New video from the jail-free half of Mobb Deep. Side note: I was having a convo with someone yesterday (who I can’t remember, but if you read this feel free to speak up) about Prodigy’s fall from grace post-”Takeover.” I proposed the idea that perhaps Prodigy was already a sub-par rapper even before that song dropped, it’s just that nobody really noticed. Thoughts? Anyone? Bueller?

prodigy was arguably the best mc out during the Hell On Earth days. this fact is too often overlooked. duke was so ill and visceral back then with his rhymes and his flow was sick, but after that lp it was a steady decline for p. it started on murda muzik and continued on h.n.i.c. and finally became glaringly obvious on infamy especially after jay murked him. i think it had more to do with his sickle-cell anemia acting up more often in those years than his skill simply diminishing but still it happened. so to answer your question, yes he had pretty much fallen off before “the takeover” but at one point in his career, pretty much nobody was fucking with him.

I propose that you’re trippin’ sir. I see a H.N.I.C. refresher course in your future.

Fry? Voodoo Economics….I agree with Dred. Back in the hell on earth days dude was a competitor. HNIC was still a sick album but ever since that and Murda Muzik homie fell off the face of the planet. I can’t blame sickel cell…i would have to blame copius amounts of drugs that str8 fried his brains. Now havoc is a better rhyme spitter than P. Its too bad…old school Mobb was that body in the trunk type shit too

ditto. there is no way you can call the guy “sub-par” with H.N.I.C on the market. Dude was nice on Murda Musik, The Infamous, Hell on Earth to. He started his downfall when he tried to rap (and sing) like 50 Cent. still had good beats tho.smh

i like it. I like it because the chorus sounds like “survival of the fittest”, which makes it nostalgic.
Prodigy is still dope. “Young Vets” is great. People just got bored with his antics. He’s one of the best ever.
They for sure lost when they signed with G Unit. I can’t believe how shitty that album was. Wow.

From The Infamus To Hell on Earth even Murda Muzik Prodigy had some of the most sickest Hip Hop lyrics and quotables Ive ever herd.So many HipHop songs have sampled his voice way to many to count. He is still good know but no where near as crazy as he used to be. Peace

The thing about P is that HE DID WHAT HE DID well. In terms of spittin’ that grimy visceral rap, his voice, his delivery, over those vintage mobb deep beats, was virtually flawless. The flaws themselves ADDED to the projects and gave them even more of a grimy feel. He was the shit when it came to that feeling. But, when Jay dissed him, he was bound to lose because the game was changing from grimy to fly. Now everybody is sick of it because cats took it so far that they too fly to even rap anymore, but back then, it was the shit, and Jay was already ahead of the curve because he was the flyest. Not only that, but Biggie and Tupac’s deaths left everyone looking for the kind of rappers THEY were: the versatile kind. Jay filled that void perfectly. He made songs for the streets, the bitches, and the club. Prodigy is the rapper that does the one thing he does really well, the gutter shit. If you evaluate him on a comprehensive scale, he would be somewhat below average now, and slightly above average from around infamous all the way until the first hnic. When you combine that with all the other stuff – that he is a very, very little dude physically that talks mad tough, the summer jam pics, and the incidents with Keith Murray, Saigon, etc. it all adds up to an IMAGE FAIL. A big part of the shift from grimy to fly is how much more the fans began to really examine the artists and trying to figure out if they were who they said they were. Prodigy did not pass that test. Which is why his “fall from grace” was bound to happen. It’s just a sign of the times. Lil’ Wayne seems immune to all that, however. SMH.
