys manage to write a review on Asher Roth’s album? I know you guys did a lot of hyping with stuff like “I’m tellin you, the album is hot, 4/20 campaign” but I wonder if you guys wrote an objective review with evidence that it’s hot. I mean, I cannot disagree with the plethora of reviews out there saying this album isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The pitchfork and the hiphopdx reviews are on point, for example.

Freedom of speech is a legal concept and although it might save you from being imprisoned or punished (at times), it doesn’t save you from coming off as intolerant and offensive in the public’s eye. Even though I think people overreacted and he was just joking and I’ve made more offensive jokes in the past, I know better than to make those jokes public, though because I know people out there don’t share the same sense of humor. Asher Roth as a rapper is not big enough to NOT bite his tongue…hence why the “tweets” were deleted.

First off, I don’t see why people got mad at Imus. Those girls(most of them) did have nappy hair, AND i bet a few of them weren’t the most lady-like. I do understand what white privilege is, and institutionalized racism, but that doesn’t mean Asher, or white people in general, can’t rap. However, from your comments, it seems that you feel racism only applies to white against black. That right there shows your immense ignorance. I swear on my life my best friend has partied with Asher Roth at a party in phildelphia, he met him through a friend at VT and he heard him freestyle. He was he heard was with a bunch of white dudes and he was rhyming dropping nigger non stop and even laughing about it at one point. Because of that it really ruined it for me, I think he is talentless but really well marketed with good beats and good features. Strip him down and put him in a cypher with a beat box and hes really a nobody, there is underprivledged artists out there who can play instruments, dj, graffiti, breakdance, freestyle, write songs, write poetry, sing, rap in other languages and because of imbalance and a&r slavery antics, a priveledged kid who barely had to work and used the internet as a marketing tool is going from making fun of “niggers” at parties to taking the income from other black artists, I cant respect it.

You could argue that Asher is privileged and is a bad rapper that only made it cause he’s white/gimmicky/whatever. He’s not the best freestylist in the world but look how many AWFUL rappers make it to #1 just cause they’re black and fit the stereotype of what a famous rapper should be (Soulja Boy, MIMS, Nelly, etc.). So if you’re gonna hate on Asher for making it let it be because you don’t think he’s any good, not cause of his skin color, and blame fans of BAD hip hop (black or white) who make this shit popular.

Hey man that was a great point, but that is hypocritical. Here is where your confused, you think its about whos number 1 and whos making money, real lyricism and talent ON TV AND RADIO (commercialy) died in the late 90′s. Regardless of who’s black or white or in number 1 shouldnt matter, it should be is he talented or not. And unfortunately if I strip his “expensive” production, fancy features, financial support, and a&r marketing I find nothing. It amazes me how I met emcees who never even broke a single, and made amazing music that would blow stuff like this out the water, why no marketing for real hip hop anymore. It is very hard for a real talented emcee to get the exposure Souljah Boy’s and the Asher Roth’s get. The reason why is these are A&R infants, you hand them a false identity to take, they become a character. Next they dumb down your lyrics and tell you how they want to market. You know what man I cant even talk about it. If you think this dude is nice, I suggest starting to listen to more hip hop from the early to mid 90′s or try checking some posts that are a little different or new to you on this site. You dont have to only click the Eminem, Asher Roth, & Lil Wayne posts click on something random give it a chance. Shake posts alot of dope undergrand give it a chance, you will never look back and realize how big of a joke a character like this guy is.
